Speaker Notes:
Course Introduction
Key Messages:
Proliferation of consumer devices and digital generation entering work-force lead to higher user expectations of technology at work.
Ubiquitous connectivity and fast paced nature of the modern business erodes the line between people’s personal and professional life.
As a result, people’s individual workstyles are increasingly important part of how things get done.
Users increasingly have final say in what technology they use to get job done – this is the trend called Consumerization of IT.
We, Microsoft, believe consumerization of IT is great as it unleashes people’s productivity and passion and has the opportunity to drive innovation and competitive advantage.
We believe there is a power in saying “Yes” to users and their technology requests, and embracing consumerization of IT in a responsible way.
Talk Track:
Device proliferation, with users having broad access to consumer devices at home, leads to higher user expectations of technology at work.
According to the recent IDC study, the affluent user around the world ($98K annual income) owns on average 4.8 devices, while in the US, there are 6.6 devices owned by the affluent user. Overall, there are estimated 700M personal computing devices WW in 2010, this expected to double by 2014 to 1.47B personal computing devices.
Digital generation entering the work place raises these expectations to a whole new level – a generation that has grown up completely fluent in the language of digital technology—from texting, instant messaging, and blogs to Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter—has dramatically different expectations about the tools they should be able to use at work.
These tech savvy users are also increasingly mobile, and operate in a fast paced environment. The dynamic environment, along with ubiquitous connectivity erodes the lines between people’s life and work.
As the line between people’s life and work gets blurred, people’s personalities and individual workstyles have an increasing impact on how they get their work done and what technology they prefer to use.
As a result, users increasingly want a say in what technology they use to get job done – this is the trend called Consumerization of IT.
Examples of Consumerization of IT: BYOD (= Bring Your Own Device, users bring and use their own PC/ slate/ phone) to work; use social networking at work and for work.)
A recent Forrester Research study showed that 35 percent of workers in the United States either buy their own smartphone for work, or use unsanctioned Web sites, or download unapproved applications on a work computer. Why? 24% of do-it-yourselfers say the technology is better than what their job provides. 36% say they need it, and their employer won’t provide an alternative. And nearly 40 percent say they use it at home and, well, they want it at work, too.
Consumerization of IT is great, as it unleashes people’s productivity and passion, innovation and competitive advantage.
We, Microsoft, believe there is a power in saying “Yes” to users and their technology requests in a responsible way, and our goal at Microsoft is to partner with you in IT to enable you to embrace these trends but also ensure the environment remains secure and well managed.
But embracing Consumerization of IT is not easy for companies, and it represents some key challenges (Segway to the next slide).
Thru my role I am a mobile work
Being an island country like Ireland, you would all understand the limitations / challangings of being an island nation

It’s where you go to discover experts, share knowledge and uncover connections to information and people. It’s a hub for developers to build and deploy modern apps and for designers to build eye-catching websites. And because its built in the cloud IT Pros can manage cost, and meet the demands of compliance to manage risk. Finally, SharePoint 2013 has been built to handle almost anything our customers can throw at it so IT Pros can spend more time managing information, delivering innovation and manage their time effectively.

This slide, and the following 6 slides are just overview slides. They are to set the context for what can be offered by Partners to SMB’s without going into detail on each services (IaaS, PaaS, Azure virtual machine’s, Azure Backup, Azure Web Sites, Azure AD). Don’t teach these technologies here. Detailed sections are coming up for each. Just overview the services to show the big picture of SMB’s using Azure consumption based services.
For this slide, briefly introduce Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). IaaS will be covered in Module 2, and applications on virtual machines will be covered in Module 4.
From an IaaS perspective, Microsoft Azure is a cost-effective alternative to offload hardware and software resources and demands from on-premises and into the cloud to provide customers more IT agility and cost-effective solutions to better manage their IT resource mix
Speaker Notes
2-3 minutes
Briefly introduce Platform as a Service (PaaS). PaaS will be covered in Module 4.
With PaaS, Microsoft Azure offers your customers a solution to offload their platform components including virtualization, servers, storage, networking, runtime, middleware, and OS to again provide a cost-effective agile way to manage their IT budget and resources

Microsoft Azure is a cloud platform that enables you to quickly build, deploy, and manage solutions across a global network of Microsoft-managed datacenters.
It is open and flexible—you can build applications using any language, tool, or framework.
Azure also offers the unique ability to integrate public cloud solutions with the existing IT environment. This offers a real advantage over other platforms, which take an “all or none” strategy.
With Azure, you can count on your applications and services, with a 99.95% monthly SLA, and automatic OS and service patching.
Azure offers a wide range of usage-based services, including applications, compute, storage, and network services.
Microsoft will regularly introduce new services to Azure.
You can use this to explain all the Azure building blocks – the compute services at the top and then the other blocks of services – data, networking, Apps…. OR you can go with the next set of slides… YOUR CHOICE…

