After such a wet and horrible June, let’s hope July
will deliver Summer sunshine in bucket loads.....
This month heralds the onset of the long school
holidays which means parents and grandparents
have to create 6 weeks of ‘family fun!’ – usually
provided on a tight budget for most of us.....
I know the cost of taking children to the cinema, theme parks and all kinds of
entertainment is huge, especially if there are more than one child in the equation.
But somehow a plan has to be finalised over such a long school holiday timescale.
In my childhood it was never about cost because youngsters produced their own
schedule of fun, usually outside in the fresh air playing football, cricket, tennis etc
and designing routes to take our bike party on rides.....
Sometimes we had over 20 of us on our bikes head off into the countryside with
our ‘delicious’ packed lunches carefully and lovingly prepared by our mums. When
we reached our destination (usually in a field!) we would get out our ‘lunch’ and
share between us so we would have a variety of food to eat.
We were care-free, happy and most of us were fit as a fiddle! We believed we
could do anything, go anywhere, the World was our oyster – well Boltons
Sportsground at Oakamoor was!
There were exclusive grass tennis courts at Boltons, impeccably kept by dedicated
gardeners who were proud of their work. Now I must admit that back then I was
not sure whether we were allowed to actually play on these courts!! But, just to make
sure we were OK to do so, we played on them when the gardeners were not around.....
On many occasions we actually walked from Cheadle to the grass courts, play
for around 3 hours, and then walk back home which was quite a trek – nowadays I
get tired driving that distance!!
My message to children, parents and grandparents during this school holidays
is to enjoy as much of them as you possibly can. As you can see, I am 62 years of age
and I remember my wonderful school summer holidays just as clear as if they
happened yesterday.
So I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all my childhood buddies
for helping to create so many wonderful happy memories for me – I hope you all
enjoyed them just as much as I did.....
I hope you enjoy reading this issue of The Voice colour magazine.

T
uffa UK have donated a Rainwater Harvesting
tank to The Globe Foundation’s Eco Centre &
Recycling Workshop near Uttoxeter.
A Bramshall based community recycling project
based at The Strawberry Farm Garden Centre on the
outskirts of Uttoxeter features a workshop, a classroom
and a shop and offers the opportunity for the local
community to learn more about recycling and for elderly
and isolated people to meet and garden together. They
also organise teams of local litter picking volunteers.
Kate Copeland, Eco Centre’s Director of the not for
profit community project relies on donations and
support to run the project. Kate contacted Tuffa UK
since she recognised a need for a water storage tank to
irrigate the garden. Originally she wanted a small storage
tank to contain the mains water that gathered in the
small workshop sink.
Rainy day savings
Marketing Executive, Charlie Goring from Tuffa
takes up the story. “Once we spoke to Kate we realised a
rainwater harvesting tank would give her a much greater
capacity. We visited the site at the Strawberry Farm in
Bramshall and after looking at the space advised our
1350 litre tank would be the ideal fit. The building had
no existing guttering, required for collecting water, so
we asked our neighbours on the industrial estate Tippers
to help us with the project.” Charlie was amazed at the
kindness and generosity of other local businesses and
said, “Tim Cope, the Buildings Manager at Tippers
Uttoxeter offered to save the day and kindly donated the
guttering and downspout, and helped the project come
together nicely.”
Helping the garden grow
The smallest in a collection of water storage tanks,
the Tuffa 1350 litre rainwater tank measures up at just
670mm wide, ideal to neatly conceal behind the Eco
Centre’s workshop. It is supplied with a rainwater filter
collector and a 240v pump with hosepipe snap
connector, giving a pressurised water supply for the
garden.
Tuffa’s Charlie called in a few more favours from
Tuffa’s suppliers. Stoke based transport provider
Diamond Freight agreed to transport and off-load the
tank at the nearby Eco Centre and vinyl sticker suppliers
Logo Shack, also based in The Potteries produced the
plaque to go with the tank.
Eco Centre Director, Kate Copeland was delighted
with the support of the local business community. “It’s
been a great project and the benefits of the Rainwater
Harvesting system are huge for us. Not only are we using
a free natural resource, we are saving money and energy
by not using mains water to irrigate our plants. I would
like to thank Charlie and the team at Tuffa for bringing
the project together.”

ttoxeter busiunesswoman Pauline Arrowsmith has run Finishing Touches,
a beauty, nails and sunbed salon in Uttoxeter, for 16 years.
But this year Pauline has decided to sell her business.
She said: "I've enjoyed every minute working here and will be sad to leave, my
customers have become friends, new and old, and I would like to thank them for all
their support all these years.
"I feel now is the time to pass it over so the business is up For Sale and a new

"I feel it needs someone to take it to the next level, there are multi-ambitions -

New release by
Dan Weatherer
S
ounds of a Madman is the latest non-fiction release by Cheadle-bred author,
Dan Weatherer. “This book focuses on the struggle of living with mental illness,
combining social stigma with internal suffering,” said Dan (39). “By design, it
is a difficult read. I want the reader to experience as accurately as possible the
mindset of a person suffering from depression/anxiety.
While there does seem to be a greater focus on the issue of mental health (at least,
judging by current media campaigns), there is still a way to go to educate and
empower both sufferers and the public alike. NHS services for mental health are
stretched beyond breaking point, and many patients are falling through the cracks.
I've lost friends and family who suffered, misunderstood and were let down by those
around them and the services they were directed towards. This book is dedicated to
them.”
Sounds of a Madman is available from Amazon in Kindle (99p) and paperback
formats (£2.99). Copies will also soon be available in all Stoke on Trent Libraries.

