Personal Statement and Summary of Qualifications
I am a teacher educator, highly qualified to teach graduate and undergraduate
courses in teacher education, focusing on reading and the language arts in
elementary and middle grades, and teacher and/or action research. Due to permanent
relocation in west Michigan, I seek online work, full-time or adjunct faculty in any of the
above-mentioned areas. I am also highly qualified as a teacher consultant with the
National Writing Project, to consult or lead any areas related to writing instruction. Public
school teaching in grades 1-6 preceded my successful years in academia. I entered
academia through a competitive appointment as a Teacher-in-Residence at Auburn
University Montgomery, a position that awarded me a two-year sabbatical from
Montgomery, AL public school system to become a full-time faculty member in the AUM
School of Education. During the course of this appointed position I began my PhD
program at Auburn University. I was asked to remain on at AUM at the end of my two-
year residency where I taught undergraduate literacy-related courses as an Instructor. I
earned a PhD in Curriculum & Teaching. Dec 2003 and attained Assistant professor rank.
Tenure followed May 2006. My husband’s relocation to Washington DC resulted in my
departure from AUM, and I began a five-year successful teaching career in the graduate
program, School of Education and Human Development, at Shenandoah University,
Winchester, VA, where I was promoted to Associate professor, March 2009. My
husband’s retirement in August 2010 resulted in permanent relocation to Michigan, August
2010. I began adjunct teaching Fall 2010 at Hope College, Holland, MI, a position that
continues.
