Pre-Production
Olivia Day
Pre-production Assessment
Locations
In terms of the context of my advertisement production, most of my filming will take part
in a homely, familiar environment. The advert will not be set in a large, complex,
greenscreen setting much like high end perfume brands, such as Coco Chanel and Dior,
tend to film their commercials. The message behind my advertisement is that ‘love is all
around’ no matter where you are, therefore, the filming for my advertisement will be shot
in my own home/village. This is not because I deem it as more ideal and easier for me, it
just works out well in terms of the storyline and aesthetic I aim for. I live in the village
Riccall which is surrounded by large fields and has plenty
of serene old buildings so I have no worry that the location
will not be visually pleasing in terms of presenting my
makeup brand. I will choose to film on days where there is
bright, natural light so that I can get the best shots
possible for the videos. In terms of cost and travel, I will be
able to travel and
transport equipment
by foot so there
should be no funds
contributing to travel.
Equipment
The filming equipment I will be using from home for the filming and photography aspects
of my project is quite minimal. I personally own a Panasonic Lumix GX85 and will be
doing the entirety of my photography and filming from this camera as it works really well
in both fields. The quality of the image is very pristine and I can toggle with focus effects
if needed. If I am filming in any dark spaces I will be using a handheld bright handheld
camera light which gives a surprisingly similar result as a professional studio light would,
only on a smaller scale. In terms of shooting images of the products themselves (which
will be featured on the cosmetics website) I will book a day in the media studio at college.
At college, they have great resources such as a white backdrop and professional studio
lights. Theis equipment will grant me the opportunity to shoot the best, most professional
images I can for my website. My tutor informed me that it is best to book the studio a
week in advance, so, for that reason I will wait until closer to the time of the shoot to
book it. I expect shooting in the studio to take place towards the end of march.
Equipment List
Footage Misc.
Panasonic Lumix GX85 Camera SD Card
50mm Lens Extra Batteries
Tripod Handheld Light
Facilities
When I begin to edit the images and videos I had shot, I will be doing the majority of
work from college. At home I have a monthly subscription to Photoshop, however, I do not
have access to PremierPro. For this reason, I will be focusing my spare time at home
working on product designs which will be edited on my computer using photoshop. Once
I have shot the entirety of my makeup advertisement, I will spend as much time at college
editing the footage considering I do not have access to the video editing software
PremierPro.

Costume
I intend for the cast of my advert to be dressed appropriately according to the aesthetics of the
theme of the makeup set. Since I am creating a valentines day collection I am expecting to see some
pink and red tones perhaps paired with florals. I will be editing the footage to have the tones and
lighting of the advert to be fixed to have a romantic ambience and appearance such as a soft pink
haze. Therefore, I don’t want any opposing colours that may clash with this lighting adjustment
incorporated into the costumes. I also do not want the outfits to distract from the products I am
advertising.
Costume concepts:
Scene 1 & 6: Young
Girl and back of Young
Boy
Scene 2: Woman and
man date night outfit
Scene 3: Girl writing a
letter.
Scene 4: Couple watching TV Scene 5: Man baking in kitchen Scene 7: Close up makeup on models
Visual Planning
Storyboard and Shot List
Storyboard Explained
The next few slides show how I intend the basis/storyline of my advertisement to go. The first frame shows the
front door of a cottage-like house, my house, which then receives a knock from an unknown visitor. We then see a
young girl, around the age of 4, open the door from the side so that the visitor of the house still remains a mystery
to the viewer. The next frame she is shown surprised by what she has been presented with. We follow her upstairs,
revealing that she is speedily running up the stairs of the house whist getting a better view of her pretty dress.
Next, we see the young girl run towards what appears to be a makeup vanity and then we see her sit down on the
vanity stool, facing the mirror. Following this, the camera is placed directly in front of the girl so that the audience
views the girl from the perspective of the mirror. She begins to apply makeup from a makeup box that she was
gifted with. The 11th and 12th frame represents the way in which the camera will rotate around the young girl to
reveal a much older version of her, facing the mirror in the same position and wearing a full face of romantic
makeup. She then stands up, revealing that she is wearing a pretty and flattering white dress, and walks out of the
bedroom. We then see her walking down the same set of stairs as the camera transitions to her sat in the front seat
of a convertible car accompanied by what seems to be her date. She picks up a bottle of perfume and sprays
herself with it. The next frame reveals the car driving off down a country lane. The scene which follows shows a
teenage girl lying frontways on her bed, hopelessly writing what appears to be a love letter. The camera then follows
as she walks out of the room. The next scene then reveals that she was in fact preparing to post the letter through
a post box. The camera will then move past the post box and transitions past a TV to reveal a couple sitting on a
couch, looking comfy and laughing at what we can imagine is a funny film by their expressions. The next frame
shows a woman in the couple then picks up a tissue and dry a tear from her eye. The camera will then pan to the
tissue box to reveal that she is wearing a waterproof mascara, causing the mascara to not run down her face –
even in the happy moments. The following frame reveals a man baking in the kitchen. As he works up a sweat he
picks up the translucent powder which blends in well with the rest of the ingredients on display. He begins to apply
the translucent powder to mattify the shine of the sweat on his face to which he inhales some and sneezes. – this
will cause the camera to be submerged by a mist of powder. The final few frames will display a young, innocent
looking boy walking down the street from the back as the camera pans down from the sky. We then see him with an
excited smile on his face as he steps towards a door and knocks. T

