What’s Inside:
POLKCOUNTYCOMMUNITY
Our Community
In 2007, Polk County was selected as an “All-American County” by the national
Civic League. This recognition symbolizes the collective dreams of our residents to
have a great place to live as well as raise their families. Since 1949 about 500 com-
munities of all sizes (cities, towns, counties, neighborhoods and regions) have
earned this .
Polk County is located in the “Heart of Florida.” We are 35 miles from Orlando, and only 25 miles from
Tampa and 200 miles from the Georgia border. Our population is a little over .5 million people but over 7.5
million people live in a 100 mile radius of Polk County.
Our residents live in 17 small cities and towns.
Lakeland is our largest city of around 100,000
residents. Our next largest city is Winter
Haven with around 35,000 residents.
Our land mass is biggerthan the state of
Rhode Island and equal to that of
Delaware. Approximately, 33% of our
residents are under the age of 25.
Our ethnic composition closely mirrors the
nation with 80% white, 15% Black,18%
Hispanic, 2% Asian, and 1% American
Indian.
Our cost of living is lower than half the state of Florida.
Affordable housing is often half as expensive as housing found in
other areas of Florida, including Orlando and Tampa.
Polk County residents have no state or county income taxes.
Our green landscape is dotted with more than 600 spring-fed
lakes, where boating, water-skiing, and fishing are popular activi-
ties. Top rated golf courses and local attractions such as Lego-
Land, Fantasy of Flight, and Bok Sanctuary, give our residents a
wide variety of options to relax.
Our arts and sports minded residents have a wide variety of
options in Polk County.
Top of the line entertainment is provided by the Lakeland
Civic Center which houses events such as ice skating,
concerts, and sporting events.
There are also a variety of theatrical performances that occur
throughout the county.
Visit http://www.thelakelandcenter.com/
for a list of scheduled events and www.cfdc.org for

  • 3. POLKCOUNTYCOMMUNITY Our Community In 2007, Polk County was selected as an “All-American County” by the national Civic League. This recognition symbolizes the collective dreams of our residents to have a great place to live as well as raise their families. Since 1949 about 500 com- munities of all sizes (cities, towns, counties, neighborhoods and regions) have earned this . Polk County is located in the “Heart of Florida.” We are 35 miles from Orlando, and only 25 miles from Tampa and 200 miles from the Georgia border. Our population is a little over .5 million people but over 7.5 million people live in a 100 mile radius of Polk County. Our residents live in 17 small cities and towns. Lakeland is our largest city of around 100,000 residents. Our next largest city is Winter Haven with around 35,000 residents. Our land mass is biggerthan the state of Rhode Island and equal to that of Delaware. Approximately, 33% of our residents are under the age of 25. Our ethnic composition closely mirrors the nation with 80% white, 15% Black,18% Hispanic, 2% Asian, and 1% American Indian. Our cost of living is lower than half the state of Florida. Affordable housing is often half as expensive as housing found in other areas of Florida, including Orlando and Tampa. Polk County residents have no state or county income taxes. Our green landscape is dotted with more than 600 spring-fed lakes, where boating, water-skiing, and fishing are popular activi- ties. Top rated golf courses and local attractions such as Lego- Land, Fantasy of Flight, and Bok Sanctuary, give our residents a wide variety of options to relax. Our arts and sports minded residents have a wide variety of options in Polk County. Top of the line entertainment is provided by the Lakeland Civic Center which houses events such as ice skating, concerts, and sporting events. There are also a variety of theatrical performances that occur throughout the county. Visit http://www.thelakelandcenter.com/ for a list of scheduled events and www.cfdc.org for additional information about Central Florida. 3
