HOW TO GET IN TOUCH
I have seen many new small businesses starting up in
our community lately which is extremely encouraging
for our local economy.
It’s great because these exciting projects are created
by entrepreneurs who strive to establish successful
businesses which in turn can provide employment for local people.
I was very pleased to be informed recently that Uttoxeter’s legendary and
best known entrepreneur Mr Joseph Cyril Bamford (Mr JCB) was honoured
by his company on the unveiling of a specially commissioned bronze bust on
the centenary of his birth, June 21st, 1916.
Sometimes it is hard to believe what Mr JCB actually achieved in his life!
Apparently as a child his playtime was spent building cars and boats which
obviously was an early sign of an inventive flair which started his path onto
becoming an engineering genius.
He founded his company in 1945 in a lock-up garage in Uttoxeter and
when he retired in 1975 JCB were turning over more than £43 million a year!
Mr Bamford’s son Anthony took over the business and powered it to a
worldwide status which I am sure his father would have been so proud of.
These days major films are being made of British people who have done
good - Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy is an extraordinary story of a non-league
footballer who day-in day-out strove to achieve success on the highest stage
in soccer and made it, winning the Premier League this season with Leicester
City and playing for his country.
But surely a chap building a worldwide business empire from a lock-up
garage in Uttoxeter would be a tremendous film success? But which actor
would be chosen to play our greatest local entrepreneur Mr Joseph Cyril
Bamford? Who do you think.....

I
t was bon voyage again as Windsor Park
Middle School, Uttoxeter, made its annual Year
8 trip to Paris for a week in May with 45 Year
8s accompanied by 4 members of staff. There had
been extra preparation, consideration and
consultation following the November attacks in
Paris but the local authority, travel company and
Foreign Office all deemed it safe for us to travel.
Thankfully nobody missed out on the opportunity
and experiences that the trip offers Windsor Park
students.
Chateau de Grande Romaine, on the outskirts
of Paris, gave them the perfect base for visiting the
wonderful sights of Paris as well as experiencing a
French theme park, Parc Astérix. The weather was
extremely kind for a jam-packed week, which
included climbing the steps of the Eiffel Tower,
climbing to the top of l’Arc de Triomphe for a 360
degree view of Paris, visiting the Louvre to see the
Mona Lisa and glass pyramid, visiting Notre Dame
cathedral with a chance to use their French buying
souvenirs and snacks nearby and seeing Sacré
Coeur deep in the heart of the artists’ district
where many students had their portraits and
caricatures sketched. On one of the days the
students visited Parc Astérix, a French theme park
– deliberately chosen to maximise their exposure
to French culture – which was enjoyed by all. Each
day was rounded off with evening entertainments
and access to the Chateau’s swimming pool.
Students used their French language skills and
attempted communication at every opportunity –
from buying a drink at a French service station to
ordering a crêpe in Paris, asking (and receiving!)
the correct flavour of ice cream and expressing
their opinions on the ‘escargots’ they tasted.
The whole trip was rewarding for students and
hopefully gives them a school trip to remember as
they move on to Thomas Alleyne’s.

Defibrillator campaign
W
aitrose have come to Trinity Road,
Uttoxeter and want to give something
back to the Town. Their employees
(partners) are raising money throughout July to
buy a Defibrillator for residents of Uttoxeter to
use to save lives. It will be located in the
Waitrose Car Park, so that if you are with
someone who is having a heart attack and dial
999 anywhere in Uttoxeter, the operator will
know to guide you to the defibrillator unit that
could ultimately save the persons’ life.
Carol Edmond of Waitrose explained, “At
Waitrose, each year we have Partners Month,
where we the employees(partners) choose a
good cause that will help the community we are
part of, this year as we are new to the Town, so
all of the employees will be raising money for
the Defibrillator.”
The cost of the unit from AED Donate
(www.aeddonate.org.uk/) is approximately
£2,000 and to raise this amount Waitrose will
be having all sorts of events in Store throughout
July and they are hoping that customers will get behind the initiative.
One of the ideas to raise the funds is to install exercise bike/cross trainer, in the foyer of
the store at Trinity Road and each employee will take a turn to cycle for an hour or two. They
will be sponsored on their session of the bikes, and while the store is open, make sure when
you walk past them, give them an encouraging wave and/or make a donation.
Waitrose are passionate about making a difference to the communities they are part of and
by linking to AED Donate, who are also community based defibrillator suppliers, it is the
perfect match. Have a look at the AED Donate website to read all about how you can donate

