From the event organizer: Dear Friend, You are invited on Friday, December 20, 2013 to spend a day honoring the innovation that has built and is still growing South Bend. As a community, we honor our past that relentlessly pursued the innovative spirit that built our community and embodied the name Studebaker. Fifty years ago on December 20th the lights turned off on the last Studebaker facility. However, the hard work and craftsmanship that thrived in those plants live on. From 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, Union Station Technology Center is opening Ivy Tower (Building 84) for guided tours. The Studebaker Driver’s Club will offer special tours, with Studebaker retiree guides starting at 2:30 pm. The Studebaker Administration Building will also be available for tours from 12:00 pm to 4:30 pm. All tours will start from 635 S. Lafayette Street in South Bend. With the existing development plans, this could be one of the last times that the facility will be open for tours in its original state. At 5:00 pm in Union Station’s grand hall, we will host an event to spotlight South Bend’s innovation. Specifically, the program will honor former Studebaker retirees, highlight current innovation in our community and point to innovation of the future. Shortly after 6:00 pm, please join us outside Union Station, near Coveleski Stadium and throughout downtown to see our City spotlighted, demonstrating that the light of innovation that sparked our community remains on and bright today. You are also encouraged to visit the Studebaker National Museum (free admission that day), the South Bend Museum of Art, and other downtown South Bend activities. This project transformed a 300 square foot empty public storefront at local radio station, WHYR in Baton Rouge, LA, into a listening room and record shop. The shop hopes to bring people together through music and performing arts while re-activating the building's corner space for the community. The shop also serves as a creative way to utilize the station's extensive vinyl collection. The non-profit radio station sells the donated records for $1 to support its operations.

A presentation given to the Isle of Man JCC by Ramsey Crookall: It is hard to believe that three years have passed since the onset of the global credit crisis. In the intervening period equity markets collapsed but due to the intervention by Governments and Central Banks they have now recovered much of the losses. Bond yields on the other hand have fallen to record low levels, while certain commodities, particularly gold and industrial metals have forged ahead amid hopes of a robust global economic recovery. So what does it all mean? Have all the problems gone away, or is it all an illusion? In this short presentation, Stuart Cowan and Peter Robertson will review the evidence and try to determine what the future holds for global markets. The main assets that will be covered are bonds, equities, gold and other commodities, with a brief mention of currency. Stuart Cowan FCSI is a Director of Ramsey Crookall. He has forty years career experience working in stock broking and Investment Management. Peter Robertson FCSI is Senior Investment Manager at Ramsey Crookall. He has twenty years industry experience.

Tim Craine is Director of the newly established Business Development Agency (BDA), part of the Department of Economic Development. As Director of the BDA, Tim has responsibility for Financial Services, Industry, Tourism, Space Commerce, E-Business/E-Gaming, Film & Media and Government’s Country strategy.

Despite being only a few years old Social Media is a phenomenon that has transformed the world we live in. Organisations now have a new medium to deal with, a medium that has enhanced some businesses and impaired, if not totally devastated others. This has also resulted in the creation of a number of new opportunities, thanks to reduced barriers to entry and the global reach of the Internet. The presentation will focus on three waves of technology that have led to where we are today, namely computerisation, the Internet and finally Social Media. We will discuss how these waves have impacted Competitive Advantage and also how they have been brought to bear on local businesses. JCC are pleased to present Owen Cutajar, a technology consultant who has worked with a number of organisations helping them make best use of ICT at both a strategic and a tactical level. Having a background in both technology and business spheres Owen has been able to bridge the gap between the two disciplines enabling him to bring technology into the boardroom and strategic intent to technology teams.

Chris will also consider how the outlook for the Island’s IT industry and project management is affected by the current economic situation and outlook. Chris Davies is the Chief Operating Officer of Intelligence Ltd one of the Isle of Man’s largest consultancy companies. Chris has over 25 years experience of the IT industry in a variety of roles including hardware and software development, sales, marketing and project and corporate management. He has worked for both public and private companies and has a wealth of experience of projects of all sizes. Chris is currently working with the Isle of Man Government and other clients providing strategy, programme and project management consultancy.

This article aims to demonstrate that the Lula government is faced with two major challenges in its effort to promote Brazil's economic and social development. The first challenge, of an economic nature, is represented by the obstacles that exist with the spending cap policy, despite the flexibility provided by the fiscal framework and the existence of an independent Central Bank, which make the Brazilian government unable to coordinate its fiscal and monetary policies, make public investments in the expansion of the economy and obtain macroeconomic stability and, the second challenge, of a political nature, is represented by the obstacles existing in the National Congress due to the fact that it does not have a majority in parliament, which prevents the federal government from putting its national developmental project into practice and fully meet social demands. For Brazil's progressive forces to re-elect President Lula in the 2026 presidential elections and obtain a parliamentary majority in the National Congress committed to political, economic and social advances, the Lula government will have to be successful on the economic front, promoting the expansion of the economy, increasing significantly generating jobs and income, keeping inflation under control and meeting the maximum social demands that benefit, above all, the country's underserved populations. Brazil's progressive forces need to commit, starting from the 2024 municipal elections, towards to elect the maximum number of mayors and councilors committed to Brazil's political, economic and social advances. These are the conditions to prevent, in 2026, right-wing extremists from regaining the Presidency of the Republic, expanding their participation in state governments and the National Congress and putting their nefarious anti-social and anti-national project into practice.
