When we say “tactical”, we’re mostly referring to a dynamic range of shooting scenarios from close-quarters to mid-range
engagements—usually with an AR-15 or another similar platform. Thus, the “low power variable”, or “one-to-something”
style scopes reign supreme for their ability to go from 1x on the low end, to 4x, 6x or even 8x on the high end. These optics
dominate 3-Gun competitions and are being widely accepted for use by law enforcement, military and private citizens for
self-defense as well. From entry-level to ultra high-end, we have many options in low power variables, but which do we rec-
ommend the most for an excellent combination of budget-friendliness and rugged performance? The Strike Eagle 1-6x24,
and here are six reasons why.
RETICLE
Fast and intuitive, with enough information to let you shift on the fly when
compensating for bullet drop, the BDC reticle in the Viper HS can mean
the difference between a winter's worth of meat or tag soup. We crunched
ballistics curves of common hunting cartridges when designing the hash-
mark-based drop references to get you in the kill zone. Run your own range
experiments or use a ballistics calculator to fine tune it for true customization.
TURRET STYLE
We spend a lot of time talking about exposed elevation turrets, but what's
less talked about is the simplicity of more traditional capped turrets. These
turrets track as true as the day is long, once you get that baby zeroed and
thread on the protective caps for complete protection.
ZERO RESET
Here’s a handy feature, once you get your scope sighted in, you can reindex
the zero reference mark. Simply lift the turret to disengage the clicks and
turn until the zero lines up with the corresponding vertical hash. Not only
does this satisfy OCD-compliance regulations, it gives you a home base to
come back to if you need to make temporary adjustments in the field.

TUBE DIAMETER
Rifles aren’t perfectly straight—and we admit—it’s sometimes nice to
make a field adjustment when executing a shot at distance. A good scope
accounts for adjustments by use of the turrets and the internal erector
assembly. The tubing of the Viper HS is machined from one piece of
aluminum and has a diameter of 30mm. That's like a two bedroom
apartment versus the confines of a studio. There’s simply more room for
the erector assembly to roam.
ZOOM RANGE
The optical system, highlighted by a 4x zoom range, provides magnification
versatility. An ultra-friendly eye box with increased eye relief gets shooters
on target quickly and easily, because shooting opportunities can be mea-
sured in fractions of seconds.

ZOOM RANGE
With a 1-6x zoom range, the Strike Eagle maintains nearly all the fast
handling characteristics of a red dot on 1x, with the ability to bump up
to 6x zoom for easy engagements on targets out to 600 yards.
RETICLE
The AR-BDC is specifically calibrated to the 5.56 cartridge and subtends with
popular loads from 50-600 yards without requiring you to touch a turret. The
increasing width of the vertical drop lines also work for ranging targets when
distance is unknown and speed of engagement is crucial.
TURRET STYLE
Dump barrels, barricades and doorways have one thing in common—
they hate turrets. The low capped turrets on the Strike Eagle are
protected from even the harshest abuse, preventing accidental loss of
zero because of impact.
ILLUMINATION
The illuminated reticle features 11 intensity levels that are perfect for low
light shooting scenarios or picking what would ordinarily be a black reticle
apart from trees, brush or other obstacles.

TURRETS
Your bullet is going to drop a lot by the time it gets to 1,000 yards and
beyond, so you need turrets that can accurately dial to compensate for
that drop. The Viper PST Gen II has exposed tall turrets with plenty of
adjustment to precisely dial some serious long-range shots.
RETICLE
This EBR-2C reticle features a "windage tree" of dots in the lower two
quadrants. This attribute affords you the ability to engage in rapid follow-up
shots without the need to come off the gun and redial your turrets.
FIRST FOCAL PLANE
With all that reticle information, it helps to be able to use it on any
magnification within the Viper PST Gen II’s huge 5x magnification range.

WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION TO THE OUTDOORS?
My entire life revolves around the outdoors. Photography puts me in the field roughly 200-250 days a year. But that being said, I am a
photographer because it allows me to spend so much time outdoors. It is difficult to explain in words, but being outside just makes me
feel better.
WHEN YOU'RE NOT HUNTING OR SHOOTING PHOTOS, WHAT DO YOU GET EXCITED ABOUT?
I get excited about spending time with everyone that matters to me. I live a life on the road, and every now and again I need that root-
edness to keep me going.
IF YOU COULD SHARE YOUR JOURNEY WITH SOMEONE, WHO WOULD IT BE?
My dad. I keep trying to get him to officially retire so he can spend more time in the woods with me.
WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOU AND HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I grew up interested in film and photography, but didn’t do anything with that interest until 2011. I cold called as many hunting shows
as I could until one of them gave me an internship and that's what launched me into the industry. But as far as the inspiration for what I
am up to now, I had a very strong emotional reaction to the political threat to our public lands and felt I needed to make our voice heard
a little louder. What better way to do that than travel around in a full-size school bus? Plus, an added bonus is now owning a pretty great
mobile hunting camp.
WHAT SOUND OR NOISE DO YOU LOVE?
I grew up waterfowling a lot. So still to this day my favorite sound is whistling wings in the pre-dawn light. Flocks of mallards cutting and
banking and cupping into the field or water you are sitting in, can't be beat.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?
Success comes in many forms, but I think for me success is just having as many true adventures or experiences as possible. We only get
one go at this whole life thing, chase the story and everything else will fall into place.
WHAT HAVE YOU EATEN THAT HAS BEEN A PLEASANT SURPRISE?
I had a few bites of a coatimundi while on a hunt in Arizona. Although, Hank Shaw cooked it, so I don’t know if that is fair. But it tasted
a lot like pork.
IS THERE ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR YOU LOVE BUT ALSO HATE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
In my line of work, there is definitely a love-hate to it. I love all the travel, the places I get to go and the people I get to meet. It really is
a true dream job, but it is all those same things that I love, that make it a hard lifestyle. I’ve been living on the road for over four years
now, and by that I mean I have a couple storage units and and a school bus. I get tired of the constant packing and unpacking. There will
be a day when I have a little more solid place, but for now, I’m just going to enjoy the ride I’m on.

FFP VS. SFPWHICH IS BETTER FOR ME?
MOA VS. MRADWHICH IS BETTER FOR ME?
Again, the answer is both... Don’t you love us? Second Focal Plane (SFP) and First
Focal Plane (FFP) indicate where the reticle is placed inside the scope’s optical system.
Reticles in the First Focal Plane are mounted ahead of the major optical train—they
basically “meet up” with the image you’re viewing before everything is magnified, so
your image and reticle will grow and shrink together while maintaining the same scale
to one another regardless of magnification. Reticles in the SFP are mounted oppositely.
They “meet up” with the image you’re viewing after it’s already been magnified, so they
won’t appear to grow and shrink with the image as magnification changes, and are only
calibrated to be scaled to the image on one specified magnification level. While neither
is really better than the other, there are times when you may prefer one over the other.
Perhaps this will help:
Unfortunately, the best answer is both… Allow us to explain. MOA (Minutes of Angle) and MRAD
(Milliradians) are both angular units of measure—much like inches and centimeters are linear units
of measure. If you asked two people to build the exact same house, but gave one the directions in
inches and one in centimeters, they’d still build the same house, just measured differently. The same
goes when accounting for change in bullet impact or drop. MOA and MRAD are two ways of doing the
same thing. While we recommend sticking with whichever you’re most familiar, if you’re new to the
game, unfamiliar with the difference or looking to switch, perhaps this will help:
 Competitive long-range shooters
who engage targets at a wide variety
of distances, with minimal time to
dial the elevation turret to shoot off
center reticle, will prefer FFP. PRS
is a perfect example of this type of
competition.
 Because the measurements on FFP
reticles can be used on any mag-
nification, they often contain more
information or holdover points. Most
popularly, the “Christmas Tree”
style reticles are usually FFP.
 On max magnification, the reticle
will appear quite large, and on min-
imum magnification, it will appear
quite small. If you prefer the reti-
cle to always appear the same, FFP
might not be best for you.
 Most commonly associated with
“inches at 100 yards”, the angle
created by 1 MOA roughly equates
to 1 inch on a target at 100 yards.
 The correlation to linear units like
inches breaks down after 100 yards.
It’s not exact, so the margin of error
becomes much larger over distance.
 Units of MOA are given in fractions
like 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8—unless you are
used to these fractions, they can be
hard to add or subtract when making
adjustments on the fly.
 Not as easily correlated to linear
units like inches at 100 yards, but
that’s OK, 99% of the time you
should only be thinking in angular
terms of MOA or MRAD anyway.
 Units of MRAD are given in .1 in-
crements. For many, this is easier
to add or subtract when making
adjustments on the fly.
 Generally speaking, choose SFP if
you almost always shoot off center
reticle. Though the scale of the
image to reticle is only correct on
one specified magnification, the
center reticle is always correct, re-
gardless of magnification.
 If you use your reticle to “hold over”
occasionally (like in the case of a
BDC), simply make sure you are
on the correct magnification level
before shooting (it's almost always
maximum magnification).
 All things similar, SFP scopes will
be more affordable than the compa-
rable FFP option due to the relative-
ly easier manufacturing process.