Ian North, 55 years old, a local lad from Barlaston

I
am a volunteer for the Caldon and Uttoxeter
Canal Trust, an enthusiastic bunch of people
who are trying to preserve our industrial
heritage through their passion for canals, in
particular the Caldon and Uttoxeter canals.
I was recently manning our stand at the
Stafford County Show and just chatting to people,
including those living in Uttoxeter, revealed that
there are probably many people in the area who
aren’t aware that Uttoxeter had a canal in the early
19th century. Sadly there are very few remnants of
the canal in Uttoxeter itself but luckily we do have
some interesting features that do remain on other
parts of the old canal.
Now to a bit of the Uttoxeter canal’s brief
history. The Uttoxeter canal was built as an
extension to the Caldon canal which itself had
been built as a branch off the Trent and Mersey
canal to service areas of local productivity such as
the Potteries and the limestone quarries at Cauldon
Lowe. The Uttoxeter canal which starts at Froghall
and travels 13 miles to Uttoxeter, opened in 1811
but it only had a relatively short life. It was bought
by the North Staffordshire Railway Company
which proceeded to close it in 1848 and build a
railway over some of it and that was that!
The course of much of the old canal can still be
followed with the section between Denstone and
Oakamoor being the most accessible as it is a
public right of way along the old railway track
bed. After periods of heavy rain sections of the old
canal can be seen to be in water.
Now to what the Caldon and Uttoxeter Canal
Trust is about. It started life in the 1960’s as the
Caldon Canal Society which had the aim of
reopening the Caldon Canal when it became
unnavigable. It achieved this goal and the canal
reopened from Etruria to Froghall in
September 1974. More recently the
society decided to focus its attention
on the Uttoxeter canal which had
been out of use for a century and a
half and as I said, had had a railway
built over it! . At this point the
society changed its name to the
Caldon and Uttoxeter Canal Trust.
The demolition of two significant
buildings in Uttoxeter (the
Wharfinger’s house and the canal
warehouse) spurred the society on to
see what could be done to preserve
or restore bits of the canal that
remained and prevent the loss of any
further structures.
The first project that followed
was to restore the Uttoxeter canal
first lock and basin at Froghall
Wharf. Work started in 2003 and it
was completed in 2005 and if you
have been there you will know how
good the restoration was and what a nice
recreational area it has created.
In 2009 a feasability study to restore the canal
between Froghall Wharf and Uttoxeter (ending in
the gravel pit) was conducted and the consulting
engineers’ conclusion was that it was technically
feasible. For now the trust has current priorities of
protecting the line of the canal from development,
maintaining in good order structures and lengths
of the canal that still exist and promoting the
creation of a walking route along the length of the
canal utilising as much of the original towpath as
possible.
In the longer term there are hopes of restoring
some or all of the Uttoxeter canal - dream on!
Every month there is a work party on the
second Thursday where a group of like minded get
together to work on various projects covering the,
preservation of the old structures that remain,
vegetation clearance etc. In fact our last work party
in June involved the reinstatement of 5 cast iron
replica canal mileposts between Denstone and
Oakamoor!

very club’s nightmare started to
unfold on Wednesday – 7.30.p.m. –
audience ready and waiting to see the
demonstration “Glorious Summer”
(considering the relentless rain outside we
were all living in hope !!)
However it was not to be, the
demonstrator had had car trouble in
Stourport and was missing!!!
But some resourceful members of the
club dashed home and collected oasis and
containers and raided Morrisons for
flowers, and the car park for foliage - and
proceeded to give an excellent
demonstration to the club,
Sheila and Cynthia rose to
the occasion and we had six
beautiful arrangements to
be raffled off at the end of
the evening.