Vows For A Best
Friend
I vow to keep you safe, I vow to keep you warm, I vow to
keep you sheltered, hidden away from the storm. I vow to
never leave, I vow to never stray, I vow to say I love you each
and everyday.
I vow to be a friend when those times are tough, I vow to be
around when you've had enough. I vow to always listen when
you're feeling down. I vow to make you smile when you have
a frown.
I vow to keep these vows every single day, but there are many
more vows that I wish to say. But just know that I love you
and I have from the start. As you are my best friend and have
the other half of my heart.

needs are very simple - he just wants
someone to care about him and love
him. He loves his food and Dreamies are
a must. He enjoys a cosy bed to sleep in
each night and he loves to bask in the
sunshine. However he will not want to
share his home with another cat as he
prefers to have all the attention for
himself. Surely there is someone who
can offer a home to Tommy. If so please
ring him on 01335 390369 and ask for
Tommy. He is waiting for your call.
Marvin is about 14 years old. He’s grey
and white and absolutely adorable. He
came into care in April having been
found wandering around for several
weeks with no one to care about him.
Since being with us he has been
diagnosed with hyperthyroidism which
is being kept under control with
medication. He has put on weight and is
now really well. He needs someone to
care for him so that he can enjoy home
comforts. Cheadle Animal Welfare
Society will pay for his medical
treatment at Lime Trees Veterinary
Clinic/Hospital. Could you give Marvin
the retirement home he deserves? I do
hope so. Ring 01335 390369 or 01889
564045 if you can help him.

Comedy of Errors
F
ollowing the success of their production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in
2018, Cheadle Amateur Theatrical Society (C.A.T.S.) are busy rehearsing for
this year’s “Summer Shakespeare” offering, The Comedy of Errors.
Directed by Andrew Farrington, the Bard’s shortest play is set in the Greek city
of Ephesus and tells the stories of two sets of identical twins who were separated at
birth. Accordingly, years later, when the two pairs of siblings once again encounter
each other, chaos and misidentification ensue.
The production will run from Wednesday 10th until Saturday 14th of July at
Hales Hall Caravan and Camping Park, Cheadle and promises farcical humour,
characters worthy of a pantomime and puns-a-plenty.
Tickets are prices at £10 and are available from the C.A.T.S. website:
www.cheadle-cats.org.uk/ Alternatively, call Stephen on 07939943233 or pop into
the Cheadle and Tean Times’ office or Xtraclean Drycleaners. Shows begin at 7.30pm
each night and ticket holders are cordially invited to come early and bring a picnic,
weather permitting.

T
welve pupils from Year 7 attended the
Rotary Technology Tournament at
Thomas Alleyne’s High School, Uttoxeter.
The event was organised by Uttoxeter Rotary
Club. All 3 middle schools within our Uttoxeter
Pyramid (Ryecroft, Windsor Park and Oldfields)
competed against each other in teams of 4 pupils.
Pupils were set a challenge to design, develop,
build and test a working crane mechanism made
from a range of pre-selected materials with no
support from staff.
Judges were particularly looking at the
quality/presentation of the teams’ design
portfolio and extra points could be gained by
demonstrating good team-working skills.
Ryecroft Teams were:
· NO CLUE – Ben Brindley, Cameron Taylor-
McIntosh, Georgie Slack and Mia Peach.
· BLANKS - Victoria Heathcote, Cara-Marie
Gibson, Catherine Mangan and Lucas
Waldron-Slater.
· SHARKS – Rosanna Haines, Finn
Tomlinson, Bethan Parry and Christopher
Jones.
Huge congratulations to 'No Clue' who won
the tournament and were presented with a
beautiful trophy and individual medals. Huge
congratulations to second and third places,
‘Sharks’ and ‘Potatoes from Waitrose.”
All pupils showed great workmanship,
resilience and team-working skills and should be
very proud of themselves. Everyone thoroughly
enjoyed the day.

A
Wet Wet Wet tribute band would perhaps have
been more appropriate on the weekend of
Uttoxeter Lions’ 13th annual Beer & Cider
Festival at Oldfields Sports & Social Club.
The attendance on the Friday night was lower
compared to last year due to the downpours but the
audience were well entertained first by a ninety minute
set from rock covers band ‘Play it again Sam’ giving
great renditions of classic numbers from the likes of the
Rolling Stones, Status Quo and Free. Then the headline
act ‘Simply the Best’ the Tina Turner tribute act. She
performed many of the hit songs from the rock diva’s
catalogue whilst encouraging the audience to join her
in the legendary Tina dance movements.
Saturday began with Spinster Jones playing their
unique brand of Country Rock, featuring the
distinctive vocal talent Kim Harrison. The very popular
local Jason Callear followed before Uttoxeter’s party
favourites Upfront gave two sets keeping the dance
floor packed until closing time.
24 real ales giving a great variety of taste and
strength were on offer together with a dozen ciders and
perrys from the seductive sweet fruit ones through to
the seriously strong ones such as Whiskey Cask. At the
opposite end of the giant marquee was a Gin and
Prosecco bar which was again well patronised.
It proved a very successful weekend with crowds of
happy faces as the photographs show.
The Lions wish to thank main sponsors, RBA
Wealth Management, JCB and Barrowhill Hall, and all
the local businesses and individuals who sponsored
barrels for their superb contribution which allows us
to stage the annual Prostate Cancer Screening sessions.
This year the session was held in the marquee on
the Thursday before the Beer Festival. Although
numbers were down we think mainly because of the
long queues we had last year. We changed the
registration procedure this time to eliminate any
clerical work for the phlebotomists and after an initial
delay it was so streamlined that no one waited more
than 10 minutes.
The Laboratory has just advised the results at the
time of going to press; using the traffic light system
there were 406 green (low count), 15 amber (slightly
raised and further test advised when possible) and 11
red (consult GP without delay). Individual letters are
now in the post.

