People are booking flights, reservations, and hotels online, and patients are coming to expect the same type of services from their physicians. Your website plays a big role in guiding patients through the process and making it easier for them to accomplish these tasks. Your website needs to accomplish 3 main goals for your patients: guide, explain, and enable. Guide Your Patients When you see your patients in person, you are guiding them in making health decisions. Your website design is an extension of that. In order to effectively communicate with your patients online, your website design must be modern, easy to use on all devices, and easy to navigate. Modern Website Design - Modern website designs convey a certain level of quality, and are often easier to navigate. Modern designs tend to be cleaner, placing the focus on the information your patients need to know. Mobile-Friendly Design - Many patients will access your website on mobile devices, so it’s important to have a mobile-friendly design. The easiest way to accomplish this is to go with a responsive design, which will adapt to fit any screen size. Easy to Navigate - Make your address, phone number, and specialties easy to find. Clearly label navigation items, and avoid cluttered website pages. Make your location and phone number available on every page of your website so patients can easily find that information. Explain Your Procedures & Services Give patients enough information to make a decision, just as you would when seeing patients in your office. Your website content can reassure patients and help them learn more about your practice. Explain Your Specialties - At a minimum, list out your specialties. Ideally, you should also have content that explains each procedure or service. Create a reliable source of information for patients. Answer Common Questions - Create website content that answers questions for patients so they don’t need to keep calling your office. This content could contain FAQs or a set of pre- and post-op instructions to help reassure patients. Enable Patients to Take Next Steps Help patients accomplish what they came to do on your website--make an appointment, or contact you for more information. Appointment Scheduling - Allow patients to book an appointment right away to increase the chances that they will follow through. Add an appointment request form directly to your site, use an appointment booking service like ZocDoc, or use an EMR or EHR to offer online appointment scheduling. Contact Forms - Make contact forms available on your website so that patients can quickly and easily submit routine requests and questions to your office. Intake Forms - Allow patients to fill out your intake forms online, or have them available to print out before the appointment. This will save your patients the trouble of arriving early to fill out forms. Use your website to your advantage to connect with patients.
