Good afternoon and welcome to the 4th Annual Orrville Area Chamber State of the Chamber luncheon. I remember the first State of the Chamber held in 2016 at Heartland Point. There were 40 people in attendance and I was happy that this small group showed up to hear what the Chamber Board was working on. We moved the luncheon here to The Pines last year as we needed a larger venue and today we have 140 in attendance! Thank you for coming and for your continued investment in the Orrville Area Chamber, not only your financial investment but your engagement in the work of the chamber shown by your attendance here today and your participation as volunteers on chamber committees and projects.
I would like to express my appreciation to The Commerical & Savings Bank, the Red Circle Sponsor for our luncheon today. CSB has been a sponsor of this event since the very beginning four years ago and have championed the Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce mission and Vision 2025 every step of the way. The Commerical and Savings Bank president, Eddie Steiner, regrets that he is unable to be in attendance today but sent a great group of his staff to represent the Bank including the Orrville Banking Center Manager and Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce Board Member, Les Bertschy. Thank you for your service.
The Black Circle Sponsors include Redwood, who we will hear from later in the program about the new Apartment Neighborhood that they are developing on the Northwest side of the City of Orrville and The Pines Golf Club and Restaurant who has been an outstanding host for us today. Special shout out to Carolyn Clarke, event manager, and to chef XXX for preparing the wonderful buffet stations. Let’s give a round of applause to The Pines.
Thank you Lori. And thank all of you for your attendance today. I am excited to share with you the work that the Chamber has done to advance the Vision 2025 vision over the past year and invite you to get engaged in with continuing to advance the Vision in 2019.
First a quick recap of how we got here.
In 2014 the Chamber experienced a transition in leadership as Lori Reinbolt stepped into the role as president of our organization.
In 2015 and 2016 the Chamber embarked on the transformation of our physical space with a complete renovation of our office building.
Also in 2016, under the leadership of chairman, Tommy Brenner, the Chamber Board also immersed themselves in transformational discussions around the eight influences identified by the Horizon Initiative. These are listed on the screen.
The Horizon Initiative was developed by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives in 2015 to provide a framework for Chambers across the country – regardless of location or size of community – to engage in discussions about what their Chamber would BE in 2025. I was privileged to be part of these discussions and in 2017 under the leadership of Board chair Jen Kessel, we crafted a map for Vision 2025.
At the center of the map is the word RESOURCE. This is what we identified that the Chamber would BE to our members. In a nutshell this is the goal of Vision 2025. To be an essential resource for our members.
We also identified three strategic focus areas for the Chamber. Workforce Sustainability. Community Sustainability. And Member Engagement.
So With our newly developed Vision 2025 map in hand in 2018 we began the process of transcending the traditional view of the Chamber of Commerce – shifting the paradigm from the activities a Chamber does to becoming the essential resource for our members.
I’m not a big picture guy. I like data and measurements. Items that can be accomplished and then checked off the list. The abstract nature of this map that I was handed challenged me and I often wasn’t quite sure where we were going.
Jen Kessel introduced the stoplight system to the board. Progress towards goals is either green for go/accomplished, yellow for in progress and red for not started. This gave me some direction but there seemed to be a lot of yellow lights on our goal list at the end of the year. So, it is a good thing that I have a 2nd year as chairman to keep this transformation going.
I’m pleased to announce to you today The State of the Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce is gaining traction toward realizing Vision 2025
Let’s take a look at the numbers
Organizational Membership totals 310. This is reflects a 15% growth in the past five years! This is significant not only because it is historic for our chamber to have surpassed the 300 mark – a first time in our history - but because the trend of chambers – especially smaller chambers throughout the country - is on the decline.
Further validating that the Orrville Area Chamber is on the right track is a 95% membership retention rate from 2017 to 2018. A trend well above the national average of 70%. I’m told we are on track to repeat with 2019 renewals.
43 new members joined the Chamber in 2018.
Will the new members that joined in 2018 that are here with us today please stand.
Welcome! I want to thank Membership Services Coordinator, Michelle Hedberg, and the membership committee Les Bertschy and Alyssa Carpenter for their work in developing a comprehensive membership recruitment and retention plan this past year. Nine new members have joined the chamber so far in 2019.
30% of our membership participates in at least one cost savings program offered by the Chamber. Many members are participating in more than one program.
