- A plan to regain global smartphone leadershipTo execute on our plan to regain global smartphone leadership we announced a new organisation structure and a new business unit, called Smart Devices. Smart Devices, headed by Executive Vice President Jo Harlow, contains the new Windows Phone business, which forms the centre of our plans to build a winning ecosystem with Microsoft. It also contains the ongoing Symbian business. While our primary smartphone strategy will now be Windows Phone, Symbian will continue to deliver value to Nokia, operators, developers and consumers during the transition. SD also contains MeeGo, which will deliver a product later this year that we hope will attract and inspire high-end smartphone users and create a stepping stone toward our high end Windows Phone devices coming later. Once MeeGo has delivered that product it will transition to the Future Disruptions pillar of our strategy under CTO Rich Green, where it will become part of the effort to identify and address future industry, technology and device disruptions. This duel role means that MeeGo has an important part to play in the future of our company.
- The ecosystem we plan to build with Microsoft would bring together powerful strategic assets that would benefit everyone involved, providing exciting opportunities for Nokia, Microsoft, operators, developers, partners, consumers and even OEMs that currently use the Windows Phone platform. Immediately after our announcement, we witnessed a 66% increase in new Windows Phone application projects as developers rushed to benefit from the new global ecosystem. We saw operators give public approval to an ecosystem that would improve the choices and opportunities for them and their customers in the marketplace. We even say the CEO of HTC, itself a Windows Phone manufacturer, welcome Nokia to the Windows Phone platform acknowleding the benefits to everyone of a powerful third ecosystem.We’ve been asked how we differentiate on a third party platform. I have to emhasize that our first priority would be to differentiate the ecosystem to gain critical mass for Windows Phone and to beat competitive ecosystems. For that reason we are discussing if and how we introduce Nokia assets into the ecosystem for use by other OEMs. The most important thing to keep in mind is that we must not introduce any differentiation into the ecosystem for the benefit of Nokia that then creates fragmentation in the development environment or unnecessarily hinders Nokia’s ability to execute. We must learn from our past mistakes.Within the ecosystem, we are confident we can differentiate from other mobile handset manufcturers through Nokia’s core strengths: a signature Nokia user experience; distinctive design; Our local and global expertise; compelling hardware, and the strength of our brand, relationships, operator partners and global supply and distribution network.

- The investments in software enhancements will benefit not only future Symbian devices, but also the latest devices already in the market.A new home screen, icons and a faster browser are all part of the plans for a renewed Symbian user experience in 2011.Delivered over the air, these updates will be available for easy installation by the user directly from the home screen.The first major updates (seen here) will be available for download this summer with further enhancements coming later in the year.
