Meaning of ICT
 Information Communication a ICT refers to technologies that provide access
to information through telecommunications. It is similar to Information
Technology (IT), but focuses primarily on communication technologies, e.g.
the Internet, wireless networks, cell phones.
 Technologies which are being used for collecting ,storing ,editing and passing
on information in various forms (Ser,1997)
 Communicating information through technology.
 ICT also focuses on transforming information to learn easily and process raw
facts into relevant and timely information.
 It uses models like Video media, Audio media and Audio-video media
What does ICT mean in education
 Education in schools meant teaching in a traditional way, meaning using
chalkboards, books, pencils and textbooks when teaching and learning.
 ICT introduces a new way of teaching which means using telecommunications
to deliver content of learners, use of internet, computers and etc this is ICT
in education.
 This means that:
• Leaners make use of ICT based tools to search and find
relevant information
• Learners use Computer based services to write ,analyse and
present information
• Learners collaborate and work in teams to find information
which is one of the 21st century skills
continuation
 Teachers make use of projector to teach
 Use microphones to accommodate every
learner in class
 Use online tools like blackboard to upload
assignments
 Uses emails for notifications or messages
Does ICT in education mean complete change of the
curriculum?.
 Integrating ICT in education mean
change in curriculum and change in
the methods used in the curriculum
 The timeframe need ton have a change
 When integrating ICT I education the
curriculum focuses on skills needed to
build knowledge
 Syllabuses focuses more on leaners
needs
 Traditionally the curriculum is teachers
focused but through ICT the curriculum
become learner based.
 Focuses on reproduction of leaners
Benefits of ICT in Education( learners)
 Learning becomes more interesting
 It grasp learner’s attention
 Leaner’s participate more in class
 They become eager to learn everyday
 Global access to knowledge
 Leaners informed about disciplines beyond their immediate environment
 Provides learners with exposure to vocational and workforce skills
 Learners familiarise themselves with teamwork
 What working together with colleagues means and working hard towards
reaching a certain goal
Teachers
 Assist teachers with lesson
planning
 Teachers can connect other
professional fields in education
 Unlimited and broad platforms to
access information
 Teachers are able to enhance
themselves through self teaching
on internet
What could be the Challenges faced
when integrating ICT in SA education
 Electricity=Schools from rural areas
become more disadvantaged
 Trained teachers= Most teachers
especially in rural areas are computer
illiterate therefore it becomes a
challenge to intergrade ICT Lack of
funds
 Some teachers believe that traditional
way of teaching is the best as it is less
complicated
 learners lack confidence
 Lack of time and training
Solutions to prevent
challenges in integrating ICT
in schools
 Provided computer training for
both teachers and learners
 Fundraising
 Electricity backup like
generators
 Invite learners who are computer
literate to motivate learners in
the school

  • 5. Meaning of ICT  Information Communication a ICT refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. It is similar to Information Technology (IT), but focuses primarily on communication technologies, e.g. the Internet, wireless networks, cell phones.  Technologies which are being used for collecting ,storing ,editing and passing on information in various forms (Ser,1997)  Communicating information through technology.  ICT also focuses on transforming information to learn easily and process raw facts into relevant and timely information.  It uses models like Video media, Audio media and Audio-video media

What does ICT mean in education  Education in schools meant teaching in a traditional way, meaning using chalkboards, books, pencils and textbooks when teaching and learning.  ICT introduces a new way of teaching which means using telecommunications to deliver content of learners, use of internet, computers and etc this is ICT in education.  This means that: • Leaners make use of ICT based tools to search and find relevant information • Learners use Computer based services to write ,analyse and present information • Learners collaborate and work in teams to find information which is one of the 21st century skills
  • 7. continuation  Teachers make use of projector to teach  Use microphones to accommodate every learner in class  Use online tools like blackboard to upload assignments  Uses emails for notifications or messages

Does ICT in education mean complete change of the curriculum?.  Integrating ICT in education mean change in curriculum and change in the methods used in the curriculum  The timeframe need ton have a change  When integrating ICT I education the curriculum focuses on skills needed to build knowledge  Syllabuses focuses more on leaners needs  Traditionally the curriculum is teachers focused but through ICT the curriculum become learner based.  Focuses on reproduction of leaners

Benefits of ICT in Education( learners)  Learning becomes more interesting  It grasp learner’s attention  Leaner’s participate more in class  They become eager to learn everyday  Global access to knowledge  Leaners informed about disciplines beyond their immediate environment  Provides learners with exposure to vocational and workforce skills  Learners familiarise themselves with teamwork  What working together with colleagues means and working hard towards reaching a certain goal
  • 10. Teachers  Assist teachers with lesson planning  Teachers can connect other professional fields in education  Unlimited and broad platforms to access information  Teachers are able to enhance themselves through self teaching on internet

What could be the Challenges faced when integrating ICT in SA education  Electricity=Schools from rural areas become more disadvantaged  Trained teachers= Most teachers especially in rural areas are computer illiterate therefore it becomes a challenge to intergrade ICT Lack of funds  Some teachers believe that traditional way of teaching is the best as it is less complicated  learners lack confidence  Lack of time and training
  • 12. Solutions to prevent challenges in integrating ICT in schools  Provided computer training for both teachers and learners  Fundraising  Electricity backup like generators  Invite learners who are computer literate to motivate learners in the school