60% of our members increased visibility for their product, services or programs by taking advantage of the Chamber’s advertising and sponsorship opportunities. Our goal is always to find the best fit to help out members achieve their goals whether that is though an email Blast, social media post, website ad or event sponsorship.
In 2018 the Orrville Area Chamber offered more than 100 opportunities for members to network and connect in meaningful ways. Attendance at today’s luncheon is one of many opportunities that the Chamber will provide for connections in 2019. But keep in mind that we are a forward thinking chamber and we realize that connections do not always happen face to face. Stay tuned for innovative new opportunities to network and connect with the Chamber in the future.
Connecting Communities. Expanding Possibilities. This was adopted as our tag line in 2018. It embraces the Orrville Area Chamber’s commitment to all of our members, regardless of where they are physically located.
Our 300 members represent more than 12,000 employees and are physically located in 24 communities in Ohio. In 2018, a review of the membership data revealed that for the first time, 51% of our members were NOT located in Orrville. This makes the word AREA in our name more important than ever. And it expands the possibilities of our Chamber network.
At this time I would like to recognize the 2019 Chamber Board of Directors, starting with the Executive Committee. Please stand as I call your names

Innovative member engagement experiences begin with a compelling message and a consistent brand that the public clearly identifies with an organization.
In 2018 the Chamber’s Marketing Committee developed Branding Guidelines for the Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce. We engaged the professional services of the IMPACT Group and participated in a Smart Start.
The outcomes included a bold new logo, the tagline Connecting Communities. Expanding Possibilities.; and a variety of 3 minute messages to further explain our brand. These messages all begin with “The Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce is an essential resource for our members and community. By promoting active engagement, the Chamber’s network empowers our members to achieve their goals.”
From this work the Board of Directors also embarked on the journey of identifying 3 core values that will guide the actions of the Chamber as we gain traction to Vision 2025. These values are:
Member Focused
Committed to the Business Community
Responsible & Accountable
Over the coming months, the Chamber’s marketing team will be developing marketing strategies based on this framework. I invite anyone with Marketing, Advertising, social media or related skills to volunteer to serve on the Chamber’s marketing team.
The Chamber adopted ChamberMaster, a cloud based CRM system in 2015. This year, in order to provide a more engaging membership experience, we will be transitioning to a new CRM platform called EventBank.
The Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce will be the first Chamber in the State of Ohio to implement this innovative cloud platform which consolidates association management, event management, membership management, email marketing, and finance in one.
A slick mobile app puts the power of this tool into the hands of our members to maximize the member engagement experience.
Watch for an invitation to connect with the Orrville Area Chamber via EventBank later this month.
The Chambers Vision 2025 for Member Engagement is a two way street. The Chamber needs to provide clear paths for members to get involved with the Chamber.
For those of you that are interested in saving your business money, I invite you to learn more about the various cost savings programs offered by the Chamber. Programs like group health insurance, workers compensation group rating programs, payroll management, IT and unified communications systems, office supplies and more.
If you are looking to expand your network, consider sharing your expertise by serving on a Chamber committee. Consider this your invitation to come to the table and contribute to shaping the Chamber of the Future. If you are a CEO or manager – encourage your up and coming young professionals to get involved. They are our future and their contributions matter.
Not looking for a big commitment, attend events. There are many opportunities to choose from each month. Connect with the Eventbank App and never miss out of what’s up next.
Lori Reinbolt
The Chamber has been a partner with the Workforce Innovation Network or WIN even before it was named WIN. I served on the WIN Steering Committee from the inception of this county wide workforce initiative.
Over the past several years the Orrville Area Chamber has assisted with the development and execution of Wayne County Healthcare Day in March, Wayne County Career Expo in May, Vital Connections in June and Wayne County Manufacturing Day in Oct. All of these programs depend upon the collaborative partnerships between WIN, Wooster Chamber, Tri County Educational Services, Ohio Means Jobs Wayne County as well as our local school districts and business partners
These programs provide opportunities for students to explore the two largest industry employment sectors in Wayne County – Manufacturing and Healthcare. The Career Expo actually provides high school seniors with the opportunity to connect with employers and potentially secure employment prior to high school graduation.
Vital Connections serves to connect educators with industry professionals. The three day program immerses teachers into the world of work – a peek into modern manufacturing facilities and an opportunity to hear directly from employers what skills they most need students to have as they prepare to enter the workforce.
