2. WHAT IS MINE?
Firth initially stated that music videos can fit into 3 categories. These are
performance, narrative and conceptual. This means that the performance
videos are those where the band are seen playing or singing, the narrative is
where a story takes place and conceptual is when metaphors are used to
convey feelings within the video.
Personally I feel that my video encompasses two. These are performance and
conceptual. The reason being is because the singing in my video is from my
actress, playing Paloma. This means that the audience is meant to see my
actress as Paloma and give the impression that it‟s her actually singing.
However, it‟s conceptual because, according to Firth “Conceptual videos do
not tell a story in linear fashion, but rather create a mood, a feeling to be
evoked in the experience of viewing”. This video is open to interpretation
form the viewer as I don‟t want to tell the audience what to feel.
3. FEELING
The feeling I wanted to convey was one of sadness and loneliness. This wide-
shot shows how she is on her own and the facial expression throughout is one
of unhappiness
4. WHAT DO THE AUDIENCE FEEL?
I want the audience to feel a sense of
loneliness and sadness. By showing Paloma on
her own, she seems to be isolated and
vulnerable, however the audience could also
interpret this as her being strong and
independent. Paloma in many videos is shown
to be strong and independent and when you
look further afield, to Duffy, she also does in
her videos. This is done through framing her
at the front of her video, like in mine, and by
having close-ups of her face, something again
a feature in mine. This feeling of being close
to the artist satisfies the uses and gratifications
theory of relating with a valued other.
5. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
MUSIC/VISUALS/LYRICS
I use lip-synching, as seen on the video embedded below, to convey the
feelings in the song through visual images. I initially did this through analyzing
the lyrics and annotating them to create an image in my head of what the
writer of the song wants to convey to the audience. I had my own
interpretation of this so when storyboarding I also referred to her previous
videos, especially New York (NY) for inspiration. The inspiration was because
I wanted to replicate the feel felt in the single as well as adapt it to suit my
product. NY also uses lip syncing, as well as linking the lyrics to the video. I
do this in “I know a rich man who has everything he could wish for, but
children”. I simulate objects being thrown away as I felt this was Paloma
saying he‟s materialistic and I demonstrate this by getting rid of personal items
and throwing confetti – something associated with marriages and „eternal
happiness‟ as much as this one would be disputed! In NY, this is used when
she starts the chorus and a superimposed view of New York city appears
behind her. This chorus starts “And it was New York, New York…”
