Hybrid Overview
What our enterprise customers have told us
31
• Our corporate LDAP needs to

• The catalog will need to be
customized; not all of the
services adhere to our
standards
• Customer data is heavily
regulated
• Corporate policies prevent us
from using the public cloud

For new cloud

great. What about
my “transitional”
apps that I want to
move to the
cloud?
We listened. Now you can get Bluemix in
three unique yet fully connected delivery
methods.

Seamless Experience
Regardless of which
combination you choose,
you can expect a single,
seamless experience.
Why did we take this delivery approach?
34
• Started in the public to refine the delivery of
platform as a service at scale.
• To learn valuable lessons with regards to
monitoring, availability, support and
maintenance.
• Consistently provide three deployment
models leveraging the same DevOps model
• Provide a price point reflective of the
workload in a true cloud experience
Our approach
Coming Summer 2015
IBM chose our approach based on the belief that customers will value the
turn key delivery that allows them to get started immediately with
Bluemix.
Our view is that pushing the management and infrastructure burden to the
customer equates to “pain displacement.”
We decided to provide an as a service offering that clients can utilize
quickly but is still open and non-proprietary.

skills.
Compete and get noticed
Devs love to compete - what’s
more, they want to impress
you. Let them compete to
build the best hackathon app.
The ultimate test
Who better to test out Bluemix
than the people who will end
up using it? Let your
developers decide.
Realize value quickly
You’ll get to judge live, working
applications that may deliver
real value after two days.

  3. The instant power and speed of cloud has brought about new expectations for building applications on it. Developers now expect: To be able to deploy updates to their applications in seconds To write their code in whichever tool or language they choose Each has its own distinct “personality” and followings of developers have evolved around each of these To be able to continually integrate working copies of code into a shared mainline at multiple points during the day To focus on writing code, not on the administration of servers, virtualization, operating systems, and middleware. To “fail fast” - or ensure applications fail immediately and visibly to speed debugging and fixes To integrate useful APIs into their applications - who wants to write code that’s already been written and tested? To build applications that are mobile ready - as users today expect their experience to be tailored to whatever device they happen to be using.

  9. Bluemix also allows flexibility when it comes to tooling - as, again, each developer has different preferences and needs. Tooling Options: IBM offers a web based integrated development environment (IDE) and associated git repository that allows quick deployments back to bluemix. Developers can also edit code on their local machines (with the editor of their choice - i.e. Sublime) and deploy back to Bluemix through the cloud foundry command line. Note to presenter: Other IDEs (like Eclipse, Cloud9) have direct integration with Cloud Foundry and can push code directly to bluemix, rather than a manual push by developer via command line. You may be asked about this.

  12. Global Footprint 1. IPv4/IPv6: Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the latest version of the Internet Protocol (IP), the communications protocol that provides an identification and location system for computers on networks and routes traffic across the Internet. IPv6 was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to deal with the long-anticipated problem of IPv4 address exhaustion. IPv6 is intended to replace IPv4, which still carries more than 96% of Internet traffic worldwide as of May 2014.[1][2][3] As of June 2014, the percentage of users reaching Google services over IPv6 surpassed 4% for the first time.[4] Every device on the Internet is assigned an IP address for identification and location definition. With the ever-increasing number of new devices being connected to the Internet (from computers and smartphones to the Internet of Things), the need arose for more addresses than the IPv4 address space has available. IPv6 uses a 128-bit address, allowing 2128, or approximately 3.4×1038 addresses, or more than 7.9×1028 times as many as IPv4, which uses 32-bit addresses. IPv4 provides approximately 4.3 billion addresses. The two protocols are not designed to be interoperable, complicating the transition to IPv6. However, IPv4 addresses can be mapped to a special set of IPv6 addresses, and there are a number of IPv6 transition mechanisms to allow IPv4 and IPv6 hosts to communicate with each other.3 Datacenters across three continents. 2. Global Domain Name System (DNS) : The DNS protocol is an important part of the web's infrastructure, serving as the Internet's phone book: every time you visit a website, your computer performs a DNS lookup. Complex pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, so your computer may be performing hundreds of lookups a day. 3. Global DDOS Mitigation: Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are increasing in size, frequency and duration. Large number of compromised devices ‘flood’ a target server or network with incoming messages, a DDoS attack can temporarily cripple infrastructure or even force it to shut down. IBM’s Global DDoS Protection solution monitors your online traffic and helps mitigate the effect of DDoS attacks by promptly activating a cost-effective and efficient solution. 4. Global Internet Exchanges & Peering: The primary purpose of an IXP is to allow networks to interconnect directly, via the exchange, rather than through one or more third-party networks. The advantages of the direct interconnection are numerous, but the primary reasons are cost, latency, and bandwidth. IBM SoftLayer: the Only Cloud provider in the world with a global internet backbone: 17 Network POPs including all major carrier exchanges worldwide 7 Tier 1 transit providers, 1400 private peers, pass about 500Gbps sustained IPv4 and IPv6 dual stack – every compute instance and ancillary service comes dual stacked Arbor Network & Cisco Network Analysis and DDOS Mitigation Enterprise DNS system consisting of over 400 load balanced physical nodes across 20 global locations 20,000,000 active domains 100,000+ physical nodes – millions of virtual machines
