TrustArc Webinar - Stay Ahead of US State Data Privacy Law Developments
OpenAIRE at EC INFSO-RTD Open Access co-ordination workshop, Brussels, May 2011.
1. Western European NOADs‘ experience
Awareness raising and how to reach
researchers and their organisations
Open Access Co-ordination workshop
2. Main Goals
Deliver “an electronic infrastructure and
supporting mechanisms for the identification,
deposition, access, and monitoring of FP7 and
ERC funded articles”
Additionally, offer “a special repository for articles
that can be stored neither in institutional nor in
subject-based/thematic repositories”.
All deposited articles will be visible and freely
accessible worldwide through a new portal to the
products of EU-funded research, built as part of
this project.

3. OpenAIRE helpdesk
Network of National Open Access Desks
(NOAD) in 27 European countries
Devided in 4 regions
A coordination team taking care of the
toolkits, the helpdesk, communication
planning, …

6. Helpdesk portal
Toolkits for authors, research institutions,
repository managers, NOADs
FAQ
“ask a question” ticketing system

8. Region west
Several countries very active in open
access since years
– Workflows in place: infiltrate
– Imbedded in existing associations /
institutions: make use of them
OpenAIRE Project Overview8
12. Primary actions of NOAD
⇒ focus on OpenAIRE compliancy
⇒ focus on contact with NCP and
repository managers
⇒ point to orphan repository
OpenAIRE Project Overview12
13. Repository managers
OpenAIRE guidelines define how to
include project information, extension of
driver guidelines
Primary group to target: DRIVER
compliant repositories
OpenAIRE Project Overview13
14. Risks
Sometimes hesitant to become
OpenAIRE compliant (first driver, now
openaire, what’s next?)
Many have small budgets for
development (even small adjustments
cost and should be scheduled)
OpenAIRE Project Overview14
15. Compliant repositories in region West
HAL
Archimer
UGent Biblio
Soon to be compliant:
– RIAN
OpenAIRE Project Overview15
16. National contact points NCP
All countries are in contact with NCP
Some NCP’s reluctant to work together
(the letter of EC was helpful)
Several NOADs have organized an info
day and have written publications in local
journals
OpenAIRE Project Overview16
17. Local contact points
Different approach big countries / small
countries.
– Big country like France: difficult to
approach universities individually
– Small country like Belgium: no problem to
visit all the universities individually
Local contact points like to contact their
researchers themselves
=> give them the information to include in
their FP7 information packages, eg letters,
leaflets, …
OpenAIRE Project Overview17
18. Support EC needed
Updated list of FP7 funded projects with
Clause 39 as well as contact details of
the project partners will be very valuable
for further project dissemination activities
18 Open Access Co-ordination workshop
19. Funding agencies
Liaise with local funding agencies
Interest is shown in the guidelines for their
own purposes
OpenAIRE Project Overview19
20. Other activities
In Austria and Belgium OpenAIRE was an
accelerator to revive resp. develop a
dedicated open access site:
www.openaire.at
www.openaire.be
OpenAIRE Project Overview20
France: Hal and couperin UK: sherpa / jisc / funding ag mandates Neth: surf, cream of science, … Ireland: RIAN … ..
NOAD = national open access desk
You want to get into the researcher’s workflow
An example of project info in the repo UGent
In Austria the NOAD’s repository is open for all FP7 participants in Austria, even if not in a university
Check: any others in region west?
Eg BE, FR, AU IR is preparing one Is NCP only the term for the national contact point or also for the contact point in the universities? Here, in BE, it is used in the second sense
What else to add?
Germany, Netherlands, UK, Ireland, France already had one
