Green Hotels
Collaboration with the community and
local organizations
 Human Resource Development
Introduction
Green Hotel. A lodging establishment that has made a commitment to various ecologically sound
practices such as saving water, saving energy, and reducing solid waste.
Being green goes directly to your bottom line. Being green goes directly to a higher long-term
value of your property. Being green goes directly to your front doors which open wide to bring guests back
again and again. Being green goes directly to keeping staff long-term because management clearly cares
for their health and well-being. Being green means guests, staff and management are healthier. There's
just no doubt that when odors, fumes, soot, droplets and residues of toxic, poisonous chemicals are not in
the air, on our food or on anything we touch, we are not absorbing or breathing them.

Collaboration with the community and local organizations
1.3.1 Existence of plans/activities to help improve quality of life of the community.
1.3.2 Existence of awareness raising programs for local community on environmental protection.
1.3.3 Creation of activities in promoting culture and traditional performance and local ways of life.
If you run an accommodation business, whether it be a hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, lodge, resort or
other type of guest facilities, making your business more sustainable is a good business choice.
Programs such as The Natural Step organization has already demonstrated how instituting sustainable
practices improve business outcomes and help to protect the local environment.
Many customers are attracted to eco-friendly hotel practices and many of the practices can save your
business money and make it more efficient, a win-win outcome. starter suggestions for greening your
accommodation business.
Recycle your old beds and mattresses. It will cut your costs down, create a competitive advantage,
interest your guests, and save environment. It takes over 20 years for a mattress to decompose! Make
sure that the company that recycles beds and mattresses actually does it and is not just sending parts of
it to landfill.
Start a linen reuse program in all guest rooms. This is now commonplace in many hotels and is a
cost-saving, water-saving and time-saving measure that works well. Many customers avail themselves of
the opportunity to hang up their towel instead of tossing it in the bath immediately for changing. Place
signs in your guest rooms indicating that this program is operational; either make your own or have them
printed locally. There are also online sites that will sell ready-made signs.
Save water. There are several ways to reduce water usage in each guest room. Some include:
o
Installing low-flow shower heads and sink aerators.
o
Switching to low-flow toilets or install toilet-tank fill diverters. To learn more about low-flow toilets,
see Convert Any Toilet to a Low Flush Toilet.
Save energy. Reducing energy usage reduces your fuel bills, so it makes common sense. Here are some
ways you can achieve this:
o
Switch to LED (Light Emitting Diode)lighting to reduce electricity use. LED's have the lowest
carbon footprint, last 5-20 times longer, and are safe (compact fluorescent light bulbs all contain mercury,
a hazardous heavy metal) in guestrooms, lobbies, and hallways. Use sensors and/or timers for areas that
are infrequently used.
o
Educate your staff to turn off lights and turn down heating/air conditioning when rooms are
unoccupied. Also, during summer months, to close the drapes.
o
Use daylight exclusively in your lobby, bar, and restaurant for as much of the day as possible.
Consider installing skylights if needed.
o
Install window film to lower heating and cooling loads and reduce glare in guestrooms.
o
Replace exit signs with Light Emitting Diode (LED) exit signs.
o
Purchase "Energy Star" appliances wherever possible. In the USA, see the Energy Star for
Hospitality site. It provides detailed information about energy saving appliances and monitoring systems.
o
Replace old washing machines with both water and energy conserving models.
o
If the hotel has a pool and/or hot tub, install a solar water heating system and use pool and hot
tub covers when the pool area is closed.
o
Use an energy management system (EMS) to tie in air handling units, HVAC, and lighting to
prevent conditioning space when it is not necessary. Replace electric package terminal air conditioner
(PTAC) units with more efficient heat pumps or other geothermal technologies. Consult outside sources to
evaluate the total system when replacing major mechanical equipment (such as chiller, water tower, etc).
Often, this can lead to downsizing and other opportunities to reduce both the initial investment and
operating costs.
o
Use proper insulation and reflective roof coverings.
Recycle. Recycle your hotel's waste in the kitchen, guest rooms, dining room etc. There are several ways
in which you can encourage guests and staff to recycle:
o
Provide guestroom recycling baskets for newspaper, white paper, glass, aluminum, cardboard,
and plastic.
o
Provide recycling bins both in public areas (i.e., poolside), in the kitchen, and in the back office
(including one at each desk) to make recycling as easy as possible.
o
Buy office and guest amenity products that contain recycled material. For company listings in
North America, access the Recycled-Content Product Directory and/or the Recycled Plastics Product
Directory.
o
Use recycled paper products (with high post-consumer recycled content) that are either
unbleached or bleached using a chlorine-free process. Minimize the amount of paper used for each guest
(i.e., reduce paper size of invoices, etc.). Print with soy-based inks.
Buy organic, fair trade, cruelty-free guest amenity products whenever possible. Make it clear that
you are supporting such products and try to obtain these products across a diverse range of products,
such as:
o
o
o

bedding and guest robes
hair and body care
coffee, tea and chocolate, etc.

