An overview of PASCAL's member engagement initiatives, presented at the general membership meeting, June 11, 2015, by Ellan Jenkinson, PASCAL Member Engagement & Training Librarian.
3. Outreach
Site Visits
• Open, face-to-face communication
• Your opportunity to ask questions, report
problems and provide suggestions
On campus presentations
• Available to talk with students, faculty
• Conduct training for staff
• Or provide materials for you to use
4. Training – What’s worked?
Recent e-book training was a success!
– The first round of e-book training sessions
were completed December 2014 –April 2015
– About 200 participants so far
– E-book training resources are being added to
the website
– Look for additional e-book training sessions
later this year
5. Training – Needs Assessment
The PASCAL training needs survey is now open!
• Response rate has been very good
• Initial feedback:
– Training for PASCAL programs & resources are a top priority
– Appetite for training lead by experts in the PASCAL
community
– Desire for regional and on-site training at individual
institutions
– Regional training facilities being identified
6. Training – Next steps
Likely training initiatives will include:
• PASCAL orientation materials for new staff
• Training Resources Library on the PASCAL
website
• Identifying experts in the PASCAL community for
member lead training
• Coordinating vendor lead training
7. Marketing & Communications
• Updated PASCAL website – Fall 2015
• Regular updates for members using new &
existing channels
• Updated promotional materials for your users
• New branding materials and toolkit for users
• Social media channels
Follow us!
8. Promotion
• PASCAL is in a unique position to champion
South Carolina’s academic libraries
• We want to promote our members and
share success stories
• PASCAL will be celebrating 15 years in
2016!
9. Assessment
• Tracking use of core resources &
programs is important for many reasons
• Looking at new reporting methods for
members:
• Regular reporting of usage stats
• Annual report
10. Core Resource Use Assessment
What did we look at:
• PASCAL Delivers Use
– Borrowing per FTE
– Cost per transaction
• E-Resources
– Use per FTE for EBSCO Academic Search Premier &
Academic Search Complete
• E-Books
– Use per FTE for ebrary & EBSCO subscription packages

12. Core Resource Use Assessment
Challenges:
• Initial use assessment doesn’t reveal
much in terms of trends
• We’d like to see higher use overall
• Training and promotion are needed
13. Member feedback is key
We want to hear from you!
We want to provide multiple feedback channels:
• Surveys
• Feedback forms on new site
• Connect with us through social media
• Contact me!
We know there is a need for more face to face interaction -- I would love to visit your library!
Tell us how we can better help you meet your institutional goals
Consider me your customer care liaison
Thanks to the ETF, Caroline Mills
This training reached front-line staff – those who directly share PASCAL resources with your end users – and a group with that we don’t currently engage with enough
Surveys sent our after the each session allowed them to tweak the format slightly – add more hands on, time for discussion
Over 100 responses – keep them coming – open thru June 30
Trends from survey so far – PASCAL programs and services are training priorities
Expert lead – thanks to those who have already volunteered
And NO ONE wants to train on a MONDAY!
Directors responses being looked at separately
Next steps will depend largely on member feedback but based on what I’ve heard from members thus far….
Orientation packet for new staff at member libraries
Training Resources Library - Identify & share best practices, tools
Vendor lead training: Quarterly Proquest ebook webinars & Possible EBSCO Admin training late summer

Possible committee or working group to advise on training
Possibly the greatest challenge for a consortium such as PASCAL is communication. You are 55 separate institutions geographically dispersed around the state. But engaging all of our members in conversation is crucial as we move forward. New initiatives such as the CCC and IRTF
PASCAL uses libguides for site – will be migrating to 2.0, updating and adding new content
Possible newsletter with regular updates on committee and staff activities
PASCAL’s 15th anniversary coming up!!
We need to promote both the PASCAL consortium and our member institutions
Stakeholders need to know the contributions you’re making to higher ed in SC
Lots of great things happening out there!
Working on an overall use assessment – to ensure that the resources provided are effective & cost efficient
Eventually – a PASCAL dashboard
For the entire consortium and within each peer group we pulled out the high, low, median and mean. This provides a snapshot of schools with high, median and low use.
Further broken down by FTE BAND
2 Year schools, overall lower median use of core resources compared to 4 year BUT, in every peer group, in every type and size of institution there are school with high use across the board and schools with very low use overall
Challenges:
Would like to see higher use across the board
Training and promotion are needed

As a member organization your feedback is crucial to our success
Member feedback will be particularly important as the CCC & IRTF go forward with their work
