2. Introduction
Tender gums. Bleeding gums. Swollen and red gums. These are all common issues that
people experience at some point in their life due to periodontal disease (also known as gum
disease). Over 64 million adults have some stage of gum disease, and a significant portion of
them don’t even realize it.
When gum disease is left untreated, it progresses and the infection spreads. The end result
is tooth decay, bad breath, pain when chewing and in some cases tooth loss.
The bright side is that gum disease is absolutely avoidable! By taking the proper steps, you
can have healthy gums free of disease and infection. We’ll break down some of the most
important aspects of maintaining healthy gums so that you can have a beautiful smile that
you’re proud of!
3. You should brush your teeth a minimum of twice a day. Brushing eliminates plaque before it
has the opportunity to build up and get into the gums.
Keep in mind that the way you brush your teeth is important too.
Brush Regularly
Don’t brush too hard
Use a soft bristle toothbrush
Consider using an electric toothbrush for more effectiveness
Brush at a 45-degree angle
Brush for around 2 minutes each time
4. The first sign many patients get that they have gum disease is after they floss for the first
time in a long period and they experience bleeding gums. Flossing at least once per day
allows you to dislodge any food particles stuck between tooth and eliminate plaque.
Flossing isn’t only good for your teeth, but your heart as well. Studies show that people who
floss regularly have a lower risk of developing heart disease.
Choose a brand and type of floss that you enjoy and will use. There are several options.
Floss Daily
Floss tape/ribbon
Traditional floss
Floss picks
5. You may think that mouthwash just freshens your breath, but its primary use is killing
bacteria that lives inside your mouth.
There are several brands of mouthwash available, and it’s best to consult with your dentist to
decide what the best option is for you. Some popular features of mouthwash are:
Use Mouthwash
Fluoride added: Good if you are not getting enough fluoride
Anti-Plaque/Gingivitis: Good for patients who already have some gum disease
Sensitivity: Great for patients who have sensitive gums or teeth
Alcohol free: Good for children or people with sensitive mouths
6. The foods you eat have a large impact on your gum health. Avoid junk food and foods that
are high in sugar. Eat more natural, whole foods that are packed with vitamins and nutrients
like.
Some good choices for gum healthy foods are:
Watch Your Diet
Apples
Dairy such as milk, cheese and yogurt
Leafy greens such as spinach, kale and romaine lettuce
Raw onion
7. If you’re not visiting the dentist for routine checkups and cleaning, you’re at an increased risk
of developing gum disease. Dentists offer professional cleaning to treat the areas regular
brushing and flossing can’t.
The dentist will also be able to spot potential issues before they fully develop and become
problematic.
It’s recommended that you visit the dentist once every six months. This can vary depending
on your oral health.