Clean green. Use nontoxic or least-toxic cleaners, sanitizers, paints, pesticides, etc. throughout the hotel.
Make sure all chemicals are stored safely in a well-ventilated area.
Get the guests motivated to use green transportation options. Provide your guests with bicycles,
walking maps, and information on public transportation.
Avoid disposable products or throwing away useful items. Disposable products fill up landfills and
create garbage on your property. There are suitable alternatives:
o
Provide reusable items such as cloth napkins, glass cups, ceramic dishes, etc. with all food and
beverage services.
o
Provide glass cups and ceramic mugs (instead of plastic) for in-room beverages. Place cups and
mugs upside down on paper doilies (instead of covering opening with a plastic wrapping).
o
Donate leftover food to a local nonprofit organization and/or use a compost bin.
o
Donate leftover guest amenities, old furniture and appliances to charities.
Try green dining. If your hotel has a restaurant, consider transitioning it into a Certified Green
Restaurant. Buy organic, locally-grown food and/or plant an organic garden to provide fresh produce for
your guests.
Provide discounts to eco-oriented groups. Offer discounted rates to sustainable living/environmental
organizations who would like stay at and/or hold meetings at your hotel.
The development of Green hotel
1 promote again consumption
Not only should consider hotel products impact on the environment, consider product manufacturing
and sales process of environmental impact. Hotel must consider each product "ecological", the product
life cycle of environmental risk. Through promoting consumption of resources, make again, improve
environmental benefits of recycling.
2 to guide the customer's needs and wants
Due to the large consumer brings a waste of resources and reduce the environment, so the ability to
absorb wastes, scholars have proposed that we should reduce consumption, but this and consumers will
against. Therefore, the process of change is needed, the intention of consumer of consumer demand to
ecological harm the smallest products. Consumer of the environmental problems of sensitive must not
into buying behavior, the hotel's responsibility is to communicate through various means of life, the
environmental quality of consumers' desire to change into the actual potential to improve the quality of
promoting environmental action.

Human resource Development
Human Resource Development. Human Resource Development (HRD) is the framework for helping
employees develop their personal and organizational skills, knowledge, and abilities. Human Resource
Development includes such opportunities as employee training, employee career development,
performance management and development, coaching, mentoring, succession planning, key employee
identification, tuition assistance, and organization development.
HRD can give you the tools you need to manage and operate your organizations. Everything -production, management, marketing, sales, research & development, you-name-it -- everything may be
more productive IF your people are sufficiently motivated, trained, informed, managed, utilized and
empowered.
1.4.1 Provision of training programs for operation and development management staff on
environmental management.

The trend toward eco-conscious travel has brought with it a growing number of green hotel
certification programs in the hospitality industry. But the sheer volume of different programs and options
has led to uncertainty among travelers, meeting planners – and even the hotel operators themselves.
An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a comprehensive organizational approach
designed to incorporate environmental protection into the operation of any organization. The hotel can
improve efficiency and reduce operating costs by setting specific and realistic performance targets and
objectives that the entire organization can work towards. More often than not, the economic benefits are
more than enough to initiate an EMS in any organization.
Although many hotel operations today have incorporated environmental activities into their
operations, the vast majority do not have an effective system in place to define goals, measure sucesses,
and coordinate the range of activities. An EMS defines the process and direction while providing guidance
to all aspects of hotel management and may combine multiple environmental programs already being
executed. It is important to understand that numerous efficiencies and improvements are realized through
changes to operating procedures.
Objectives
The objectives of my report is to share knowledge about green hotels in terms in Collaboration
with the community and local organizations and Human resource Development. My professor give this to
me to analyze it. My main objective is to disscuss my topic properly to my classmate to understand what
my topic is and to inform about the progress of the green hotels. To inform others what you did against
what you planned. to communicate to my classmates and to my professors. And to have my grades in
Environmental Science.

Significance of the Report
Another way through which eco hotels use to conserve the environment is through the use of
what nature has to offer to help them manage various services necessary for the proper management of
the hotel. This would include the overuse of machines that omit a lot of carbon and other pollutants into
the environment while in use. They even put up Environmental training programs that help raise
awareness as well as workshops that teach others on how to best converse their environment.
The need to preserve the environment is something that various governments including the
United states has ensured certain standards and regulations are put into place for factories are as well
other companies to ensure they maintain and completely reduce the amount of pollution they release into
the environment. In case a company does not follow the set rules and regulations, their operational
license can be taken away.
In case you are traveling either on business or taking a vacation and are looking for an eco hotel,
you can simply log into the internet and search for hotels that are eco friendly and have a NABERS rating.
Such websites even rate the hotel in terms of the measures put in place to ensure the environment is
preserved and taken care of.