28. Life’s a Rollercoaster -
You’ve just got to ride it...
by Voice Editor Nigel Titterton
C
an you imagine how unbelievably frightening it was 75
years ago for the thousands of men who sailed for the
D Day Landings on The Shores of Normandy in
France...
The biggest invasion of Europe to defeat the Nazis and save
the United Kingdom and the World saw the largest armada
ever assembled head for France in the worst conditions
possible.
After several days, over 156,000 troops and merchant ships
from Britain, US and Canada, waited for the green light to
head for ‘the gates of hell,’ and saw weather conditions ease
slightly for the D Day landings to begin...
Filthy conditions on the landing craft and ships saw
soldiers erupting in sickness as the sea did it’s best to hamper
the landings but when the Gold Beach target was reached, the
bravery exhibited was almost beyond belief.
I was born in 1956 just over a decade after the D Day
Landings success which led to ultimately victory for our
democracy which we all enjoy now.
I wonder how would we all feel today if we had to
undertake such a momentous and courageous task? It beggars
belief doesn't it what those men did, many gave their lives for
us to live in freedom which I personally will never forget and
I thank those who returned and those who did not from the
bottom of my heart.
The recent 75th D Day anniversary saw Prime Minister
Theresa May, US President Donald Trump, French President
Macron attend the most emotional ceremony I have ever
watched – I admit I cried for most of the BBC coverage and I
am not ashamed to say so.
But the main success of the anniversary was to see our
Queen and the veterans stand together and receive such a
warm and heartfelt reception from everyone to add to those
who did not make it – as one person said “They laid down
their lives so that we might have a better life and build a better
world.”
On one of the boats heading for the Gold Beach in France
75 years ago was the youngest and bravest lad at only 15 years
of age -Jim Radford. Now 90 years old, Jim has released a
charity song in aid of the Normandy Memorial Trust entitled
‘The Shores of Normandy’ which you can read in my column
today... But please if you can’t use a computer ask a younger
member of your family to YouTube Jim's 'Shores of Normandy'
song so you can witness the emotional video – it must be
watched by as many people as possible...
Jim returned to the Gold Beach in France 25 years after the
landings and was greeted with a very different scene from
those horrific events in 1944. His song tells of the horrors but
also the happiness he felt seeing the beaches full of life and
hope with children playing.
Jim said “I was overwhelmed with the recollection of what
I had seen and moved to tears by the contrast. It took me a
long time to write my song and I hadn’t realised when I wrote
it that I would transfer that emotion but apparently I do
because lots of people contacted me and said I made them cry”
Please donate to Jim’s Normandy Memorial Trust now –
text DDAY10 to 70470 to donate £10 and text DDAY20 to
70470 to donate £20.
I have a lovely wife, two fantastic kids, five terrific
grandchildren and a wonderful family – without the bravery
of those heroes on June 6th 1944, I would have nothing...
29. In the cold grey light of the sixth of June in the year of forty-four
The Empire Larch sailed out from Poole to join with thousands more
The largest fleet the world had seen, we sailed in close array
And we set our course for Normandy at the dawning of the day
There was not one man in all our crew who knew what lay in store
For we had waited for that day through five long years of war
We knew that many would not return, yet all our hearts were true
For we were bound for Normandy where we had a job to do
Now the Empire Larch was a deep-sea tug with a crew of thirty-three
And I was just a galley-boy on my first trip to sea
I little thought when I left home of the dreadful sites I'd see
But I came to manhood on the day that I first saw Normandy
At Arromanches off the beach of Gold beneath the rockets' deadly glare
We towed our blockships into place and we built a harbour there
Mid shot and shell we built it well, as history does agree
While brave men died in the swirling tide on the shores of Normandy
For every hero's name that's known, a thousand died as well
On stakes and wires their bodies hung, rocked in the ocean swell
And many a mother wept that day, for the sons they loved so well
Men who cracked a joke and cadged a smoke as they stormed the gates of hell
As the years pass by, I can still recall the men I saw that day
Who died upon that blood-soaked sand, where now sweet children play
And those of you who were unborn, who've lived in liberty
Remember those who made it so on the shores of Normandy
The
Shores of
Normandy

A
fter all the rain a lovely June evening with
delightful views around Dovedale, a short
journey to the Staffordshire Derbyshire border,
a visit to ‘Hope House Costume Museum and
Restoration Workshop‘.
We felt as if we had stepped into another world,
joining NOTTY HORNBLOWER in her dream world
but soon realizing what hard work had gone into all the
collecting and serious research as well as the skilled
work carried out by a small team of restorers (offering
us a position on the team!) to make the wonderful
Costume Museum.
After being welcomed into her picturesque
seventeenth century home for a lovely tea, wondering
how to have the cream scones either the Devon or
Cornwall way and admiring the delicate table floral
arrangements. There was a chance to inspect the plants
in the charming garden under the watchful eye of one
of the cats! Before moving next door to the museum
in her renovated barn.
We were then presented with a warm-hearted talk
about her passionate dream of above thirty years, how
she recorded and restored not only the building but the
very many costumes, shoes and accessories over the
years.
Changing the museum displays gives a view of the
many Artefacts of significant importance that have
come to her in various ways, from purchases to the
countless donations she gets.
Notty spoke of the Bridle Dresses to the World War
and that she still visits Antique Fairs and Auctions.
Often seen in magazines and on television too, even
winning awards working with students.
Giving thanks for a very inspirational evening, to a
fellow Flower Arranger, Notty Hornblower. Everyone
thoroughly enjoyed a most interesting visit......