Playwright Dan
Weatherer has signed
with a prestigious United
States based literary agency.
Cherry Weiner, a literary
agent of over four decades
experience, will represent
Dan’s forthcoming novel
The Tainted Isle, as well as
future book/TV and film
work.
“I’m thrilled to have secured the services of an agent of Cherry’s calibre.
I see this is a serious milestone in my writing career, one on which I can
build upon.”
Dan is also in talks with a London-based agent who is interested in
representing him as a playwright. His plays The Haul and Killing Gary
recently featured in the finals of the Congleton Players One Act Festival,
held June 11th at The Daneside Theatre, and Points, his political comedy, is
to be performed at the upcoming Speak Out event, on July 4th, in Stoke on
Trent. A handful of his plays has recently been picked up for publishing via
a US play publisher. This is the first time that he has had work for the stage
published, meaning that the performance rights will be on sale for three of
his plays, via publisher Heartland Plays.
“I started writing plays last year, and it’s great to see interest in my work
developing. I’ll keep working hard on new material, and will continue to
promote Staffordshire and her artists. I’m looking forward to getting
involved with the City of Culture bid, as I strongly believe we have a wealth
of artistic talent in the area that goes largely unrecognised.”
Alongside providing supporting poetry for local artist Holly Madew’s
Exposed exhibition (to be held August 12th-24th at One One Six, Stoke),
Dan is in the process of writing his second novel and his fourth collection of
short stories.
He will also be visiting St Thomas’s, Tean, to work with the year six and
reception students as part of their vocation day.

obody was complaining about
the entertainment on offer at
the 11th annual Uttoxeter
Beer and Cider Festival. Hundreds of
people appeared to be enjoying
themselves like never before.
But there was one fly in the
ointment. The beer festival coincided
with England’s first match in Euro
2016 and Russia’s late equaliser
dampened the spirits of many at
Oldfields Sports and Social Club.
It wasn’t the first time an England
football team has disappointed
hordes of fans gathered in a convivial
atmosphere drinking beer, and it
won’t be the last. But in this
particular instance, the organisers say
it had a damaging impact on beer
sales and on the profits for charity.
The festival raises thousands of
pounds every year for an annual free
prostate cancer screening event at
Uttoxeter racecourse, which is
estimated to have saved the lives of
up to thirty local men. But Gary
Hudson, a spokesman for Uttoxeter
Lions Club, said: ‘It was definitely a
day of two halves. Up till late in the
evening, everything was nearly
perfect as far as I could see. There’s no
doubt beer sales slowed down when
people were watching the football,
and we didn’t mind that, obviously,
but we were expecting a boom in
sales as people celebrated an England
win. The Russian goal in injury time
put a real dampener on proceedings.
Some people were so disappointed
they went home.
‘Sales were hundreds of pounds
down, even though the number of
people who attended the event was
the same as previous years, and
everybody who commented said
what a great time they had.’
The festival began with a
successful open mic night on the
Friday, followed by a full day of
entertainment on the Saturday. Easy
listening from Jazz and All That and
Kate Copeland was followed by an
up-tempo covers set by Jason Callear
with Sean Prior on bass.
The evening was rounded off with
almost three hours of rock and pop
covers by Upfront, the band who have
made the beer festival their home
from home. There were more people
dancing than ever before.
Most of those dancing and
apparently having the best time were
women. Most of them had not been
watching the football.

