Yn ystod y cyflwyniad byddwn ni’n siarad am rai o’r heriau a’r gwersi a ddysgwyd wrth brosesu casgliad unigryw o setiau ddata o 50 o wledydd, gweithio i ryddhau setiau data newydd, darganfod ffyrdd o gadw’r casgliad yn gyfoes, a chreu methodolegau i’w gwneud hi’n bosibl i roi’r data ar Wikidata ar ffurf safonedig a strwythuredig. Improving the structure and searchability of immovable cultural heritage information from around the world is what the Connected Open Heritage project has been trying to achieve. We have worked to include contextualized information on Wikipedia; new and historical images on Wikimedia Commons; and structured data on Wikidata. During the presentation we will talk about some of the challenges and lessons gathered while working with processing a world-unique collection of datasets from 50 countries, working to release new datasets, finding ways to keep it up-to-date, and creating the methodologies for the data to be added to Wikidata in a standardized and structured form.

The recent debate on fake news and critical thinking is invading the national and international scene. Strategies to counterfeit the phenomenon are issued everywhere: IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations) built a campaign around its infographic tool; at the same time, the Internet giants are beginning to change their attitude and position with respect to fake news as a result of public pressure – e.g. Facebook and the scandal of Cambridge Analytica. Libraries and librarians think they could play an important role, being their job about knowledge and information management, but does anyone else think along the same lines? An article published on Science with the explicit goal of starting a "science of fake news", advocated an interdisciplinary approach, yet hardly any reference was made to Library and Information studies. The same happened in the recent EU Public consultation on fake news and online disinformation - neither libraries nor schools were counted among the stakeholders. Someone may argue that news is outside the scope of the library mission; yet preserving documentation and helping people to find and evaluate information effectively definitely is: the actions undertaken by EBLIDA (European Bureau of Library, Information and Documentation) advocate for a role for libraries. Based on this scenario, the present paper will reflect on the concept of fake news in the light of library and information science – thus defining the field and its limits. Subsequently, it will analyse policy documents addressing the issue, to verify whether libraries and library studies are considered stakeholders by external observers. Method: documents on Fake News will be scanned looking for mentions of libraries on the websites of European Union, USA, Canada, Great Britain and Italy. An overall scan will also be carried out on the role of libraries in relation to fake news in research articles.

Presentation delivered as part of OpenFest Online Symposium at the University of Sheffield on 7th September 2023. Abstract: Google something, anything. What are the top ten results? Whether a scientific concept, political theory or research methodology, Wikipedia will almost certainly be near the top, if not the very first result. As a large-scale collaborative platform funded through charitable donations, with a mission to provide universal free access to knowledge as a public good, Wikipedia is one of the most popular websites in the world and a primary source of information on the web, especially for people outside academia. This presentation will explore the role of Wikipedia in the information ecosystem, where it occupies a unique role as a bridge between informal discussion and scholarly publication. We explore how it relates to the broader Wikimedia ecosystem, through structured data on Wikidata for instance, and openly licensed media on Wikimedia Commons. We consider the potential for universities to engage strategically with Wikimedia and the benefits of doing so, in the areas of information literacy and research impact, sharing openly licensed text and images to improve Wikipedia, for example, and linking Wikipedia citations to open access repositories. We will discuss our Wikimedia Champions project at the University of Leeds, which has recruited PGRs to examine Wikipedia in their subject area, identifying areas of need and making contributions. The project has been an opportunity to explore ways of sharing University research with a wider audience in an open and accessible way and thereby contribute to the global commons.

Daria Cybulska – Head of Programmes (Wikimedia UK) The Wikimedian in Residence programme in the UK is about five years old. In 2017 they conducted research into the kinds of impact that can be expected from setting up residencies and how to maximise that impact over the short and long term. This session will explore how to collaborate with open knowledge via Wikimedia projects, and what sort of impact is possible after running a Wikimedian in Residence project. The dimensions of impact are increased reach of collections, change of internal and external perspective on the museum, and scalability across the cultural sector.

Slides for the MTSR2018 presentation for the paper The Benefits of Linking Metadata for Internal and External users of an Audiovisual Archive by Victor de Boer, Tim de Bruyn, John Brooks and Jesse de Vos Like other heritage institutions, audiovisual archives adopt structured vocabularies for their metadata management. With Semantic Web and Linked Data now becoming more and more stable and commonplace technologies, organizations are looking now at linking these vocabularies to external sources, for example those of Wikidata, DBPedia or GeoNames. However, the benefits of such endeavors to the organizations are generally underexplored. In this paper, we present an in-depth case study into the benefits of linking the “Common Thesaurus for Audiovisual Archives” (or GTAA) and the general-purpose dataset Wikidata. We do this by identifying various use cases for user groups that are both internal as well as external to the organization. We describe the use cases and various proofs-of-concept prototypes that address these use cases.

Marius Flothuis weigerde zich in te schrijven bij de Kultuurkamer en werd prompt ontslagen door het Concertgebouworkest. Met zijn vrouw Leentje bood hij onderdak aan Joden en gaf hij clandestiene huisconcerten. Op 18 september 1943 werd hij opgepakt en vervolgens gevangengezet in kamp Vught, waar hij muziek schreef voor medegevangenen. Lex van Delden dook onder en werd via het studentenverzet lid van de Persoonsbewijzen Centrale. Ook hij gaf in de onderduik illegale huisconcerten. De Leo Smit Stichting maakt via de website Forbidden Music Regained muziek van vervolgde componisten toegankelijk voor een internationaal publiek. De website bevat meer dan 2.000 composities van bijna 40 vervolgde componisten. Door een koppeling met Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen komt dit – vaak onderbelichte – verhaal over verzet en vervolging tot leven.

Janneke Jorna and Michael Hoffmann dive into the collection plan of Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen. This plan aims to enrich the Netwerk's collection portal and to collect data for the new portal Oorlogslevens.nl. The collection plan currently focuses on the liberation of the Netherlands, in the context of the celebration of 75 years Freedom and on adding international collections. The first international participant of Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen, Arolsen Archives (before: International Tracing Service) supplies data on prisoners at the concentration camps in Amersfoort and Vught. This gives new insight into the lives of people during the Second World War.