Green Hotels

  • 1.  Green Hotels Collaboration with the community and local organizations  Human Resource Development
  • 2. Introduction Green Hotel. A lodging establishment that has made a commitment to various ecologically sound practices such as saving water, saving energy, and reducing solid waste. Being green goes directly to your bottom line. Being green goes directly to a higher long-term value of your property. Being green goes directly to your front doors which open wide to bring guests back again and again. Being green goes directly to keeping staff long-term because management clearly cares for their health and well-being. Being green means guests, staff and management are healthier. There's just no doubt that when odors, fumes, soot, droplets and residues of toxic, poisonous chemicals are not in the air, on our food or on anything we touch, we are not absorbing or breathing them. Collaboration with the community and local organizations 1.3.1 Existence of plans/activities to help improve quality of life of the community. 1.3.2 Existence of awareness raising programs for local community on environmental protection. 1.3.3 Creation of activities in promoting culture and traditional performance and local ways of life. If you run an accommodation business, whether it be a hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, lodge, resort or other type of guest facilities, making your business more sustainable is a good business choice. Programs such as The Natural Step organization has already demonstrated how instituting sustainable practices improve business outcomes and help to protect the local environment. Many customers are attracted to eco-friendly hotel practices and many of the practices can save your business money and make it more efficient, a win-win outcome. starter suggestions for greening your accommodation business. Recycle your old beds and mattresses. It will cut your costs down, create a competitive advantage, interest your guests, and save environment. It takes over 20 years for a mattress to decompose! Make sure that the company that recycles beds and mattresses actually does it and is not just sending parts of it to landfill. Start a linen reuse program in all guest rooms. This is now commonplace in many hotels and is a cost-saving, water-saving and time-saving measure that works well. Many customers avail themselves of the opportunity to hang up their towel instead of tossing it in the bath immediately for changing. Place signs in your guest rooms indicating that this program is operational; either make your own or have them printed locally. There are also online sites that will sell ready-made signs. Save water. There are several ways to reduce water usage in each guest room. Some include: o Installing low-flow shower heads and sink aerators. o Switching to low-flow toilets or install toilet-tank fill diverters. To learn more about low-flow toilets, see Convert Any Toilet to a Low Flush Toilet. Save energy. Reducing energy usage reduces your fuel bills, so it makes common sense. Here are some
  • 3. ways you can achieve this: o Switch to LED (Light Emitting Diode)lighting to reduce electricity use. LED's have the lowest carbon footprint, last 5-20 times longer, and are safe (compact fluorescent light bulbs all contain mercury, a hazardous heavy metal) in guestrooms, lobbies, and hallways. Use sensors and/or timers for areas that are infrequently used. o Educate your staff to turn off lights and turn down heating/air conditioning when rooms are unoccupied. Also, during summer months, to close the drapes. o Use daylight exclusively in your lobby, bar, and restaurant for as much of the day as possible. Consider installing skylights if needed. o Install window film to lower heating and cooling loads and reduce glare in guestrooms. o Replace exit signs with Light Emitting Diode (LED) exit signs. o Purchase "Energy Star" appliances wherever possible. In the USA, see the Energy Star for Hospitality site. It provides detailed information about energy saving appliances and monitoring systems. o Replace old washing machines with both water and energy conserving models. o If the hotel has a pool and/or hot tub, install a solar water heating system and use pool and hot tub covers when the pool area is closed. o Use an energy management system (EMS) to tie in air handling units, HVAC, and lighting to prevent conditioning space when it is not necessary. Replace electric package terminal air conditioner (PTAC) units with more efficient heat pumps or other geothermal technologies. Consult outside sources to evaluate the total system when replacing major mechanical equipment (such as chiller, water tower, etc). Often, this can lead to downsizing and other opportunities to reduce both the initial investment and operating costs. o Use proper insulation and reflective roof coverings. Recycle. Recycle your hotel's waste in the kitchen, guest rooms, dining room etc. There are several ways in which you can encourage guests and staff to recycle: o Provide guestroom recycling baskets for newspaper, white paper, glass, aluminum, cardboard, and plastic. o Provide recycling bins both in public areas (i.e., poolside), in the kitchen, and in the back office (including one at each desk) to make recycling as easy as possible. o Buy office and guest amenity products that contain recycled material. For company listings in North America, access the Recycled-Content Product Directory and/or the Recycled Plastics Product Directory. o Use recycled paper products (with high post-consumer recycled content) that are either unbleached or bleached using a chlorine-free process. Minimize the amount of paper used for each guest (i.e., reduce paper size of invoices, etc.). Print with soy-based inks. Buy organic, fair trade, cruelty-free guest amenity products whenever possible. Make it clear that you are supporting such products and try to obtain these products across a diverse range of products, such as: o o o bedding and guest robes hair and body care coffee, tea and chocolate, etc. Clean green. Use nontoxic or least-toxic cleaners, sanitizers, paints, pesticides, etc. throughout the hotel. Make sure all chemicals are stored safely in a well-ventilated area. Get the guests motivated to use green transportation options. Provide your guests with bicycles, walking maps, and information on public transportation. Avoid disposable products or throwing away useful items. Disposable products fill up landfills and create garbage on your property. There are suitable alternatives: o Provide reusable items such as cloth napkins, glass cups, ceramic dishes, etc. with all food and beverage services.
