The imperative is used when you want to tell or command someone to do something or give instructions.

The verb comes first.


                                           Regular verbs                             Irregular verbs with a change of
                                                                                     vowel in du form
                                           e.g. schneiden - to cut
                                           e.g. kaufen - to buy                      e.g. geben - to give
                                                                                     e.g. essen - to eat

  Du you singular; (informal)              - remove -en                              Gib das Gemüse in die Pfanne.
                                           - add -e                                  Iss die Suppe!
                                           Schneide das Brot.
                                           Kaufe 150 Gramm Aufschnitt!


  Ihr you (plural)                         Schneidet das Brot.                       Gebt das Gemüse in die Pfanne.
  - remove -en                             Kauft 150 Gramm Aufschnitt.               Esst die Suppe!
  - add et or t

  Sie you singular; (formal)               Schneiden Sie das Brot.                   Geben Sie das Gemüse in die
                                           Kaufen Sie 150 Gramm Aufschnitt.          Pfanne.
  - leave -en                                                                        Essen Sie die Suppe!
  - add Sie after verb


You add an exclamation mark at the end of the sentence if you are commanding someone to do something. Written
instructions do not use exclamation marks and often the imperative is avoided by using the infinitive form of the verb:

Kartoffeln schälen und kochen. Eier schlagen und in die Schüssel geben.




                                                                     Schneide das Brot.
TASK
- Write imperative sentences in both du and Sie forms.
- Use the infinitive verbs and pictures to help you.
- Remember: these sentences will be in the accusative case.