I
could hardly believe it when I opened the letter
from the Lord Chamberlain's Office to find that he
had been "Commanded by Her Majesty the Queen"
to invite Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Humphries to a Garden
Party at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday 29th of
May 2019!!"
I know that thousands of people from all walks of
life go every year to Her Majesty's Garden Parties, my
uncle Robert went to one many years ago but he was a
retired Colonel and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of
Glamorgan at the time. I never dreamt for one moment
that a humble old Royalist like myself would ever get
an invite...
My wife Sandra and I thought that we would add
to the occasion by taking the train, and travelling 1st
Class which, although it ensured us a seat, was a less
than exhilarating experience! The taxi which
transferred us from the railway station to our
magnificent Hotel close to Chelsea Bridge, took us past
the JCB London Office just off Park Lane, so I was able
to point it out to Sandra, as I had visited there many
years ago on an errand from Rocester HQ.
As a former 'old sweat' I have always loved the
pomp and ceremony of Trooping the Colour, and for
several years, although not being Guardsman parading
on the Horse Guards square itself, in the early 60's I was
involved with the security side, looking after the guests
gaining access into the building, both for the rehearsals
(there are two rehearsals known as Guard Mounts) and
on the actual day of the Trooping which Her Majesty
attends herself. In the course of these duties I even got
to speak to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who
each year arrived by carriage and watched the
proceedings from inside the building, which some
Royals still do today.
On one occasion I even managed to get invitations
to a final rehearsal for my Mother and first wife
Margaret to watch the parade from the upstairs
window of my Colonel's office. Margaret worked in one
of the offices as a civil servant, that was how we met.
But getting back to the Garden Party. This was
something completely different, something special, and
a once in a lifetime opportunity. So Sandra and I duly
'scrubbed up,' put on our Sunday best, and soaked up
the occasion, literally as it rained for much of the time.
But we refused to let the weather spoil the day for
us, as we mingled with people from all over the World,
as well as the UK, whilst eating our sarnies and cakes,
and drinking apple juice, whilst listening to the band,
who played everything from the Classics to Phantom
of the Opera.
The Yeomen of the Guard (Beefeaters) had been let
out of the Tower of London for the day to form an
escort for Her Majesty who was in attendance, and
seemed to enjoy mingling with the subjects trampling
all over her lawn. The Duke and Duchess of Suffolk
(Harry and Megan) were also in attendance without the
new baby. Also present were Princesses Beatrice and
Eugenie. Although we saw them, we did not get to meet
them personally. We arrived home late the following
day, shattered but proud to have been invited.
Google tells us that Queen Victoria introduced the
Garden Parties originally, but in those days it was only
for the nobility. Our present Queen then invited the
Debutantes, or Debs, as "their coming out", so it
became what it is today, when members of the public
from all walks of life, have their names put forward for
invitation.
Just what I did to deserve it I have no idea, but I was
only too happy to accept on behalf of us both and I am
extremely grateful to the person who put me forward.
By Royal Appointment...

Alton Castle opens its doors for
annual Garden Party fundraiser
T
he spectacular setting of Alton Castle will once again become the magnificent
backdrop for one of the longest-established fundraising events in the historic
Staffordshire village of Alton; the annual Garden Party and Castle Open Day.
All proceeds from this annual family event go towards St. John the Baptist Roman
Catholic Church and to Alton Castle, the Catholic Youth Retreat Centre that has been
based in the village for over 21 years.
The entertainment starts at 2.00pm on Saturday, 6th of July with a performance
by Painsley Catholic College Musicians, followed by maypole dancing performed by
pupils from St Thomas’ Catholic School in Tean and a display by pupils from Faber
Catholic Primary School in Cotton. The Cheadle Community Band will also be
performing once again this year at different times during the afternoon.
There will be lots of other activities during the fun-filled afternoon, including
abseiling, crate climbing, archery, football activities and led cycle rides through the
grounds of Alton Castle. The JCB digger experience is always very popular and a new
attraction at this year’s Garden Party will be alpacas from a local farm that will be the
main attraction in the new Garden Party Kids’ Zone.
There will be a chance to get a ‘behind the scenes’ glimpse of Alton Castle with
guided tours of the Gothic-style castle during the afternoon. Tours of St. John the
Baptist Church will also be available.
A regular feature of the Garden Party is the interesting range of stalls in the Castle
grounds, including tombola, bottle and cake stalls, as well as craft and decorative
displays. There will also be a garage sale to raise funds for the parish
Refreshments will be served all afternoon and hot barbeque food will also be on
sale. The action-packed afternoon will end at 4.15pm with a fundraising Duck Race.
Admission to the Garden Party is excellent value at just £1.00 for adults with free
entry for children. All visitors are kindly asked to respect local byelaws that forbid
dogs from entering Castle or Church grounds.
Chairman of St. John the Baptist R C Church Garden Party Committee Edward
Howard said: “The Garden Party is an important long-standing annual event in Alton.
There is something for everyone, including tours of Alton Castle, which is rarely able
to open to the public. While children enjoy the various action-packed activities and
attractions, such as the new Kids’ Zone, their parents can be found supporting the
parish by purchasing items at the various stalls or at our popular garage sale.”
Father Thé Quang Nguyen, Parish Priest of St. John the Baptist R C Church said:
“The Garden Party is an such important fundraiser for the parish, but it’s also a great
way of bringing the community together. It’s wonderful that Alton Castle and St. John’s
Catholic Church join forces every year to put on an afternoon of family fun while
raising much-needed funds.”