PRECISION QR EXTENDED CANTILEVER MOUNT
This quick release cantilever mount is designed for mounting
telescopic sights with 30mm tubes onto a flattop style AR-15
rifle. The offset of this cantilever mount positions the scope in a
forward location, providing correct eye relief and head placement
when used on an AR-15.

I started when I was 12 after my mom had gone to take her concealed carry class. The guy who was teaching it had a daughter and
she was there helping him instruct the class. She started talking to my mom and asked if she had any kids who would be interested in
shooting competitively. I went and took a couple of lessons from her, went to my first competition and won my first high lady title. I am
inspired by all the other women in the sport, and I always want to do my best to be a great role model for other women/young girls who
are looking to get into the sport.
WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER, WHAT OCCUPATION DID YOU WANT TO HAVE?
I wanted to be a doctor/anesthesiologist/pharmacist/orthodontist. Then I realized I’m not the greatest at math and science, and I didn’t
want to be in school for half of my life!
WHAT'S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE EVER SEEN IN A COMPETITION?
I was shooting a match and there was “that one guy” on the squad. You know, the one who knows everything and is better than you could
ever be. So, I’m standing behind him and I hear him say, “Girls can’t shoot as fast as guys, because their brains can’t process what’s
happening as quickly.” Yeah, that really happened...oh and I ended up beating him.
Absolutely! I love social media, producing content and everything that goes along with it. However, sometimes it is tiring and I just want
a break. Also, sometimes the online trolls can get you down. But I wouldn’t trade my life for anything!

WE ASKED —
My name is Cheyenne Dalton, and I’m a competitive shooter. I started shooting at a very
young age, mostly plinking with my dad. Eventually, my plinking turned into shooting
Rimfire challenge, then USPSA and finally 3-Gun. I’ve won a couple of Ladies Limited
Rimfire World Championships along the way, as well as many state titles. One of my
main focuses is helping get young girls and their moms interested in the shooting
sports. I’ve had great mentors in the shooting industry and I try to do my best to help
the younger generation.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing bluegrass music with my band That Dalton Gang. We
travel all over the country playing festivals. I also enjoy hunting and fishing. Living on
a big farm in Missouri makes it possible to have lots of adventures close to home. My
main focus are whitetail deer and wild turkeys, but I will hunt coyotes if the chance
presents itself.

The outdoors and hunting have influenced every major decision I’ve ever made. From where I live to what I do for a living, everything is
centered around access to wild country and wildlife. I had unfettered access to the woods and swamps when I was a kid and it’s important
for my kids to have the same. There is much to be learned in school, but more to be learned in the woods.
WHAT SOUND OR NOISE DO YOU LOVE?
There are so many amazing sounds in nature that it’s hard to choose. But if there is one sound that never fails to give me chills and bring
a wide, teeth baring grin to my face, it’s the balls out scream of a big bull elk. Just thinking about it gives me chills.