T
his month I have been
thinking about how
communities are
affected by music and this
weekend, my hubby and I
went to the Acoustic Festival
at the Uttoxeter Racecourse.
We chose to go on Sunday
and as we walked up to get
our tickets at the box office,
we were met by wonderful
sounds being played by Pig
Man and the Rubber Band.
You know me, I couldn’t help
but chat to them and found
out that they had just finished
their set and were so happy;
they decided to play to all the
people coming into the
festival. What a great
welcome. As we walked
along, Midge Ure of Ultravox
fame, was just walking along
the other side of the fence, and
of course I shouted over, “Oh
Hi, could I have a quote for
the Uttoxeter Voice magazine
about how you see music in
the community”. Without a
second thought, he held up his
acoustic guitar and said,
“Music is the common
denominator of our
community, it’s what we’ve all
got to share”. Then he came
up to the fence so I could take
a photo, then turned and went
through the curtains to the stage for his sound
check. We hadn’t even got to the main gate and I
was inspired by both encounters, Mike Stephens
who organises the event explained, “Each band
creatives its own culture/community via its fans, all
we do as organisers, is to ensure the acts that play
here are like minded, namely acoustic based, so we
can create a great festival community. “
When we finally got through the entrance gate
and into the festival, we got the sense of
community that Mike was talking about. There
were children bouncing on trampolines, other kids
having their faces painted, belly dancers doing their
act, other people listening to a really dynamic story
teller and what struck me about the adults if they
were all wearing different hats, some straw, others
funky steam punk, top hats, knitted hats, so my old
gardening hat fitted in perfectly. Were the hats a
part of defining which element of the community
they belonged too?
We made our way to the
Real Ale tent, my husband
needed to get some practice in
for the Beer Festival that is
taking place at the Uttoxeter
Rugby Club next weekend!
As we walked into the tent,
we were hit by a wall of
fantastic voices; hundreds of
people singing “Na, Na, Na,
Na Na Na Na”, the chorus of
Hey Jude – they were singing
along to the Biggles Band,
which is made up of lots of
wonderfully creatively dressed
chaps, who really put on a
fabulous show, the
atmosphere was infectious.
Looking at the hats of their
fans, I would say they
favoured straw and patchwork ones.
At the end of their set, they
advised everyone to get to the main
stage, as Midge Ure was starting and
some people wandered across the
field and took up their seats for the
next part of the day.
Midge Ure fans enjoyed a
fantastic selection of Acoustic
versions of all his famous songs, his
acoustic version of Vienna was
spectacular and the whole place was
taken back to their youth. But instead
of dancing wildly, now, me and his
other fans were all at the festival with their
favourite collapsible chair and a hat. There were a
huge range of hats in his crowd, so clearly Midge
Ure has an eclectic range of fans. My battered
gardening hat fitted in nicely and my collapsible
stool was a life saver, the joys of middle age, but
lovely to be reminded of a joyous youth!
The community atmosphere was incredible, we
had Pesto Penne in the Italian tent and chatted to
a man who had travelled from the south coast to
come and see Judy Tzuke – so off we went to see
her play and I have to say, she was amazing. Her
daughter joined her on stage alongside their
guitarist and the whole tent was entertained with
melodies of such sweetness it was quiet moving.
Just to keep the theme going, her fans had top hats,
straw hats and patchwork ones too.
Beautiful Sound on the other hand, came onto
the stage and the whole place erupted into a
frenzied dancing session. When they played “Don’t
marry her”, everyone was singing, not only the
audience but all the stall holders, the children were
dancing and the atmosphere was electric. I was
sitting on my trusty stool at the front of the crowd
and looked back to their community of fans, I
realised I fitted in their community of fans nicely,
however, I am now the person with the kitchen
always tidy and the bathroom clean!
Their set was really good fun, the acoustic
guitar player had met Midge Ure back stage and
couldn’t contain his excitement about having his
guitar signed by Midge and of course the
introduction to Edward, the teddy bear mascot
came on stage when they played, “I need a little
time”.
Before we left the festival we couldn’t help but
visit the Lurcher Gallery tent, (www.lurchergallery.
com) they seem to have provided most of the really
funky hats that were on show at the festival and
they explained they recycled, repaired and re-
patronised materials to make their hats, a
wonderful community activity.
I have to thank Mike Stephens for providing
Uttoxeter with a wonderful community feeling
festival, he is truly a master at choosing bands that
create an incredible mix of fans that build together
a safe, fun, family friendly festival for everyone to
enjoy and of course that also welcomes all hat
styles!

Mud Run entrants
slither and slide to
£55,256 NSPCC boost
A
bumper field of more than 2,500 people
today scrambled and ran their way around
JCB’s Mud Run course– delivering a
massive cash boost to the NSPCC in Staffordshire.
The 5th annual JCB Mud Run raised an
amazing £55,256 – bringing the grand total raised
for the charity since the event started in 2012 to
more than £230,000. Entrants flew in from as far
afield as Singapore, France, Germany, Spain and
Holland.