Ginny’s Community Corner
by Ginny Gibson of Uttoxeter
W
hat do you have for lunch? For me
I like a sandwich, plus a Twirl
(other chocolate is available) and a
bag of crisps. Seems simple enough, no
ground breaking news there, but what I didn’t
know until recently is that the plastic bag the
bread comes in is single use plastic, the twirl
wrapper has foil, so can’t be recycled in the
normal way, as does the crisp packet. So,
although I put all of the wrappers in the blue
bin (Uttoxeter) not sure of the colour in
Cheadle, they are not being recycled. I was
shocked, there I was thinking I was saving the
planet by putting everything into my recycling
bin and in fact there are lots of exceptions to
the recycling process.
How did I find this out? I went along to the Globe
Eco Centre, (run by The Globe Foundation) which
leases a space within the grounds of the Strawberry
Garden Centre, Bramshall Road, Uttoxeter ST14 5BE
and met with Globe Founder, Kate Copeland.
Kate is passionate about recycling and ensuring that
single use plastic, is reduced where possible and
recycled where necessary. To support the community
in doing that, she set up the Eco Centre with public
recycling facilities, not just for plastics but for other
items too, such as crisp packets, pet food pouches,
biscuit wrappers, chocolate wrappers and many more
items. Some are sent off to be processed but the plastic
is recycled at the eco centre itself.
But where does she get the plastic from to start this
project? The Eco Centre completes Litter Picks
monthly and salvaged the plastic where possible, they
also have a drop off point for the public, so you can take
the ‘difficult to recycle’ plastic such as bread bags,
plastic film lids and black plastic garden pots. Taking
the garden black pots is great, because I always have
lots of them that I don’t know what to do with, but now
the Eco Centre can have them.
After nearly a year of fundraising, the centre was
able to attain Precious Plastic machines to help process
the waste plastic and, combined with the craft skills of
the volunteers, they are now making pens, clocks,
candle holders and much more which are available to
buy at the centre.
It doesn’t stop there, Globe also offers sustainable
craft classes so that you can learn about becoming more
eco-friendly at home, this is anything from willow
weaving to making your own beauty products.
Plus, if you want to shop and not have all the
packaging, then you can go along to their zero waste
Eco Shop and purchase a huge range of products, such
as cleaning and household liquids, dried food such as
rice and pasta and bathroom products such as
toothbrushes and toothpaste tablets. The idea is to
bring your own container, just buy what you need and
therefore have no excess plastic to take home.
Just recently they have added a garden to the
project, where they grow edible crops for residents to
buy. One of the features in the garden that I particularly
liked was the hydroponics system, made from recycled
drain pipes, it enables plants to be provided with all the
nutrients they need via a water system, which is much
more environmentally friendly and crops do really well
be grown that way. Recently Ocado on line super
market have announced they are investigating growing
all their products this way.
So once again, Uttoxeter has a unique and ground
breaking project in its midst and all we have to do is
use it to ensure that the work continues to take shape.
If you want to be part of the monthly litter pick
session, please contact info@globefoundation.org.uk to
get involved, the litter you collect with be turned into
great presents for friends and family. Or, if like me, you
want to drop off your single use plastic to the centre,
just ensure that it is washed and separated out, they will
let you know what to separate and take it along to the
Eco Centre, which is open Tuesday – Friday 9am to
5pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm.
If you want to help at the Eco Centre, volunteers are
always needed, just go to www.globefoundation.org.uk
for more information.
So, to finish, putting our recycling in the recycling
bin is a start, but why not go that extra mile and take
your single use plastic to the Eco Centre. I am going
too, that way I can have my lunch, knowing that,
although not ground breaking, I am taking a small step
in the right direction and as the saying goes, “Great
things are done by a series of small things being
brought together” this is what the Eco Centre is doing,
why not be a part of it?
Down on the Farm
by Angela Sargent
“Cut them in June, come again soon. Cut them in
July they’ll surely die!”.
The showers we had last month have resulted in
good crops of thistles and nettles and one of our jobs
this month will be to cut them off.
There are different ways of getting rid of them- we
could use sprays but we prefer to mechanically cut
them, hopefully before they’ve seeded. I know birds
and butterflies appreciate them for food and habitat but
they are not in short supply, they take up space where
grass could grow and they are very persistent.
It’s quite an enjoyable job to do- looking back at a
‘clean’ field gives you a degree of satisfaction!
Our sheep have been shorn and we have wormed
the lambs, giving them a spray of fly repellant at the
same time. This should last for several weeks,
depending on the weather and keep them safe from
green bottle flies and their maggots.
Like all medicines, there is, what is called a
‘withdrawal’ period – this is a period of time those
treated cannot enter the food chain and it is
determined by the strength of the component chemical
used. We have to decide beforehand when we are likely
to be selling and then choose a product that fits in. Just
the same with cattle.
There is known resistance to some wormers and we
now have to be careful how they are used, so that they
still continue to have the desired effect.
One way is to only worm the dirtiest half of the
flock and let natural resistance build up in the other
half, another is to carry out faecal worm egg counts and
worm accordingly.
We’re keeping up with the dehorning, castrating
and tagging of our calves as they are born. It can
become a bit of a battle if we let them get too big before
doing and we sometimes get kicked and trodden on
(painful enough even though they are still young!).
It’s time to start combining cereals and then baling
the resulting straw. Potatoes will need irrigation and
you can see the automated hoses moving along the
rows if you watch.
Soft fruits are ready to be picked, as are the salad
vegetables and this is labour intensive- a bit of a
problem if temporary foreign staff is unavailable!
Fly tipping is becoming a horrendous problem – the
mess, source of fly infestation, danger to animals and
preventing access to land are just some of its annoying
results. Everyone can see it but why does it happen?
Who is doing it? Is it yours?

Lank’s Lore
By Steve ‘Lank’ Lavin
Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters
T
he other week my friends and I were discussing
nostalgic T.V. programmes of the past that have
disappeared nowadays that entertained us when
we were younger and the subject of All In Wrestling
came about.
Can you remember Kent Walton who used to
commentate on the World of Sport Wrestling
programme which was televised in-between the half
time and full time football matches on a Saturday
afternoon.
I amongst many others (it had over 12 million
viewers at its peak in the 1970’s including the Queen,
The Duke of Edinburgh, The Queen Mother and
Margaret Thatcher!)) watched it every week until the
Head of ITV Sport Greg Dyke who did not share
people's enthusiasm dropped the sport in 1988 - a fate
from which the sport never recovered unfortunately.
I used to really enjoy the sport and regularly used
to go on trips with my mates organised by Whieldons
Green Bus Company from Uttoxeter to the Victoria
Hall in Hanley on a Saturday evening to watch all my
favourite T.V. stars.
Uttoxeter was also not left out in the proceedings
with regular wrestling bouts being held at the Elite
Cinema again featuring many of the star TV names -
the more popular ones who are pictured below.
These nights were extremely popular as the sport
then was at its peak with not only male followers but
an array of the older generation of females mainly
pensioners who used to stand at the ringside shouting
abuse at the ‘Bad Guy’.
I have witnessed at first hand these ladies striking
some of the contestants with their umbrellas and
handbags as they walked or limped back up the aisle to
their dressing rooms much to the delight of an
enthusiastic audience. All part and parcel of an
extremely enjoyable evening.
Some people think wrestling was all a 'Put Up' and
complete showmanship affair but believe me that is not
the case, I got in discussion once with a pub landlord
who was an ex-wrestler about it all being a fix and he
demonstrated some holds on me and they did really
hurt, believe me!
Great days sadly well missed. Until next time

