Reshma is willing to bear a stranger's child to feed and school her own eight-
year-old son. “I want money for my son. I want him to be in one of the best
schools of Delhi so that he gets a good education and becomes a
gentleman,“ says the 28-year-old.The queues outside surrogacy centres in
the NCR show that, to many young women lacking education and job skills,
surrogacy seems a road to a better life, regardless of the risks and the pain--
not the least of which is to be separated from the babies they hope to bear.
Vasudha, 24, agreed to become a surrogate mother on learning that there's
“a lot of money“ in it. She's carrying an American couple's twins. It's been
only two months but she is looking forward to the Rs 50,000 premium she
will get for delivering them. If all goes well--no caesarian--she might agree to
become a surrogate again.