Bamford - was among the first wave of runners to
set off, competing in a special 10km version of the
race reserved for 9am starters.
George said: “This is my 4th JCB Mud Run and
every year the event just gets better. It’s fantastic to
see so many people taking part and not only
enjoying themselves immensely but raising a
fantastic amount of money for the NSPCC as
well.”
George added: “The JCB Mud Run is a great
example of camaraderie, people helping others
through the mud – that’s the kind of thing that it
embodies. It has been amazing this year and it has
been great seeing the smiles on people’s faces.”
George handed over the cheque to the NSPCC
along with Zoe Cooper, 37, of Newcastle-under-
Lyme, her brothers Ben and Sam Watts and
sister-in-law Jayne Watts. Zoe’s late husband Andy,
who worked for JCB, was a stalwart supporter of
the JCB Mud Run, taking part in every event since
it started. He tragically died in a road accident near
Rocester in March.
After handing over the cheque, mother-of-three
Zoe, Ben, Sam and Jayne were part of a team of
more than 30 family and friends who pulled on
their running shoes and completed the mud run
course in memory of Andy. Their efforts raised
more than £6,300 for mental health charity Mind.
Zoe said: “The run was brilliant. Everybody
was helping each other out. I feel I have taken
Andy along with me on the run – he has been
laughing at us covered in mud. It was great to
come together and do something so positive in
memory of Andy. He loved to do the Mud Run and
to have so many people taking part was a
wonderful tribute to him. Andy suffered from
mental health issues all his life and to have raised
so much money for MIND is amazing and I’d like
to say a huge thank you to everyone who has
supported us.”
The JCB Mud Run has gone from strength to
strength since it was first staged in 2012, when 500
people entered. Today’s field attracted entrants
from afar afield as Cornwall, London and the Isle
of Man and they slithered and clambered over 35
obstacles over an 8km course on land near JCB’s
World Headquarters at Rocester watched by
around 7,000 spectators. The 10km race at 9am
gave competitors the chance to qualify for the UK
Championships of the Obstacle Course Racing
Association (OCRA).
Mark Dalkins, 45, of Cheadle, a member
Cheadle Running Club, won the OCRA ‘member
race.’ He said: “It was a tough run with difficult
obstacles. It was my third JCB Mud Run win in the
elite wave. Two years ago I won the JCB North
America Mud Run in Savannah –there’s just as
much satisfaction in winning today.
Jason Burgess, 40, from Leek, who won the first
two JCB Mud Runs, just missed out on beating
Mark. He said: “We went head to head for the first
time and it was a real battle all the way. Mark beat
me by two seconds.”
The NSPCC is JCB’s nominated charity and the
proceeds of the JCB Mud Run will support the
work at Carole House in Newcastle-under-Lyme,
the charity’s service centre which was set up after
JCB and its employees completed a £2 million
fundraising campaign. Carole House is named in
honour of Lady Bamford OBE and JCB’s support
of the NSPCC over more than 30 years.
Kirsty White, NSPCC Partnership Manager,
said: “On behalf of the team at Carole House, I’d