W
ell readers, Donald Trump has been and
gone, Theresa May has gone - well not
exactly, at time of writing she's resigned but
they haven't decided on a successor yet!
In the Vatican when they are electing a new Pope
they blow black smoke into the air until they make
their decision. If we did the same thing in Parliament
it would probably mean Guy Fawkes had been
successful! But seriously, let us just hope that they elect
someone who can get us OUT of the Brexit mess they
have got us into.
There was a lot of anti-Trump rallies going on,
including a childish balloon in his image wearing a
nappy, I thought we in this Country were a bit more
mature than that. Whether you like the man or not, the
position he holds should be respected, because when
Brexit kicks in we will need all the friends we can get.
That ghastly Eurovision song contest proves what
the rest of Europe thinks of us, with or without Brexit.
Any artist representing the UK is handed a poisoned
chalice, but we still plough money into the event, just
to get kicked in the teeth every year. I haven't watched
it since Katie Boyle hosted it, (and that was only 'cos I
fancied her!) before the Irish took over and it became
a joke!
Speaking of ploughing money into Europe, what
about the BBC taking my free television license off me
and my contemporaries, what a lousy trick. We older
people get very little in the way of perks, and it certainly
does not pay anyone to be thrifty, because having
served your Country, then worked all your life, paying
into a pension fund to make life easier in your old age,
someone is waiting to kick you in the teeth. Maybe the
Government will intervene, but I doubt it. Labour
introduced it and carried the cost, but the Tories then
passed the cost on to the BBC, who would rather pay
huge salaries to certain presenters who don't need it.
Just remember that Labour gave us the National Health
Service, bus passes and the minimum wage, the Tories
gave us the Community Charge (poll tax), added six
years more work onto the female population before
they can draw their state pension, at the same time
undermining the health service, police and Armed
Forces. Mind you if Corbyn got into power he would
like to abolish the whole establishment. In case you
think I'm just a grumpy old man whinging on, (and you
could be right!) before you know it those twilight years
will catch up on you also!
I finally got my trip to Buckingham Palace (featured
elsewhere) having missed out when my Dad got his
medal. Sandra and I had a lovely day, despite it raining,
and the rain seems to be following us as when my
Granddaughter Emma Married Jonathan Paull in
Rocester's St. Michaels Church on the 8th of June, (to
be covered more fully in the next edition), it was again
persisting down all day. But once more it didn't spoil
the occasion and we even got a rainbow to enhance the
event.
I'd like to finish with a quick review of the Denstone
Players annual Variety Show, held over two nights in
the Village Hall earlier in the Month,as always, and as
usual well attended by enthusiastic audiences. It went
to prove once again that there is some wonderful local
talent about. The ladies (plus one!) of the Roston and
Norbury Drama Group opened both halves of the
show, with their show stopping second half
performance bringing the house down. Not to be
outdone the Denstone WI also contributed a very
funny sketch. The rest of the performances coming
from the cast of the Denstone Players themselves, with
several pieces coming from the Junior members who
as always stole the show. Although I can't mention
them all by name, Marnie Tomlinson and Daisy Doyle's
'Bugle Boy' dance number brought an unforgettable
end to the first half.
Players stalwart Gill Brown, as well as doing the
choreography, and sharing directing duties with Marge
Stanley, also appeared in a couple of the sketches. Dave
Shooter's 'Vicar' was the compare who held it together,
Terry Davies was on the piano, providing the
music, and we even got him on stage in 'The Four
Potters sketch' which is a rarity!
Front of house, sound, lights, box office, bar, raffle,
plus the unseen backstage people, all important to
ensure the smooth running of every production of
which this was no exception. I was proud to have been
a small part of it. The next production will be 'A Case
Of Mistaken Identity and is my first attempt at writing
a play. I would love your support 3rd to the 5th of
October. A meal will be served during the interval of
each performance.
Before that on September the 3rd, The Royal British
Legion, Denstone Branch will also be presenting a
variety style evening, which promises to have a good
mixture of entertainment for your enjoyment, and its
for a good cause as you will appreciate. So two dates to
put in your diary.

From Rocester Garage to
Air Ministry Cheadle...
by Bill Woodier, formerly of Rocester, now living in Cheadle
Part 1
T
o put things in perspective can I point out that
my Dad was 63 when I was born, he was born
on 30th December 1875, that means Father &
Son have lived in 3 centuries, not rare no doubt but not
common either. Most official records give his year of
birth as 1876, but that was when his birth was
registered.
I understand from family records that the Woodiers
“moved back to Rocester” in 1883, however I can find
no official records to confirm this, & lived in what was
then called Church Street (now Church Lane) They
lived in the house adjacent to The Queens Arms pub.
At that time, the house also contained the original
Rocester telephone exchange.
The first official record of a Woodier in Rocester
shows that my Grandad Woodier died later in 1883 &
was buried in St Michaels Churchyard. The Woodiers
had lived in Lancashire, Cheshire & Derbyshire before
Rocester. Ironically my Dad was close to his 8th
birthday when his Dad died, as I was when my Dad
died.
In 1891 my Grandmother & Aunt Sarah were living
in Church Street, Eliza was a kitchen maid in a Chelsea
hotel, Annie a servant in Kent. I can find no record of
Thomas in 1891, but by 1899 he was an Army Medic
in the second Crimean War. My Dad was a border at
Denstone College, he worked for his education, being
taught for so many hours each day & working the rest.
By 1901 the family moved to 15, Ashbourne Road.
This remained the family home for the next 70 years.
My Dad and his Father were Blacksmiths. I believe
that was the reason they moved to Rocester, for them
to work as Blacksmiths, for Woodseat Estate, owners of
the Coach House. (Still part of Rocester Garage).
My Grandmother Emma was born in Mayfield &
her father, James Gaunt, was born in Rocester. My
guess is that through their local knowledge my
Grandad found work in Rocester & moved his family
from their home in Cheshire. The chart shows that the
Gaunt side of my family can be traced back to the 18th
century, living in Rocester, most seem to have been
Shoemakers. No wonder I have Rocester in my blood
& that my middle name is Gaunt.
The following text is taken from a series of notes,
written by Bernard Atkins from his living memory of
Rocester’s inhabitants and shops, from around 1905.
This shows that Rocester Garage began its life at some
time between 1901 & 1905.
Ashbourne Road – Thomas Keeling – Builder &
Undertaker. William Woodier, Garage & Cycle Hire
Shop.
Thomas B Dwyer – Grocery & Bake House.
This 1905 photo shows the fledgling business centre right. What is not generally known is the Gramophone side of
the business. Is that where my interest in Hi-Fi & music originates?
I have no information as to when Dad ceased to work as a Blacksmith, but in the 1901 census he is listed as
“Blacksmith – Worker”.
The Coach House in the late 1950’s.
The business had its roots at 15 Ashbourne Road,
selling first Cycles & Gramophones from the house in
the 1900’s. You can see the “trumpet” of an early
gramophone in the middle window & also my Dad
above it. Note that part of the area fronting the house
was Cobbled, this was so until the 1950’s.

