Benefits of VET courses
A vocational course will equip students with
relevant knowledge and skills valued by
employers and will help make students more
job ready.
It will also help students gain:
■ a nationally recognised award under the
Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
– a valuable qualification recognised by
industry and other training providers
■ more confidence and independence
■ insight into the type of career they might
like, helping them make better career
decisions
■ experience in an adult learning
environment.
Students entering Years 11 and 12 can undertake
vocational education and training (VET) courses
that count towards their units of study and provide
nationally recognised qualifications as part of their HSC.
A large range of courses are available for local high school students to study. These
courses are delivered at local secondary schools or TAFE campuses. When VET courses
in Year 11 and 12 are taught by TAFE teachers at TAFE campuses (or sometimes at
schools) they are called TAFE-delivered VET courses – or TVET courses.
Chloe Champan
After living in Japan for 12 months as a
ROTARY exchange student, Chloe Champan
developed an interest in the travel industry and
the co-ordination of events. So when choosing
her HSC subjects TAFE's TVET course - Travel,
Tourism and Events was an obvious choice.

Did you know?
Completing a TVET qualification at North
Coast TAFE as part of a student’s HSC can
ensure they receive guaranteed placement* in
selected North Coast TAFE courses after they
finish school. It’s a great kick-start and a chance
to continue studies on a career path of interest.
*Eligibility and course availability conditions apply.
What are the course costs for
TAFE-delivered courses?
TAFE provides TVET courses to all schools and school
systems on a fee-for-service basis. The Department of
Education and Communities does not pass on these
fees to government school students.
However, non-government schools may require their
students to pay additional fees to contribute to the
cost of TAFE-delivered courses.

How to apply
Applying for a TVET course is easy.
Follow these simple steps to get started:

Students and parents should read the 2017 TVET guide for high school
students. While reading, it's a good idea to think about what the student
is interested in and careers they may like to start learning about. It’s
important that the right TVET courses are chosen and the student gets
the most out of their TVET experience.
Students, parents and Careers Advisors should
discuss potential options, pathways and a
selection of courses that meet the student's
needs and goals.
Fill in the 2017 Expression of Interest (EOI) form.
The EOI form can be downloaded from
northcoasttafe.edu.au or provided by the school's
VET Coordinator or Careers Advisor.
The EOI form should be signed by the student, parent or
guardian and the school principal. TVET course codes must be
included on the EOI form. They are found on the local course
insert available from the VET Coordinator or Careers Advisor.
Submit the 2017 TVET Expression of Interest
form to the school’s Careers Advisor before the
closing date of 16 September 2016.

Course types
Did you know that you can study some TVET courses online?
Studying TVET online is a new and flexible alternative to
attending a TAFE campus. It allows you to study around other
HSC commitments and helps reduce travel time and costs.
While TVET online students are well-supported, you will need
to be a self-directed learner with good time management and
independent study skills. Please check in the locations section if
your course is offered online.
Board Developed courses are developed
by the Board of Studies. These 240 hour
courses can be examinable and can count
towards the calculation of a student’s ATAR.
Board Endorsed courses are endorsed by
the Board of Studies but are not examinable
and therefore do not contribute to the
ATAR.
Students may be able to undertake additional
units of study in some courses to gain
additional qualifications. Students must be
enrolled in, or have completed, the 240 hour
course before enrolling in an extension or
specialisation course. Students who successfully
complete an extension or specialisation course
will receive additional vocational qualifications.
Extension and specialisation courses
are available for study in:
■ Animal Studies
■ Business Services
■ Construction
■ Financial Services
■ Hospitality
■ Information and Digital Technology
■ Metal and Engineering
■ Primary Industries
■ Retail Services
Extension courses can be available as one unit
(60 hour), two unit (120 hour), three unit (180 hour)
or four unit (240 hour) courses. Board Developed
extension courses do not contribute to the
calculation of an ATAR and there is no exam.
VET courses count towards HSC unit credit. The Board of Studies
Teaching Education Standards NSW (BOSTES) classifies them
as either Board Developed courses or Board Endorsed courses.

Advanced options
One year and two year TVET courses
Where a course is one year or two years,
students may study a course for:
■ one year only in Year 11 or
■ one year only in Year 12 or
■ two years over Years 11 and 12.
Fast Track
Fast Track courses are two-year study
programs that maximise credit transfer into
further vocational qualifications. Students can
complete four units of study in Year 11 and
then complete additional units of extension
study in their HSC year.
Summer/Winter School
Summer/Winter School enables students
to complete 120 hours of study in their TVET
course over the school holidays. This allows
students to meet the BOSTES requirements
for two units preliminary or HSC study.

Monique Orme
Monique Orme is currently studying fulltime at Griffith University
on the Gold Coast undertaking a dual qualification of a Bachelor of
Exercise Science and a Masters of Physiotherapy. During Monique's
Year 11 and 12 studies she completed a school-based traineeship with
North Coast TAFE studying a Certificate III in Sport and Recreation.
Monique was employed with Timeout Adventures in Coffs Harbour,
which gave her great hands on experience within the industry and
assisted her entry into higher education.

