8. Turboprops
Although turboprop aircraft generate a lower speed than their jet-engined equivalents, they are more
economical and offer greater accessibility to smaller airports with limited runways.
Turboprops are available in all capacities, but when it comes to business and private aviation, we
talk about turboprops having a small pressurised cabin fit for 4 to 7 passengers and ideal for flight
times of up to 2 hours.
Featured aircraft:
BEECHCRAFT King Air 350
9. Entry level jets
The ‘entry level’ jets, also called ‘VLJs’ is a quite recent business aircraft category. It is a category
of small jet aircraft approved for single pilot operation, seating 2 to 4 people. They are lighter than
what is commonly termed business jets. VLJs are intended to have lower operating costs than
conventional jets, and to be able to operate from runways as short as 3,000 feet (914 m), either for
personal use or in a point-to-point air taxi service.
Featured aircraft:
HONDA HA-420 HondaJet
10. Light jets
The ‘light’ or ‘small’ jets are the business jets for short to medium range trips. Cabin sizes (and
baggage capacity) are mostly well-appointed and adequate for trips of up to 3 or 4 hour flight times.
Typically, seating is fit for up to 5 passengers with no stand-up capacity.
Featured aircraft:
CESSNA Citation CJ3+
11. Super light jets
The ‘super light’ jets combine a better performance, greater passenger and luggage capacity than
the ’light’ jet, while still able to handle the same short runways. The perfect aircraft for up to 8
passengers with a good amount of luggage space.
Featured aircraft:
EMBRAER Phenom 300
12. Midsize jets
The ‘medium’ or ‘midsize’ jet category is ideal for medium range flight legs between 3 and 5 hours,
typically coast-to-coast in the US. A comfortable cabin accommodating 8 to 10 passenger seats with
improved headroom and a separate washroom is common for this category. Some models offer a
flight attendant, whilst the later models also have much-improved luggage space.
Featured aircraft:
EMBRAER Legacy 450
13. Super midsize jets
The ‘super midsize’ jets can be considered as a separate category and as a kind of compromise
between midsize jets and long range jets; although a bit more restricted in long range capacity,
they offer many benefits of the long range jets but at more competitive rates. Increased range up to
7 hours, full standing headroom, great luggage capacity and spacious cabins make this category a
popular choice. Seating varies from 8 to 12.
Featured aircraft:
BOMBARDIER Challenger 350
14. Heavy jets
The ‘heavy’ jet category comprises private and business jets conceived for luxury long-distance
travel. Some large jets are 3-engined for transatlantic intercontinental range operations. Long range
jet aircraft feature spacious cabins, offering 6 to 10 hours range and seating for 8 to 16 in first
class executive style. Full standing headroom and galley for full inflight service are standard. Many
feature sleeping accommodation facilities.
Featured aircraft:
DASSAULT Falcon 900LX
15. Ultra long range jets
The ‘ultra long range’ jets are designed to fly non-stop for at least 12 hours at very high altitudes to
avoid busy flight levels and turbulence zones. These powerful jets can fly up to 18 passengers in the
highest level of comfort.
Featured aircraft:
BOMBARDIER Global 6000
16. VIP Airliners
VIPAirliners are a fusion of business aircraft and airliners, as these are (mostly short-haul) airliners
converted to luxury VIP-configuration and include extended range capabilities that accommodate
intercontinental long-distance travel. The spacious cabin hosts between 15 and 35 passengers,
depending on the configuration.
Featured aircraft:
AIRBUS ACJ318