Povey’s People
by Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott
It was Owd Grandad Piggott’s idea. One night in
Tummy Dawkins’s pub, he approached Club Paper Jack.
‘Listen’, he said conspiritorily, ‘Arv thowt o’ a brilliant
road o’ meckin’ a bob er two…’
‘Go on’, said Jack interested at once.
‘Thee knowst them early doors lot as come in abite
six er clock un get abite six er seven pints o’ ale dine ‘em,
‘specially ‘im with that big Mercedes as goos off lark a
rocket… well! They bay on the car park ut abite afe past
six termorrer nate an’ ar’ll show thee summatt.
The following evening at the allotted time,Club
Paper Jack was leaning on the wall of the pub when
Owd Grandad Piggott lurched awkwardly out of the
pub with his cap askew on his head. He appeared to be
rather drunk. He blinked owlishly around as the ‘early
doors’ lot followed him out. After several loud
exchanges, they decamped to various cars, engines were
started, horns were sounded and they began to move
off. The fellow in the Mercedes revved impressively and
shot forward. As he did so, Owd Grandad Piggott
lurched forward and banged his fist on the wing of the
Mercedes and emitted a bellow like a Galloway bull. He
dropped to the ground, his face a mask of terror and
pain and emitting horrendous howls and yells while
several of the fellow’s mates got out of their cars and
rushed to help.
‘What the...’
‘Hells bells!
‘Yer saw that!’ bellowed Owd Grandad Piggott, ‘Ay
drove straight at me... mowed me dine in cold blood...
Fetch the police!! Arm injured!’ The panic stricken
driver of the Mercedes quickly got out and rushed to
Owd Grandad Piggott’s aid.
‘I - I never saw you!’, he gabbled. ‘Where the hell did
you come from??’ He lifted Owd Grandad to his feet
who feigned an expression of terrible pain and agony
and emitted a torrent of atrocious language.
‘Listen feyther - I swear to God I never saw you...
are you badly hurt?’
‘Ah’m in agony’, shouted Owd Grandad Piggott. Yer
mowed me dine an arm gooin’ ‘ave thee fer it’. The fellow
well knew that the amount of beer he had drunk would
send him well over the limit. He put his hand in his
pocket and withdrew a roll of twenty pound notes that
would have choked a horse. He peeled three off and
thrust them at Owd Grandad Piggott.
‘Take this, and please accept my deepest apologies’,
said the hapless fellow, rustling the notes under Owd
Grandad Piggott’s nose enticingly.
‘It’ll cost thee another two o’ them’, growled Owd
Grandad Piggott gruffly, stuffing them deep into his
pocket as the fellow capitulated.
‘Another one ud bay a nice painkiller’, growled Owd
Grandad Piggott. As a further twenty appeared, Owd
Grandad seemed to recover considerably. Without a
thank you, he disappeared like a scruffy old ghost
leaving the Mercedes driver wondering...
Club Paper Jack was mightily impressed.
‘Undred an’ twenty bloody quid!’ cackled Owd
Grandad Piggott later that night in the pub. ‘...Fer ten
minutes work!!’
‘Arm gooin’ pull that one’, said Club Paper Jack
‘Listen, Just leave it fer a week or two,’ muttered Owd
Grandad Piggott ‘else thee mit smell a rot’. ‘Either that
or goo an’ try it at another pub... that’s best thing do...’
Club Paper Jack agreed with him.
‘Ar know whar ar’ll do... ar’ll goo th’Wate Cock at
Blarth Bridge... Thees one er two get in theer early
doors...’
So Jack made his plan. He would watch the early
drinkers and when he noted one who had drunk a
healthy quantity of beer, he would follow the fellow out
of the pub, watch which car he got into and throw
himself in front of it. But he wouldn’t ask for a hundred
and twenty pounds, he would demand a thousand!
The evening he planned to put his plan into action,
he lurked around in the pub as the early doors
contingent drank their fill, then he selected one who
had put away at least six pints of larrap, and followed
him out, wobbling about on the car park as the fellow
fumbled with his keys and getting ready to spring into
action. There was one major problem, Club Paper Jack
wasn’t over endowed with brains and whereas Owd
Grandad Piggott had over dramatised the main event,
Club Paper Jack did it for real. As the bloke started the
engine and moved off, Club Paper Jack launched
himself into the air and landed on his top lip with a
shriek of agony, then he emitted another howl of pain
as the car ran over his hand.
He had a further stroke of bad luck as the whole
event was witnessed by an off duty policeman and the
final upshot was that Club Paper Jack was fined for
being drunk and disorderly and attempted suicide.
His smashed hand was in plaster for almost a month
and his top lip resembled a deformed sausage for several
weeks. Needless to say, it was a good while before Club
Paper Jack listened to anymore easy moner making tips
from Owd Grandad Piggott again.
Each month Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott (Alan Povey) will write a unique insight into our local life and its
many characters. His infectious, humorous slant on people provides a different and unusual mix which hopefully

44. Weather fails to
dampen spirits at the
Uttoxeter Juniors/
Uttoxeter Lions
Football Tournament
By Jason Ainsworth
T
he great British weather was not going to dampen the spirits at the 4th annual
Uttoxeter Juniors & Lions 5 aside Football Tournament. A record 52 teams
took part over six age groups, from Under 7’s to Under 13’s. Teams travelled
from as far as Nottingham to take part in this celebration of football. Uttoxeter
Juniors were triumphant, winning in three age groups and runners up in a further
three.
After a torrid week of weather, the pitches stood up to the demands very well;
with an army of volunteers helping to ensure that the day went without a hitch. The
Uttoxeter Juniors and Lions would like to thank all those who took part, the
volunteers who ensured that the day went well, Oldfields Sport Club for hosting the
event and to JCB for once again sponsoring the trophies to ensure that every player
went home with a memento of the day.