Location 1 – My house.
Address: 32 Main Street, Riccall, YO19 6PX

Locations in order
Scene 1: Front porch/oak door which leads to reading room. (Young girl and boy)
Scene 2: Carpeted staircase leading to wooden floor hallway. (Young girl)
Scene 3: Bedroom 1. Tall ceiling, white walls and bright natural light. (Young girl and grown girl)
Scene 4: Hallway and staircase. (Grown girl)
Scene 5: Convertible car in the drive of my house. (Grown girl and date)
Scene 6: Country road where the car drives down. (Grown girl and date)

Scene 10: Kitchen. Bright lighting, white walls. (Baker in kitchen)
Scene 11: Street by my house. Sunny weather. (Young boy)
Scene 12: Front porch/oak door. (Young girl and boy)
In terms of a plan B, I believe that the location I have selected to film my project in is very reliable. However, as I
intend on the makeup advertisement having a homely, nostalgic vibe, I will use my other house situated in York to
film in which is slightly smaller hence why it is my fallback option
Address: 17 Galtres Avenue, Heworth, YO31 1JU
Building type: Semi-detached home.

Clearance and Permissions
As I will be filming with an under 18-year-old, I have ensured that I asked the
parent of the child for permission to allow footage of the child to be taken for my
project.
Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be avoided?
Getting hit by a car when filming on
the street.
Be aware of the roads. Always look
left and right before crossing and
ensure that the actor remains n the
pavement.
Tripping and falling during filming. Ensure that the filming environment
is clear of trip hazards such as
wires, kids toys, sharp objects etc.
Damage eyesight by looking into
bright light.
Turn the lights off when I’m not
filming and ensure that the camera
is not directly in front of the lighting
equipment.
Catching a cold when filming
outside.
Film on a day where the weather is
scheduled to be warm and keep
back-up jackets for when the
camera is turned off.

Pre-Production Planning

  • 3. Locations In terms of the context of my advertisement production, most of my filming will take part in a homely, familiar environment. The advert will not be set in a large, complex, greenscreen setting much like high end perfume brands, such as Coco Chanel and Dior, tend to film their commercials. The message behind my advertisement is that ‘love is all around’ no matter where you are, therefore, the filming for my advertisement will be shot in my own home/village. This is not because I deem it as more ideal and easier for me, it just works out well in terms of the storyline and aesthetic I aim for. I live in the village Riccall which is surrounded by large fields and has plenty of serene old buildings so I have no worry that the location will not be visually pleasing in terms of presenting my makeup brand. I will choose to film on days where there is bright, natural light so that I can get the best shots possible for the videos. In terms of cost and travel, I will be able to travel and transport equipment by foot so there should be no funds contributing to travel.
  • 4. Equipment The filming equipment I will be using from home for the filming and photography aspects of my project is quite minimal. I personally own a Panasonic Lumix GX85 and will be doing the entirety of my photography and filming from this camera as it works really well in both fields. The quality of the image is very pristine and I can toggle with focus effects if needed. If I am filming in any dark spaces I will be using a handheld bright handheld camera light which gives a surprisingly similar result as a professional studio light would, only on a smaller scale. In terms of shooting images of the products themselves (which will be featured on the cosmetics website) I will book a day in the media studio at college. At college, they have great resources such as a white backdrop and professional studio lights. Theis equipment will grant me the opportunity to shoot the best, most professional images I can for my website. My tutor informed me that it is best to book the studio a week in advance, so, for that reason I will wait until closer to the time of the shoot to book it. I expect shooting in the studio to take place towards the end of march.
  • 5. Equipment List Footage Misc. Panasonic Lumix GX85 Camera SD Card 50mm Lens Extra Batteries Tripod Handheld Light
  • 6. Facilities When I begin to edit the images and videos I had shot, I will be doing the majority of work from college. At home I have a monthly subscription to Photoshop, however, I do not have access to PremierPro. For this reason, I will be focusing my spare time at home working on product designs which will be edited on my computer using photoshop. Once I have shot the entirety of my makeup advertisement, I will spend as much time at college editing the footage considering I do not have access to the video editing software PremierPro.