To further ensure that our students are prepared to enter the workforce, the Chamber and Heartland Education Community are collaborating on a pilot program to assist students at Orrville High School students in earning the Ohio Means Jobs Readiness Seal. The Wayne County Schools Career Center is also working on implementing the seal and they are participating on our committee as well.
This is a new initiative from the Ohio Department of Education that was introduced in 2018. Earning the seal requires students to work with at least three experienced and trusted mentors who validate the demonstration of these skills in school, work or the community. To accomplish this, cooperation is needed between educators, community partners and employers all working together to mentor and students and then validate competency in the 15 professional skills. This is complex and once piloted, we hope to share the model with all of the local school districts.
Entrepreneurism is an emerging trend in our economy. The Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Akron SCORE to bring the full range of their business education and support services to our community. In March, SCORE will be presenting a 12 week workshop, Positioning Your Business for Growth, that will include educational sessions combined with business coaching.
SCORE has recruited several new Mentors from Wayne County and continues to search for seasoned or retired Business professionals to serve as mentors to new business owners. If you or someone you know has an interest in becoming a mentor, please let me know.
The Chamber is also very pleased to champion Schantz MakerSpace and the innovative and inspiring movement that has developed around this
History – how we got to where we are today
Creating a destination place for visitors and locals a like.
What did we dream up? Market West
The transformation has begun on W Market Street. In 2018 the former Dutch Country Apple Dumpling Property was transformed by the entrepreneurial spirit. Today you will find in this space, The Red Bucket, Sure House Coffee and Runion’s Furniture Outlet.
Across the street the condemned building that once housed Bowman Cleaners is now green space thanks to the City of Orrville with financial assistance from our partners at the Wayne County Commissioners office and the State of Ohio.
Jerry’s Café purchased and razed the former Ron’s Barber Shop with plans for an outdoor patio
The Chamber’s mission is to identify economic development opportunities. This is the work that we have done.
In 2017, Orrville City Council allocated funds to complete a Retail Feasibility Study. This study was also financially supported by the Chamber and the Orrville Area Development Foundation.
In 2018, the Chamber worked with our partners at the Wayne Economic Development Council and the Fund for Our Economic Future to apply and be designated as an Opportunity Zone. There are a limited number of Opportunity Zones in the State of Ohio and only two in Wayne County. One in Orrville and the other in Rittman. This is a brand new opportunity to incentivize private investment by deferring capital gains.
If you study the City of Orrville’s census data, you will find that the poverty rate is significant. This should not come as a surprise as we see this in our schools, the Orrville Area Boys and Girls Club and our social service agencies.
On the other hand, there is great wealth being generated by the many business and manufacturing companies located in our area. We have jobs and the people working here are earning good wages. Wages that many take somewhere else at the end of the day to spend and invest.
The question then is this – If we do nothing, what will the community look like in 10 years?
The Chamber has identified what we think is a great opportunity for commercial and community development but that is as far as we can champion the effort. In 2019, the Chamber will pass on the Market West project to the Orrville Area Development Foundation. The foundation will be revived as the Commercial Development driver and take on Market West as well as the board scope of commercial development throughout the entire Orrville community.
Orrville Area Development Foundation is seeking investors to support this new focus on Commercial Development. If you are inspired by what I’ve shared today, let’s talk more. Now is the time to step or this opportunity may die on the vine. That would be a tragedy and a lost opportunity.
By transitioning commercial development away from the Chamber we are able to gain traction on other initiatives for community sustainability.
A goal this year is to develop community onboarding tools and resources for local employers to share with new employees as they are hired. Tools that HR Managers can easily access and share.
Community Sustainability depends upon a new generation of community leaders. Young people who are willing to step up to run for public office and to serve as board members for non-profit and civic organizations. The Chamber can provide resources to bridge this gap in the generations.
We also embrace the role of entrepreneurism in our local economy. As Lori mentioned earlier, we have established a strong relationship with Akron SCORE, support Schantz MakerSpace and the Wayne County Mini Maker Faire. There are trends emerging that are transforming the workplace and the way we work.
Finally, the contributions that our Chamber member businesses and their employees make to better the community are significant and we are excited to introduce a new award to recognize these contributions. I’d like to turn the mic back over to Vince to tell you about this award.