T
he first two weekends in May saw eight Cheadle
swimmers travelling to Coventry for the West
Midlands Championships to compete against
clubs from all over the region for the prestigious
medals. To qualify to compete, the swimmers had
already had to earn times in the various events
throughout the season.
In the first weekend of racing, a total of 6 medals
were won. Zach Dale took silver in the 50m
breaststroke; Harriet Bebbington won silver in the
200m breaststroke and the 100m breaststroke and
bronze in the 400 individual medley while Ethan
Walker won silver in the 100m breaststroke and gold
in the 200m breaststroke in a very exciting final.
On the second weekend, the club added to its medal
haul with a further 2 medals being won. Ethan Walker
took silver in the 200 individual medley and gold in the
200m butterfly with an outstanding performance. In
addition to the medals there were also some fantastic
personal performances. Lauren Bull qualified for and
swam 3 events; Charlie Stokes achieved 6 long course
personal bests and Oliver Stokes achieved 2 long course
personal bests. Jimmy and Daniel Hopkinson also
raced in two events each.
Needless to say, the coaches and parents are
extremely proud of the swimmers’ achievements.
Though Cheadle is one of the smaller clubs in the
region, the swimmers have proved that they can
compete with the best and come home triumphant.
For many of the younger swimmers, the West
Midlands Championships is the pinnacle of the racing
year however one of our swimmers in the senior squad,
Harriet Bebbington will now turn her thoughts to
Nationals later this Summer. She has made British
nationals in the 200m breaststroke and English
nationals in the 200m fly. Well done Harriet

Each month Uttoxeter’s best known character Roy ‘Razzer’
Astbury will compile his very own ‘All-Time
Local Football Team’ which in his opinion is
the very best of players past and present.
‘Razzer’ will create a team in each issue
of The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice which
he believes incorporates all the
ingredients of a football outfit which
could be unbeatable!
He will be delving into his
thoughts to remember all the
terrific players in years gone by
whilst selecting those who are
exceptional in our present
day.
It should be a
fantastic talking point
in our community
and no doubt you
all will have your
views on

U
ttoxeter Golf Club has seen some new faces appearing recently out on the golf
course, and it is very exciting and encouraging to see that many of them are
juniors in the under 18 category, and most in the 12/14 age range. The club
is extremely happy to welcome all our new members this year, in particular the
younger players who are the clubs future. And remember that junior girls are welcome
to play golf too, our ladies section would make sure they are well looked after.
All Uttoxeter members are aware of our new juniors, and will be out there on the
course helping, advising and encouraging when they can.
The school holidays are almost upon us, and for only £17 a year membership for
under 18’s, you can play all day, every day, 7 days a week, even in the rain if the course
is open - no other costs involved, apart from some clubs and balls.
There is a 9 hole putting green to practice on, and even a practice area to improve
your skills with those longer shots or just short chipping.
Uttoxeter Golf Club Resident Professional Adam McCandless is on hand 7 days a
week and runs a well stocked golf shop, where you can get clubs, bags, balls and
everything else to go golfing with. He is always there for advice and lessons, pop in
any time, weekends too.
The club house is also open to the juniors everyday, where they can go for
refreshments, pop and some chips maybe, and then out for more golf.
As a member you will have access to the clubs on line booking system so that tee
slots can be arranged, it can get busy at times, particularly weekend mornings. If not
a member just ring Adam and he will help find you space on the course.
Come and join Uttoxeter Golf Club, give golf a try, these youngsters have, and are
having a great time, parents too are welcome of course.

S
unday 26th May saw Tean lady,
Victoria Hughes proudly
wearing an England vest and
representing her country at the
‘England versus Celtic Age Group
Masters’ 10k event in Birmingham.
Victoria, who runs for City of
Stoke AC and is coached by Kevin
Hendricken, has enjoyed club
running for 5 years and has raced in
distances ranging from 5k cross
country events to marathons.
She recently qualified within the
top 3 in her age group at the Chester
10k in March of this year. Chester
provided a particularly high quality
competition with many runners competing for places on the national team. Despite
incurring an injury during the race, Victoria remained undeterred and hopeful to
make it to Birmingham. After a planned period of rest and recovery, Victoria was
only able to return to a steady training plan provided by her coach, 3 weeks before
Birmingham, with the aim of simply getting her to the start line.
There was a strong team of 160 England representatives at the Birmingham 10k,
representing 140 affiliated clubs from across the country. The event provided a high
quality competition opportunity to race alongside some of the best age group runners
in the country. Victoria, together with her City of Stoke AC team mate Jamie Arnold,
had an elite start just behind the senior elite, which included British long-distance
runner and World, European and Commonwealth medallist Jo Pavey, MBE.
All looked positive on the day for Victoria and Jamie, and despite the undulating
course and windy conditions, and their injury hampered training, they both ran a
respectable race, with Victoria coming 8th and Jamie coming 3rd in their age
categories. Also representing City of Stoke AC, local runner Ian Salt, came 6th in his
age category.
Victoria would like to take the opportunity to thank her family and friends, City
of Stoke AC coach, Kevin Hendricken and team mates Louise Dawson and Jamie
Arnold, SWC Fitness coach Shane Wilson-Coates, Martin and Adam Copeland of
Lakeside Physiotherapy Clinic, Brian Cole and his team at Coles Injury & Rehab
Clinic, Amanda Davies - sports massage therapist, Rob Smith of Sure Clinic (Gait
and Posture Clinical Assessment Centre), Wendy Sales - Physiotherapist.