like to say a big thank you to JCB for digging deep
and hosting the Mud Run as part of their ongoing
support for our work with the most vulnerable
children in Staffordshire. Huge thanks also to all
the mud-lovers who have braved this amazing
obstacle course and raised vital funds to help keep
children safe from harm.”
Mud slides, a 100ft underground tunnel,
monkey bars and climbing walls were among the
obstacles competitors tackled around the course.
And just to ensure youngsters didn’t miss out, there
was also a mini Mud Run course for five to 12-
year-olds which proved hugely popular.
Rachael Jordan, 29 and Kate Dale, 31, both of
Cheadle dressed in superhero costumes take part
in the Mud Run. Rachael was ‘Wonderwoman’
and Kate was ‘Superwoman’. “We thought the
costumes would make it more fun,” said Rachael.
“We both like doing the JCB Mud Runs and we
thought this particular charity was brilliant.”
A group of customers from the Cave Fitness
gym in Leek entered dressed in caveman and
cavewomen outfits. Manager Paul Butten said:
“We thought the caveman theme would suit the
JCB Mud Run perfectly and of course it fits in with
our name. Our group is made up of me and a
colleague plus 28 of our customers. We entered last
year and we had such a good time we thought we
would try it again.”
Two radio presenters did the JCB Mud Run to
raise money in memory of a friend who died in a
car crash. The duo, who both work on Moorlands
Radio Sports Beat, were raising money for the
Kieran Rutter Legacy Fund. Kieran died following
a fatal collision 12 months ago on the road
between Leek and Uttoxeter. Damien Hopkins, of
Stoke, said: “There were seven of us running in
memory of Kieran. It’s a worthy cause and we all
remember him with affection.”
Colleague Anthony Knight, also of Stoke, said:
“The Mud Run is a worthy local event and we had
the extra motivation of raising money for Kieran.”
Nine members of Staffordshire Housing
Association took part dressed as bees with names
like Queen Bee, Zombie Bee and Barbie Bee.
Darren Perry, of Stoke: “We are raising money for
the Alzheimer’s Society and we were joined by
paramedic Sam Robinson who has just come off a
12-hour night shift.”
Paul Hudson, a JCB Team Leader in the
Loadall Business Unit entered the Mud Run to
keep up his fitness after overcoming cancer. Paul,
who battled through Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
four years ago, took part alongside seven on his
colleagues. Paul, of Swadlincote, said: “It was my
second time and I have been training hard. It was
a great event and a perfect way of keeping my
fitness levels up.”
Six women from Derby dressed in pink with
tutus took part to raise money for the Enthusiasm
Trust. They were led by Tracy Macdonald and
Helen Constant, the proprietors of Pink Punch
Fitness.
Heather Russo, who works at the Trust, said:
“We all train together and we thought it would be
great fun. The Enthusiasm Trust provides a
mentoring service for young people with their first
foot in the criminal justice system. We encourage
the youngsters to take the first step into the
unknown away from crime, so we thought we
would lead by example and try something new. “
Several plane loads of employees from Holland,
Italy, France, Germany and Spain flew over to
represent VPS in the Mud Run. “Our company
uses JCB Towers extensively and we have come
over as a team building exercise,” said Jaimy
Daeneviel, from Holland.
David Abernethy, 48, flew over from Singapore
to join Van Leeuwen colleagues. He said: “I used
to work in the UK and when my colleagues invited
me to take part I didn’t hesitate.”

he centenary of the birth of JCB’s Founder
was today marked with the unveiling of a
specially commissioned bronze bust.
Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE was born on June
21st, 1916 at the family home, The Parks,
Uttoxeter, the son of Cyril and Dolores Bamford.
As a youngster playtime was spent building cars
and boats – early signs of an inventive flair which
would see him become one of Britain’s most
celebrated engineers.
When Mr Bamford retired in 1975 and handed
over to his son Anthony, the company he founded
in a lock-up garage in Uttoxeter in October 1945
was turning over more than £43 million a year and
employing hundreds of people. He had also
become universally known as ‘Mr JCB’ as well as
‘Jamais Content’ Bamford, thanks to his
unwavering drive to do things better.

marked the centenary of his
birth and his many
achievements by unveiling the
one and a quarter scale
bronze bust at JCB’s World
HQ in Rocester.
It is the work of another
innovative son of
Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent-
born sculptor Andrew
Edwards, 52, who has spent
five months creating the
image of Mr Bamford in his
1960s heyday when JCB was
establishing itself on the
world stage.
Lord Bamford said: “My
father was without doubt an engineering genius
and we wanted to mark the centenary of his birth
and the huge contribution he made to Staffordshire
and to Great Britain. We are delighted with the
bust and it’s very fitting that it has been created in
the county of his birth and by a sculptor whose
talent was developed right here in Staffordshire.”
The bust will now be on permanent display at
JCB’s World HQ and will be seen by the thousands
of visitors who pass through the company’s doors
every year.
Andrew Edwards said: “I am always extremely
nervous when I undertake projects of this nature
because they are so very personal to the family
members involved. By working closely with the
Bamford family I believe we’ve created a
wonderful likeness of someone who is
undoubtedly one of Staffordshire’s most famous
sons. It has been an honour to have undertaken
this work.”
The bust weighs around 50kgs and stands
around 700mm high. It’s not the first bust of Mr
JCB to be commissioned; a smaller one was cast in
1964 and presented to him by employees in
gratitude of a £250,000 bonus he shared with the
workforce after a record year. That work of art sits
on Mr JCB’s original desk in the Story of JCB
permanent exhibition at the World HQ.