Work placement
Students may have work placement as a
mandatory requirement. All Board Developed
courses have compulsory work placement of 35
hours for each two units of study.
Students with special needs
Students with special needs are encouraged to
enrol in and complete VET courses delivered at
school or TAFE.
Parents, teachers and students should
carefully consider:
■ student career choices
■ the recommendation of the School Learning
Support Team
■ the likelihood of the student achieving all or
some of the competencies or elements of
competency for the course
■ the mandatory work placement requirements
for the course
■ the student’s ability to complete the required
hours of attendance.
Students with disabilities or learning difficulties
are required to submit additional information
that will enable support requirements to be
determined prior to undertaking the course.
Information about this is available from local
high schools.
Recognition of Prior Learning, advanced
standing and credit transfer
Students can apply for Recognition of Prior
Learning (RPL), including credits for relevant
subjects completed with another registered
training organisation.
Speak to the Course Coordinator if it appears
that a student may be able to claim recognition
or credit for specific skills in a course.
Advanced standing refers to units of
competence that a student will receive credit
for in subsequent qualifications. All vocational
education qualifications or training completed
as part of a student's HSC are recognised by
TAFE and other VET providers. Students are not
required to repeat training completed at school.

Jack Gaynor completed a school-based
traineeship in Human Services while studying his
HSC. Jack worked part-time at Legacy Nursing
Home Coffs Harbour and also volunteered as a First
Aider with St Johns Ambulance. Jack is currently
working at the Coffs Harbour Health Campus as
an assistant in Nursing while studying a Bachelor
of Nursing at the University of Wollongong. Jack
was the top scoring Human Services student for his
campus and has been a recipient of a $30,000 rural
and remote scholarship to attend his studies from
2016 onwards.

School-based apprenticeships and
traineeships are more than just part-time
jobs – they’re a great way to set a student
up for the career they want while they are
completing their HSC.
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships
are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school
students in NSW. They allow students to commence
an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while
at school.
A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship
combines paid work and training.
What can students achieve if they
undertake a school-based apprenticeship
or traineeship?
■ Higher School Certificate – in many cases
achieving an ATAR
■ a nationally recognised vocational qualification –
usually at Certificate II or III level
■ a Certificate of Proficiency issued by State
Training Services for the successful completion
of a traineeship or apprenticeship
■ paid part-time work
■ valuable industry experience
■ a head start to a student's career.
What are the main features of school-based
apprenticeships and traineeships?
School-based apprentices work part-time and
undertake the first stage of their apprenticeship
training before the end of the HSC year. School-
based apprentices commence employment as a
full-time apprentice after their HSC, providing they
have successfully completed both their on-the-job
and off-the-job training program during their senior
high school years.
School-based trainees work part-time and complete
their traineeships by the end of their HSC year.

How will a school-based apprenticeship/
traineeship fit in with the HSC?
All school-based apprentices must study HSC
VET courses that match the training provided
to first year full-time apprentices. These HSC
VET courses will generally contribute a minimum
of four units of HSC credit out of the 22 units
required for the HSC. The formal training
undertaken by a school-based trainee will also
contribute a minimum of four units of credit
required for the HSC.
Additional HSC unit credits may be applicable for
both school-based apprenticeship and school-
based traineeship courses depending on the
qualification.
School-based apprentices and trainees may also
elect to undertake the industry-based learning
Board Endorsed course that can contribute up to
four additional units of HSC credit. Assessment of
these units will be based on evidence of industry-
based skills built up through paid employment as
an apprentice or trainee during the HSC year.

of her HSC studies. April has
now been accepted to study
either a Bachelor of International Tourism and
Hotel Management or Bachelor of Business
Studies at both Southern Cross University and
Griffith University on the Gold Coast. April
also completed a Certificate III in Hospitality
through TVET and as a reuslt finsihed Year 12
with two Certificate III qualifications on top of
her HSC certificate.

technical, vocational and interpersonal skills that will equip them up
for success within the automotive industry.
Students will spend practical time in an automotive workshop

This hands-on course gives students a practical introduction to the construction industry
– showcasing the broad range of career opportunities available.
Students gain foundation knowledge and skills, including how to plan and organise
building activities, work with others in a construction team and use a range of tools and
equipment safely.

In this hands-on, high-energy course, students will gain the basic skills and
knowledge they need for work within the electrotechnology industry.
Students learn to safely install and maintain electrical equipment and
systems for industrial, commercial and domestic purposes including electrical
transmission and distribution equipment.
There are a range of electives to choose from including security equipment
installation, electrical machine repair, switchgear and control.

Course description
This course is ideal for students who are
inspired by food and who excel in a customer-
focused environment.
Students will learn about essential hospitality
duties, while developing a range of specialised
commercial kitchen skills in preparing, cooking
and serving food.
The course focuses on the practical application
of cookery principles, implementation of food
safety procedures and the presentation of
foods for a range of hospitality establishments.
Students also learn about the overall
hospitality industry and will build customer
service and communications skills, along with
a wide range of skills in food and beverage
service, accommodation services and other