  • 4. o Provide glass cups and ceramic mugs (instead of plastic) for in-room beverages. Place cups and mugs upside down on paper doilies (instead of covering opening with a plastic wrapping). o Donate leftover food to a local nonprofit organization and/or use a compost bin. o Donate leftover guest amenities, old furniture and appliances to charities. Try green dining. If your hotel has a restaurant, consider transitioning it into a Certified Green Restaurant. Buy organic, locally-grown food and/or plant an organic garden to provide fresh produce for your guests. Provide discounts to eco-oriented groups. Offer discounted rates to sustainable living/environmental organizations who would like stay at and/or hold meetings at your hotel. The development of Green hotel 1 promote again consumption Not only should consider hotel products impact on the environment, consider product manufacturing and sales process of environmental impact. Hotel must consider each product "ecological", the product life cycle of environmental risk. Through promoting consumption of resources, make again, improve environmental benefits of recycling. 2 to guide the customer's needs and wants Due to the large consumer brings a waste of resources and reduce the environment, so the ability to absorb wastes, scholars have proposed that we should reduce consumption, but this and consumers will against. Therefore, the process of change is needed, the intention of consumer of consumer demand to ecological harm the smallest products. Consumer of the environmental problems of sensitive must not into buying behavior, the hotel's responsibility is to communicate through various means of life, the environmental quality of consumers' desire to change into the actual potential to improve the quality of promoting environmental action. Human resource Development Human Resource Development. Human Resource Development (HRD) is the framework for helping employees develop their personal and organizational skills, knowledge, and abilities. Human Resource Development includes such opportunities as employee training, employee career development, performance management and development, coaching, mentoring, succession planning, key employee identification, tuition assistance, and organization development. HRD can give you the tools you need to manage and operate your organizations. Everything -production, management, marketing, sales, research & development, you-name-it -- everything may be more productive IF your people are sufficiently motivated, trained, informed, managed, utilized and empowered. 1.4.1 Provision of training programs for operation and development management staff on environmental management. The trend toward eco-conscious travel has brought with it a growing number of green hotel certification programs in the hospitality industry. But the sheer volume of different programs and options has led to uncertainty among travelers, meeting planners – and even the hotel operators themselves. An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a comprehensive organizational approach designed to incorporate environmental protection into the operation of any organization. The hotel can
  • 5. improve efficiency and reduce operating costs by setting specific and realistic performance targets and objectives that the entire organization can work towards. More often than not, the economic benefits are more than enough to initiate an EMS in any organization. Although many hotel operations today have incorporated environmental activities into their operations, the vast majority do not have an effective system in place to define goals, measure sucesses, and coordinate the range of activities. An EMS defines the process and direction while providing guidance to all aspects of hotel management and may combine multiple environmental programs already being executed. It is important to understand that numerous efficiencies and improvements are realized through changes to operating procedures. Objectives The objectives of my report is to share knowledge about green hotels in terms in Collaboration with the community and local organizations and Human resource Development. My professor give this to me to analyze it. My main objective is to disscuss my topic properly to my classmate to understand what my topic is and to inform about the progress of the green hotels. To inform others what you did against what you planned. to communicate to my classmates and to my professors. And to have my grades in Environmental Science. Significance of the Report Another way through which eco hotels use to conserve the environment is through the use of what nature has to offer to help them manage various services necessary for the proper management of the hotel. This would include the overuse of machines that omit a lot of carbon and other pollutants into the environment while in use. They even put up Environmental training programs that help raise awareness as well as workshops that teach others on how to best converse their environment. The need to preserve the environment is something that various governments including the United states has ensured certain standards and regulations are put into place for factories are as well other companies to ensure they maintain and completely reduce the amount of pollution they release into the environment. In case a company does not follow the set rules and regulations, their operational license can be taken away. In case you are traveling either on business or taking a vacation and are looking for an eco hotel, you can simply log into the internet and search for hotels that are eco friendly and have a NABERS rating. Such websites even rate the hotel in terms of the measures put in place to ensure the environment is preserved and taken care of.
