James Corden Is Fabulous at 50
By Debbie Elicksen.
You may have heard about or viewed James Corden‘s Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke with Rod Stewart.
If not, it’s worth a view and maybe even some of the 29 million+ views the Carpool Karaoke with Justin
Bieber has received.
Corden is a flipping genius.
Although it seems odd that the best late night television shows feature men named “Jimmy,” Corden takes a
different twist on the format, shunning the traditional Johnny Carson-like outline that seems to be cookie cut in
all other programs. When Reggie Watts is the band leader, you know you’re in for something completely
different.
Corden, who also doubles as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, has shed the
desk during his guest interviews and brings them all out at the same time. This elevates the energy of the
show, which is high right from the opening monologue to closing credits. There is even a functioning bar at
one corner of the stage.
The whole show radiates fun, vitality, and Corden’s warm spirit shines throughout. The format begins with him
being introduced by Reggie Watts, who shouts out, “Live from” a different center every night. After the
monologue and they “roll the title,” a camera visits each of the guest dressing rooms for a short introduction.

Of course, what makes the show are the crazy innovative videos Corden creates. For example, he went on the
street and found a young couple, who were strangers to each other, introduced them and set them up for a
blind date. Then there is the comedic serenading by the impromptu lyricist that is Reggie Watts.
One of my favorite shows was when Corden, his crew, and his guests (Jeff Goldblum and Beck) crashed
Tommy’s house and recorded the show in his living room after trying a few other houses at random. The best
part was that Tommy didn’t know who the guests were until they came into the house. It turned out that the
musical guest, Beck, was Tommy’s obsessive favorite. This is just the best.
Corden was tapped for The Late Late on March 23, 2015 (taking over from Craig Ferguson) and aired his
50th show on Thursday, July 16, 2015. The program is filmed in Los Angeles and produced by Rob Crabbe,
Ben Winston, and James Corden.
Corden had much of his entertainment success in Britain on stage, film, and television. He has received a
Tony Award for best actor in a play (2012) as Francis Henshall in One Man, Two Guvnors; a BAFTA
Television Award for Best Comedy Performance for Gavin & Stacey, a BBC sitcom; and many more.
On August 8, Corden will host the 2015 Television Critics Association Awards.
