This document outlines the steps for a project to analyze different methods of communication. It instructs students to:
1) Design a questionnaire to gather information about how often, what for, advantages/disadvantages of a chosen communication method.
2) Analyze the questionnaire results, write a report on different aspects, and note any surprises or conclusions.
3) Participate in a debate to argue which communication method is the overall best, citing advantages and weaknesses of each.
4) Write a newspaper article summarizing the key points made, any good counterarguments, debate atmosphere, and an opinion on the overall winner.

The Questionnaire (part one)
What is the most effective way of communicating? Mobile? Messenger and other online
communication tools? Face to face dialogue? Old-fashioned letters? E-mail? Does it make
a difference if you’re talking to friends or in more formal situations?
Choose one method of communication which you believe is the most essential for society
today. Now design a questionnaire which you can give to colleagues to find out just how
much your communication tool is used.
You may want to find out about some of the following:
how often people use this; what for; its perceived advantages or
disadvantages; how easy it is to obtain, and use; its future
Hand out your questionnaire!
The Questionnaire (part two)
Look at the results from your questionnaire. Are the answers what you expected? Write a
report on your findings – each member of the group should write about a different
aspect covered in the questionnaire eg How People Use X, or The Future of X. You can
mention your expectations, comment on any surprises and draw any conclusions as well
as writing about the actual information.
2. The Debate
You are now going to face your colleagues in a Great Debate to decide which of the
means of communications you have all been looking at is the overall champion. Be
prepared! Be ready to talk about all the advantages of your means of communication,
and challenge your opponents by finding weaknesses with theirs!
Let the battle begin!
The Aftermath
So who won the Great Debate? Write an article to appear in the school newspaper to let
everyone know! You should mention the key points made by each group, any good
counter arguments, the atmosphere of the debate (friendly? hostile?) and who, in your
opinion, was the overall winner and why.
