2. Definition of the Computer.
A computer is a machine that manipulates data
according to a set of instructions .
A computer is a programmable machine that
receives input, stores and provides output in a
useful format, they can be constructed out of
almost anything.
3. Father of the Computer.
Charles Babbage, a British Mathematics Professor.
He regarded as the father of computer.
He was born in England in 1792 as the son of a rich banker from
Devon.
He began to design a difference engine in 1821.
4. Abacus.
Abacus is the first known device used for calculation.
It was invented by Chinese more than 5000 years ago.
The abacus was made of a wooden frame with poles attached to
it.
It is a calculator used by manually sliding bids along rods.
5. First Generation.
First generation computer’s duration was 1940-1956.
Vacuum tubes was the electronic technology used in first generation.
Eniac was the first electronic digital computer.
It used about 18,000 vacuum tubes.
It size was too much large as room.
The first generation computer produces too much heat.
6. Second Generation.
Second generation’s duration was 1956-1963.
Transistors was the electronic technology used in second generation.
Storage capacity of computer also increase during this generation.
Second generation computers also started showing the characteristics of modern day
computers with abilities such as printers, disk storage and operating system.
7. Third Generation.
Third generation’s duration was 1964-1971.
In third generation computer transistor were replaced
with Integrated circuit.
This generation machine uses magnetic tape and magnetic
disk secondary storage devises.
8. Fourth Generation.
Fourth generation’s duration was 1971-future.
In fourth generation computer Integrated circuit were replaced with
Microprosser.
Computing speed increased.
Due to this reduction of cost and the availability of the computer power at a
small place allowed everybody user to benefit.
9. Napier Bones.
John Napier is the worlds first calculator.
In 1617, the last year of his life, Napier invented a tool called
Napier Bones.
It is useful for multiplication and division.
And also this rod has 10 rods.
10. Arithmometer.
A mechanical calculator invented by Thomas De Colmar.
The first reliable, useful and commercially successful calculating
machine.
The machine could perform the 4 basic mathematic functions.
The first mass-produced calculating machine.
11. Tabulating Machine.
Tabulating machine was an electromechanical machine.
The machine were invented by Herman Hollerith.
This machine was developed to help process data for the 1890
census.
Tabulating machine was another name called Hollerith tabulating
machine.
