- Over 2.2 million researchers have already registered for an ORCID iD Nearly 500 organizations are ORCID members – around two thirds of which are universities and other research institutions; the remainder are associations, funders, publishers, and repositories. They have launched about 250 integrations with ORCID so far, with many more in the pipeline. These integrations are embedded in the workflows and systems that researchers already use – grant applications, manuscript submissions, profile and research information systems, and more.
- Notes for presenter: From the start ORCID was established to be non-profit, non-proprietary and community-driven. Our core principles establish that we be open to all who want to use a common person identifier for research activities and outcomes - regardless of country, discipline, or industry ORCID is independently governed by a Board of Directors – representatives from member organizations (majority not-for-profit) plus a researcher representative ORCID is supported by membership dues from our 500 or so (as of May 2016) member organizations. ORCID iDs are and always will be free for researchers Our members are integrating ORCID into their systems (around 250 so far). Non-member organizations can also build ORCID iDs into their systems using our public API, but with more limited functionality
- Although organizations can benefit most from ORCID as members, they can also use the public API to collect ORCID iDs in a validated way and read publicly available information, as well as displaying ORCID iDs on their website and elsewhere. Benefit 10 was highlighted by respondents to our recent community survey as the number one reason why they personally registered for an ORCID iD
- This infographic shows at a high level how ORCID iDs enable interoperability between different systems, helping us make our mantra of ‘Enter once, re-use often’ a reality for researchers and their organizations. In addition, and very importantly, by validating your researchers’ ORCID iDs when they interact with your systems, you can assert the connection between them and your organization, building trust in scholarly communications overall. For funders, this means asserting the connection between awardees and their grants; for publishers, between authors and their works; and for employers, between researchers and their affiliation with a university or other institution.
- ORCID is encouraging our members to build integrations that provide the best possible support for your researchers, your organization, and the wider research community. For employers such as universities, this means: Collecting validated ORCID iDs for your employees, members, affiliates, and students to ensure associations with the preferred name (and organziation identifier) of your institution and to enable cross-system tracking and analysis Displaying iDs on your website and in researcher profiles to signal to your employees and affiliates that your information systems are plumbed to support their use of ORCID Connecting information about affiliation - and, if applicable, contributions - to an individual’s ORCID record, making it easy for them to share this trusted information with other systems and profiles they use Synchronizing with your systems to improve reporting accuracy and speed
- ORCID is encouraging our members to build integrations that provide the best possible support for your researchers, your organization, and the wider research community. For publishers, this means: Collecting validated ORCID iDs for individuals to ensure that they are correctly connected with their contributions, such as dissertations, publications, artworks, or review activities Displaying iDs in metadata and with publications to signal to grantees the value of using ORCID iDs Connecting these ORCID-workID assertions to authors’ ORCID records, making it easy for researchers to share this trusted information with other systems and profiles they use Synchronizing with your own systems to save your users time and improve information flow with other systems
- ORCID is encouraging our members to build integrations that provide the best possible support for your researchers, your organization, and the wider research community. For funders this means: Collecting validated ORCID iDs for awardees at the time of grant application or award to create trusted connections Displaying iDs in your data systems and on your website to signal to grantees the value of using ORCID iDs Connecting these ORCID-grantID-funderID assertions to grantee ORCID records, making it easy for researchers to share this trusted information with other systems and profiles they use Synchronizing information to and from your systems and ORCID to improve the post-award reporting experience and support better analysis and evaluation