  • 16. Costume I intend for the cast of my advert to be dressed appropriately according to the aesthetics of the theme of the makeup set. Since I am creating a valentines day collection I am expecting to see some pink and red tones perhaps paired with florals. I will be editing the footage to have the tones and lighting of the advert to be fixed to have a romantic ambience and appearance such as a soft pink haze. Therefore, I don’t want any opposing colours that may clash with this lighting adjustment incorporated into the costumes. I also do not want the outfits to distract from the products I am advertising. Costume concepts: Scene 1 & 6: Young Girl and back of Young Boy Scene 2: Woman and man date night outfit Scene 3: Girl writing a letter. Scene 4: Couple watching TV Scene 5: Man baking in kitchen Scene 7: Close up makeup on models
  • 19. Storyboard Explained The next few slides show how I intend the basis/storyline of my advertisement to go. The first frame shows the front door of a cottage-like house, my house, which then receives a knock from an unknown visitor. We then see a young girl, around the age of 4, open the door from the side so that the visitor of the house still remains a mystery to the viewer. The next frame she is shown surprised by what she has been presented with. We follow her upstairs, revealing that she is speedily running up the stairs of the house whist getting a better view of her pretty dress. Next, we see the young girl run towards what appears to be a makeup vanity and then we see her sit down on the vanity stool, facing the mirror. Following this, the camera is placed directly in front of the girl so that the audience views the girl from the perspective of the mirror. She begins to apply makeup from a makeup box that she was gifted with. The 11th and 12th frame represents the way in which the camera will rotate around the young girl to reveal a much older version of her, facing the mirror in the same position and wearing a full face of romantic makeup. She then stands up, revealing that she is wearing a pretty and flattering white dress, and walks out of the bedroom. We then see her walking down the same set of stairs as the camera transitions to her sat in the front seat of a convertible car accompanied by what seems to be her date. She picks up a bottle of perfume and sprays herself with it. The next frame reveals the car driving off down a country lane. The scene which follows shows a teenage girl lying frontways on her bed, hopelessly writing what appears to be a love letter. The camera then follows as she walks out of the room. The next scene then reveals that she was in fact preparing to post the letter through a post box. The camera will then move past the post box and transitions past a TV to reveal a couple sitting on a couch, looking comfy and laughing at what we can imagine is a funny film by their expressions. The next frame shows a woman in the couple then picks up a tissue and dry a tear from her eye. The camera will then pan to the tissue box to reveal that she is wearing a waterproof mascara, causing the mascara to not run down her face – even in the happy moments. The following frame reveals a man baking in the kitchen. As he works up a sweat he picks up the translucent powder which blends in well with the rest of the ingredients on display. He begins to apply the translucent powder to mattify the shine of the sweat on his face to which he inhales some and sneezes. – this will cause the camera to be submerged by a mist of powder. The final few frames will display a young, innocent looking boy walking down the street from the back as the camera pans down from the sky. We then see him with an excited smile on his face as he steps towards a door and knocks. T

  • 59. Location information Location 1 – My house. Address: 32 Main Street, Riccall, YO19 6PX Building type: Detached home I will be using 2/4 of the bedrooms, hallway and staircase, living room, reading room and kitchen to film in. Locations in order Scene 1: Front porch/oak door which leads to reading room. (Young girl and boy) Scene 2: Carpeted staircase leading to wooden floor hallway. (Young girl) Scene 3: Bedroom 1. Tall ceiling, white walls and bright natural light. (Young girl and grown girl) Scene 4: Hallway and staircase. (Grown girl) Scene 5: Convertible car in the drive of my house. (Grown girl and date) Scene 6: Country road where the car drives down. (Grown girl and date) Scene 7: Bedroom 2. Cozy vibes, dimmer lighting than bedroom 1. (Teen girl) Scene 8: Post box on street by my house. (Teen girl) Scene 9: Living room. Dim lighting. (Couple watching TV) Scene 10: Kitchen. Bright lighting, white walls. (Baker in kitchen) Scene 11: Street by my house. Sunny weather. (Young boy) Scene 12: Front porch/oak door. (Young girl and boy) In terms of a plan B, I believe that the location I have selected to film my project in is very reliable. • 64. Clearance and Permissions As I will be filming with an under 18-year-old, I have ensured that I asked the parent of the child for permission to allow footage of the child to be taken for my project.
  • 65. Health and Safety Potential Issue How will the issue be avoided? Getting hit by a car when filming on the street. Be aware of the roads. Always look left and right before crossing and ensure that the actor remains n the pavement. Tripping and falling during filming. Ensure that the filming environment is clear of trip hazards such as wires, kids toys, sharp objects etc. Damage eyesight by looking into bright light. Turn the lights off when I’m not filming and ensure that the camera is not directly in front of the lighting equipment. Catching a cold when filming outside. Film on a day where the weather is scheduled to be warm and keep back-up jackets for when the camera is turned off.