I’ve had my two boys in the field since before they could walk. They’re still a little young for the serious backcountry hunts but it won’t

The importance of public lands in the future of hunting and other outdoor recreation. Hands down this is the single most important issue
facing hunters today and the issue that everyone should be paying attention to.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?
For me, bowhunting is about having a great experience. So as long as I’m making memories and getting in a few good stalks, I’d look at
that as a successful hunt.
When I first started hunting elk with a selfbow, I decided I was going straight up caveman when I killed my first. So when I finally put an
elk on the ground with a primitive bow, I cut a hunk of backstrap right there and ate it raw and unseasoned.
Where do I start?! When that first bugle of September rolls through the high country timber I can barely contain myself. I can’t help but
say “God I love elk!”. After a few frustrating days of trying to get within stickbow range though, my tune swaps to something less polite.
Elk are maddening and inescapably intoxicating at the same time. Shooting a stickbow is the same. I love shooting, love watching an
arrow fly. I hate that they don’t always fly exactly where I want them to, but I suppose I wouldn’t love it quite as much if they did. Afterall,
I think we all need a little humble pie. Elk and stickbows are both good at serving it!
WE ASKED —
My name is Clay Hayes. Telling folks what I do isn’t as easy as most. I can’t say I’m a
banker or store manager or any of the other titles by which most people define one an-
other. I do a lot of things, but they all revolve around one main activity - hunting. Being
surrounded by wild country and wildlife was always important to me. After earning a
degree in wildlife ecology, my wife and I moved to Idaho where I worked as a wildlife
biologist for 10 years. During much of that time I was building a YouTube channel,
writing books and teaching bow building classes on the side. A little over a year ago,
not without some trepidation, my wife and I decided to give that our full attention.
After seven years of college and ten years with the Idaho Fish & Game, we decided to
chase a dream. Now we’re splitting time between Idaho and Florida, teaching primitive
skills, writing books, making videos and hunting films, running a membership website,
and loving life!

My connection to the outdoors is the clarity it provides me and the disconnect from the noise of modern society.
WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST THING YOU'VE SEEN IN THE FIELD?
One of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen afield was while tracking a big non-typical mule deer that had 10” double droptines. After
following him for about a mile in the snow, his tracks came to a dead end underneath a giant pine tree. One set of tracks in and nothing
coming out.... A few minutes later I realized this old buck had set us up and actually walked backwards in his own tracks long enough
to jump over a steep bank where he had laid and watched us go by. It was truly incredible to see what this deer had done in the snow to
avoid a couple tailing predators.
My biggest inspirations growing up were Gordon Eastman & Marty Stoulfer. True pioneers of filming wildlife & hunting.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?
I wanted to be so many different things growing up, from a taxidermist to a game warden, but they all had one thing in common—
the outdoors.

If I could make people aware of one thing about hunting and the outdoors, it’s that hunting truly IS conservation. Without hunters and
hunter dollars, nobody would have the opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and wild places we all love.
I’ll be honest, I had my doubts about the McRib, but after giving it a try I’m totally impressed. Hahaha!! Kidding. I would say I was most
surprised by the taste of Grizzly Bear. Tasted like a good pork roast to me. Maybe it’s just because I was starving and in the middle of
nowhere, Alaska? The world may never know.
If there was any kind of love-hate relationship in what I do it’s the amount of time I see hunters bashing and arguing with other hunters.
We all need to realize that our differences will NEVER change the future of hunting. I think people assume when you have a TV show
or do this for a living you're trying to prove you're better than them. I’m not... I’m blessed to get to do what I do for a living but don’t
consider myself better than anyone else.

Since an early age, Jason has had a passion for wildlife and the outdoors. Born and
raised in Bozeman, Montana, access to these wide-open spaces has always been right
out his back door, literally. Through the years, Jason’s passion grew as he guided in
Montana and hunted all over North America. He realized he wanted to educate and
remind people of all the good hunters and conservationists do in a society that is quick-
ly becoming disconnected from its hunting past. In 2009, Jason launched a hunting
television show titled, Powderhorn Montana. Two years later he rebranded the show Into
High Country which has climbed to one of the top-rated shows. Jason’s dedication to
conservation sparked him to produce a series of award-winning documentaries starting
with #PROJECTELK in 2014 alongside the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. In 2015,
Jason partnered with the Mule Deer Foundation to work on #PROJECTMULEDEER. Most
recently in 2018 he released the Circle of Life presented by the Wild Sheep Foundation.

The Solo®
R/T monocular features an MRAD-based ranging reticle for accurate range estima-
tion and shot calls. The powerful optical system delivers bright images in a compact, light-
weight and easy-to-handle unit that is both waterproof and fogproof. With an integrated utility
clip, it attaches to webbing or other flat-edged surfaces for quick external access.