Azure in Open licensing enables a lot of new services for partners to resell to customers. We will focus on a couple of key scenarios that make sense for SMB customers and simplify the opportunity for our VARs.
Here are three great examples of how to offer profitable new services built on Microsoft Azure.
Offer data backup in the cloud – this is our lead scenario
With Azure, you can provide easy, scalable data backup in the cloud for a range of applications, such as file servers, SharePoint, SQL Server, and Exchange. For improved data protection, you can offer encrypted backups and know that data is backed up on Azure’s global geo-redundant datacenters. You also have the flexibility to quickly and easily provision more storage for your customers as needed.
Deploy applications within virtual machines
Azure also opens up the opportunity to help customers deploy applications in the cloud by hosting them in Azure virtual machines. Windows Server 2003 End of Life is on July15th, 2015. This presents a huge opportunity to drive the IaaS scenarios. With Azure, applications can be deployed quickly by moving them into an Azure virtual machine. There are no up front infrastructure costs, you reduce IT management, and the application has scale up or down as needed.
Host websites on Azure – this is more of a niche scenario for partners that host websites
Microsoft Azure also offers a perfect platform for leveraging the cloud to deploy scalable websites. Hosting a website on Azure means that infrastructure management is covered, and you and your customers get the peace of mind from leveraging Microsoft’s global network of managed datacenters.
Speaker Notes
2 minutes
Briefly introduce Azure Virtual Machines. Don’t go into to too much depth here since Azure virtual machines will be covered in detail in Module 2. Explain how Azure IaaS is an on-demand infrastructure and eliminates the need to buy hardware to run infrastructure. Connectivity between on-premises infrastructure and Azure virtual machine’s will be covered in module 3. Also, mention how easy it is to spin up a test or development environment in Azure.
Speaker Notes

This slide is to simply include cloud-based backup as a solution that can be bundled with an Azure subscription. Since Azure Backup is covered in detail later in this module, simply introduce it at the same overview level you introduced IaaS an PaaS.
Microsoft Azure Backup
Once you are in a data protection conversation with your customer, another compelling option is a cloud-based backup solution. In addition to disaster recovery, which provides business continuity and the fastest recovery times, data backup provides a simple way to maintain a copy of your data and applications. As customers struggle to keep up with growing data storage demands, backing up that data can also be costly and time consuming, requiring additional capital investment in backup systems and media. A lot of customers feel like they constantly have to buy more storage capacity to keep up with demand.
Now, with Microsoft Azure Backup, you have a great way to capitalize on the cloud services opportunity by providing scalable, pay-as-you-go backup in the cloud. With Microsoft Azure you can quickly and easily provision more storage for your customers as needed.
A range of workloads: Microsoft Azure is suitable for backing up a range of customer workloads, including file servers, SharePoint Server, SQL Server, Exchange, and many others.
Data protection: With Microsoft Azure Backup, you can offer customers greater peace of mind by leveraging the same cloud platform relied upon by some of the world’s largest financial institutions with encrypted backups and global, geo-redundant datacenters.
No hardware and backup media costs: By leveraging Microsoft Azure infrastructure, you can avoid capital expense for hardware and the cost of backup media.
Consistent management tools: Microsoft Azure Backup offers a uniquely consistent platform for managing your customers’ backups, whether on-premises or in the cloud. It integrates with the in-box backup program in Microsoft Windows Server (or System Center Data Protection Manager); it is driven by familiar PowerShell scripting language, and it is fully integrated with the Azure Management Portal for sign-up, billing, and web-based management.
With Microsoft Azure Backup, you can offer customers flexible data recovery and other powerful backup features. For example, you can provide convenient data recovery features like point-in-time recovery and file-level recovery to recover only what your customer needs. You can also customize your solutions to meet customers’ specific needs with flexible data retention policies, data compression, and data transfer throttling. You can also minimize network bandwidth use by sending only incremental backups.
Speaker Notes

Briefly introduce that Azure is a great platform for hosting websites, both intranet and external facing. SMB’s can take advantage of these services to save on hosting and infrastructure cost of hosting webs. Again, just overview at this point.
Host Websites in the Cloud with Microsoft Azure
Many small and midsize customers develop and host their websites in-house and reach a point where they “outgrow” this approach, experiencing bandwidth and availability issues, and facing the high costs of purchasing new hardware to meet increased demand. Scalability can especially be an issue for businesses that face spikes in usage for specific events, such as online sales.
With Microsoft Azure, there is a great opportunity to build your business helping customers move their websites to the cloud.
Microsoft Azure provides an open and flexible cloud platform that enables you to quickly build, deploy, and manage websites on a global network of Microsoft-managed data centers.
With websites hosted on Microsoft Azure, you can participate in a high-margin opportunity by leveraging a fully-managed cloud infrastructure that can scale as needed to support the largest peak loads. And you can manage your customers’ websites using the same familiar tools across on-premises and cloud environments.
Speaker Notes

One of the best features for Azure Web Sites is that it is a part of Microsoft Azure. This is what sets Azure Web Sites apart from traditional web site hosting as well as what sets it apart from other Cloud PaaS providers.
Developers building and deploying on top of Azure Web Sites have access to and can integrate with other Azure Services such as Azure Active Directory, Blob Storage, Cloud Services, Service Bus and SQL Database.
Speaker Notes:
Explain that this course covers topics related to how a partner can assist small and medium size businesses in transacting, implementing, and supporting Microsoft Azure consumption based services.
This is especially relevant because Azure is available for partners to resell in Open Volume Licensing on August 1st.
