Chris Atherton gives the general overview of GÉANT
Workshop title: National and European e-infrastructure cooparation for Open Science
Workshop overview:
This collaborative workshop comes in the context of coordinating EOSC related activities across large European infrastructures at European and national level. The workshop will offer an opportunity for cross-pollination on issues ranging from open scholarship to technical service provision, training, community engagement and support. OpenAIRE NOADs, EGI NGIs, GEANT NRENs and other national e-Infrastructure representatives will discuss gaps, synergies, coordination and service integration opportunities.

Network
The GÉANT network interconnects research, education and innovation communities worldwide,
with secure, high-capacity networks.
We design, plan, build and operate the large-scale, high-performance GÉANT network that connects
European NRENs to each other and the rest of the world for sharing, accessing and processing the high
data volumes generated by research and education communities and for testing innovative technologies
and concepts.

Interconnecting Europe’s
NRENs over a 500Gb highly-
resilient pan-European
backbone.
NRENs serve 50 million
users at 10,000 institutions
across Europe.
Network services: IP, Point-

Robustness
Over 1,000 terabytes of data are transferred every day via the GÉANT IP backbone.
Total reliability
100% average monthly access availability.
Flexibility
Services and infrastructure can be tailored to individual user requirements.
Capacity and rapid upscale
100Gbps (gigabits per second) services are now available across the core network, with a network
design that will support up to 8Tbps (terabits per second), ensuring the network remains ahead of user
demand and the data deluge.
Efficient operations
The dedicated GÉANT Operations Centre ensures 99% of cases are reported within 15 minutes of any
outage being detected, leading to rapid resolution.
Services
A wide range of services including IP and dedicated circuits, testbeds and virtualised resources,
authentication and roaming, monitoring and troubleshooting, advisory and support services.

Thanks for joining us
Introduce yourself
I’m going to provide an overview of the Géant organisation and some of the services that we offer.
Géant is a pan-European collaboration that’s been working for the last 20 years.
It exists to raise European research to the next level
Promoting scientific excellence through access and re-use of research data
We aim to making Europe the best connected region in the world
To allow European researchers to conduct world-class research in collaboration with the peers around the world
To do this we run a membership association of Europe’s National Research and education networks, co-ordinate and p
articipate in EC-funded projects, we operate a pan-European e-infrastructure, manage a portfolio of services for research and education, as well as organising and running community events and working groups.
We’re a membership organisation
Supporting over 40 National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) across Europe
Together we connect to 10,000 institutions and around 50 million academic users.
How this would work for you is that if you were based in Greece for example and you had a query about network connectivity, you would contact your local NREN, GRNET in this case, for assistance. If the problem existed between GRNET and Italy for example, that is where we would come in. We would act as the co-ordinating help desk on a pan-European level.
Our income is derived from membership fees and subscriptions, from the NRENs and commercial partners
EC also contribute towards the cost share with the NRENs
We have an interesting governance structure in that we’re OWNED by the NREN members and they are our CUSTOMERS.
The organisation has been running for around 20 years.
As an organisation we’re governed by the General Assembly which consists of all the European NRENs
A subset of the NRENs are voted to form the Géant board. They manage and administer the organisation
We then have various committees, made up of the board and the CEO which provide oversight on various activities
Day to day operations are managed by the Géant executive, led by the CEO.
Current Interim CEO: Erick Huizer
Current Chair of the board is Christian Grimm from the German NREN: DFN
GÉANT is a trusted European Commission (EC) partner for many projects.
Because we’ve been so successful we’ve taken the Géant model and replicated this in other parts of the world.
We operate the European e-infrastructure Géant network
We run project for Authentication and Authorisation for research collaboration. We work with other e-infrastructures to address the trust and identity issues that we collectively share.
Because we’ve been so successful in the way we’ve run the Géant project. we’ve taken the Géant model and replicated this in other parts of the world.
Such as Africa Connect 2, CAREN, EaP Connect and EUMED Connect 3,TANDEM and Magic
We operate an 500 Gb pan European optical network
Currently around 3.9 Petabytes of data pass across the network per day
We connect not just the 40 plus European NRENs but peer internationally with partner organisations in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
We’ve recently launched an interactive map of our global network at map.geant.org. Please have a look if you have a moment.
The network is a separate ultra-high-speed internet, only for research & education
Has an average monthly access availability of 100%
Running a dedicated 24x7 operations centre to deal with any outage that is detected
The network is designed to stay ahead of user demand, always ensuring uptime and reliability.
Our largest user is CERN, a third of all daily traffic on our network comes from this organisation.
GÉANT manages and develops a portfolio of specialist services members need to support researchers, educators and innovators – at national, European and international levels.
We cover:
Network services
Trust and identity
Storage and clouds
Real-time communications
And Professional services
We have a lot of experience with trust, identity and Security. A heritage going back to 2001
Eduroam - probably the most famous service we provide. Global wifi roaming for the research and academic community, with over 250 million authentications per month
eduGAIN - federation of federated identity providers, allows for example single-sign-on between universities and projects, connects over 50 million users to over 1700 service providers globally.
AARC – Géant leads the Authentication and Authorisation for Research Collaboration project, group developing a framework for AAI across e-infrastructures, research collaborations, libraries and federations.
REFEDS – We provide secretariat support for the Research and education federation group, represents the requirements of research and education in access and identity management.
TF-CSIRT – Computer security incident response teams task force, co-ordinating training, services and knowledge-exchange for security teams world wide.
Christos Kanellopoulos from our project development team who specialises in trust and Identity is here in the audience. If you have any queries please feel free to catch up either of us.
Géant has developed a novel approach to cloud services by providing NRENs with the ability to offer services from a multitude of providers to their members. These are both commercial and NREN developed cloud infrastructures.
These would be accessible via your local NREN.
Community is really important to us. To grow the various communities that we interact with we host and run a number of events and workshops. This has also lead to developments of innovative technologies and services which benefit everyone in those communities.
We build the communities through conferences, special interest groups and task forces, Research programs and the development of bespoke services. For more information on the conferences that we’re currently organising, please see our website – just search for Géant events using your preferred search engine.
GÉANT actively engages with a broad range of user communities
We engage with Small, large and very large user organisations.
Engagement is determined not by size, but if your project crosses European boarders.
We only deal with projects or organisations that are international in nature, both across Europe and world wide.
For projects or user communities located in only one country, we help them get in touch with their local NREN.
Examples of Scientific user groups we liaise with:
CERN and high energy physics community
ESA by providing a dedicated academic connection to the Copernicus datasets for EO
EUMETSAT
SKA and others for radio astronomy
We provide services for other e-infrastructures such as EGI, PRACE and CLARIN
We work with future internet projects
And the life sciences scientific community
Amongst others
Why we’re here today: To listen to you, to find out how we can help you.
Just before I finish, I’d like to mention that Géant is committed to implement the European Open Science Cloud.
Géant is working to support the European Open Science cloud initiative through collaboration in EOSC Pilot, e-infracentral and from January, the EOSC Hub project.
Hopefully this gives you an idea of what we do and who we support.
We’re here to listen to your requirements and to explore what we can do to help you, to better engage with your community.
