Business success in Solomon’s Room - Pentecostal Credit Union
Students on the Pentecostal Credit Union (PCU) Moneywise Business Development Programme got the chance to pitch their business ideas at our ‘Solomon’s Room’, Dragon’s-Den- style event on 30 January.
More than 100 church leaders, community influencers and Christian business owners joined us for the evening, which took place at The Royal Society in London, SW1.
We named our event ‘Solomon’s Room’ after King Solomon – for us, the ultimate Moneywise entrepreneur. As with all our activities, our business development programme is grounded in biblical principles.
On the night, we were delighted to welcome four highly successful business owners as our ‘Solomons’: Michael Petrie of Cloudstream, Antonia Burrell of Antonia Burrell Holistic Skincare, Reggie Cole of Buy2 Let Cars and Patrick Reid of PJ’s Community Services.
All our students – Tanya Aquaah, Freddie Brown, Glynis Brewster- Nathan, Andrew and Shireen Morrison, and Sascha Layne – won promises of mentoring and business development support.
The evening was hosted by our course teacher, businesswoman Claudine Reid MBE.

2. Hi! I’m Anca Bordei (pictured below) and I’m writing Lauren’s column
for this issue, because I am the PCU’s temporary Loans and Business
Officer until Lauren returns from maternity leave later in the year.
Lauren on loans
I will be working for the PCU three days a week,
processing your loan applications. I am also
responsible for member communications –
responding to your emails, phone calls and letters.
I am looking forward to meeting more of you in the
months to come.
New life at the PCU
Meanwhile, I am pleased to pass on the news that
Going digital in 2018
Our 2016 member survey showed us that many of our
customers now want online services – especially as we
attract new, younger members.
So, in 2018, we will be focusing on upscaling our
financial technology. It means that in future, we will be
able to offer you:
• a PCU debit card for making purchases at home,
abroad or online – whether you’re an individual or
corporate member
• a new interactive website so that you can manage
your account online
Lauren gave birth to a beautiful baby
girl in January (they are pictured
above). The PCU send Lauren and
baby all their love.
The PCU is getting ready to embrace the digital revolution – with services
you can access via your computer or smartphone.
• transaction banking – allowing you to make and
receive payments to and from third parties (great news
for our corporate members and business owners)
• a mobile app, so that you can access your account
on your smartphone.
These services will be much more convenient for
customers who rarely visit our office. They will also
reduce staff processing time. Going digital is a key part
of our strategy to grow and develop the PCU.
Watch out for more information about the launch
of these services.
Young people from the PCU’s
Youth Shadow Board spent a day
volunteering at the New Testament
Assembly (NTA) in Tooting. They
were supporting the church’s
Christmas Hamper Programme.
The New Testament Assembly has
delivered an impressive 2,914
hampers in the past eight years –
660 this Christmas alone. The
project was initially started by Amy
Rose Powell MBE in 2008.
Our young people spent a busy
Saturday in December helping NTA
church members with shopping,
packing and the distribution of this
year’s hampers. Most went to single
parents, pensioners and households
on a low income – whatever their
religious persuasion or ethnicity.
Youth Shadow Board assists with NTA Christmas hampers
We see this as an essential local social
service, which we are pleased to
support. One member said: “We at the
Youth Shadow Board are privileged to
take part in this.”
The NTA hamper team were very
impressed our youngsters. Bishop
Delroy Powell said: “Your partnering
with NTA...has made a difference in
the lives of hundreds of some of the
most needy people in our community
Our first guest speaker, Pentecostal minister Bishop Wayne
Malcolm (who is known as ‘The Business Bishop’), shared
that it is: “moral, right and spiritual” for church leaders to
support entrepreneurship within their congregations.

Our second guest speaker, businessman Levi Roots, got a
standing ovation for his inspiring and humorous talk, which
described his life journey from a Jamaican childhood to the
owner of the UK’s Reggae Reggae sauce brand.
The PCU’s CEO Shane Bowes challenged church leaders to
“educate, support, nurture and encourage” business
entrepreneurship within their congregations, by hosting
seminars, making links with Christian business networks,
preaching business-inspired sermons and providing
spiritual support for entrepreneurs.
The PCU is now firmly set on promoting entrepreneurship
and business ownership as a
way to support the socio-
economic development of
our communities in the
Pentecostal church.

PCU founder shares
his life story
The Revd. Carmel Jones,
who founded the PCU back
in 1979, has published his
autobiography. It’s a
fascinating account of his
life and work in the
Pentecostal community.
The fifth of six children, the
Revd. Jones grew up in the Bye-
berry district, in the Parish of St.
Elizabeth in Jamaica.
He arrived in England on 21 August 1955 and, the
following year, met Iveline – the woman who would
become his wife, and mother to their three children.
A mechanical engineer by trade, the Revd. Jones became
a Pentecostal church leader by vocation. At the core of
the story is a record of his spiritual journey. It also
recounts the early years of the Pentecostal Credit Union.
Told with humour and in faith, this is an uplifting story.
Copies are available from the office for £6, with the
proceeds going to the Equiano Benevolent Gift Scheme.