real community spirited effort. Local
knitters have given up their time to
decorate the whole length of Cheadle high
street in an array of red, white and blue to
celebrate the Queens 90th birthday.

Dee Beardmore & Hayley Beresford pictured
thought it was time this creative little town put
it’s local talent to good use with a colourful
makeover so began an appeal for volunteers.
Posters & flyers were printed & a Facebook group
formed. Local artist Dee commented the response
has been absolutely overwhelming with shop
owners,local primary schools,groups & townsfolk
joining in. The unique items that have been
created are fabulous. The pinnacle being the
stunning maypole decoration attached to the
town centre monument beautifully designed &
constructed by the Tudor House knit & natter
ladies.
The town was buzzing and the atmosphere
was amazing. I’ve not seen so many smiling faces
in town for a long while with folks taking
photographs & discussing the displays & knitted
characters. The Queens guards created by mum
& daughter Kathy Miller & Chrissie Beardmore
proved very popular as did the Redeezine
scarecrow.
Hayley who provides a wide range of coffee
from around the world commented “its amazing
how the community has come together to make
the event such a success, the town came alive”
The couple would like to say well done and a
huge thankyou to everyone who gave up their
time to create the beautiful masterpieces also to
the group of ladies & gents who gave up their
Friday evening to decorate the high street ready
for Saturday.
You are all amazing & should be extremely
proud.

I
n the 17th century, members of the Society of
Friends, also known as Quakers, who lived in the
area met together in their houses. However, in
1700 one of them, Robert Heath, emigrated with his
wife and daughter to America along with other
Quakers. Before leaving he left his house, now 39a
Carter Street, Uttoxeter, and adjoining land, in trust
for local Quakers, who decided to build a Meeting
House and burial ground on the site.
The Meeting House, now at 39 Carter Street,
was registered as a place of worship in 1706. There
are 60 burials in the burial ground noted in Quaker
records. Before the land was given, Quaker burials
had taken place in a corner of a field near the church
in Stramshall. Most graves are marked on a plan of
the burial ground, only three having stone tablets to
mark them. These include Samuel Botham, who
died in 1823, father of the well-known Victorian
writer Mary Howitt, and Harrison Alderson, Mary’s
brother-in-law, who died in 1871 whilst on a visit
from America to visit friends in the area.

Meeting House and also in Redfern’s Cottage,
Museum of Uttoxeter Life, on Carter Street,
opposite the Meeting House.
In the early 20th century the grave mounds were
levelled to make a lawned garden. As tenancy of 39a
Carter Street changed over the centuries the burial
ground and adjacent garden area went through
phases of careful maintenance or neglect. Three
years ago work began to restore the overgrown
paths and generally tidy the garden. Volunteers were
led by Bob Taylor and his wife Michelle, who have
worked hard in all weathers to create a garden of
flowers, vegetables and fruit trees with wildlife areas
and peaceful places to sit.
It was decided to open the garden officially and
Uttoxeter Friends chose the week following
International Conscientious Objectors Day to invite
the former MP for Uttoxeter, Janet Dean, to open
the Peace Garden. For the occasion Michelle created
a Peace Trail of quotations about peace which are
scattered around the garden.
The sun shone on Saturday 21st May as Janet
congratulated Bob and Michelle on the beautiful
garden and also the Friends on recently gaining
Fairtrade Place of Worship status for their Meeting
House, Janet being Chair of Uttoxeter’s Fairtrade
Steering Group.
If you would like to visit this haven of peace in
the centre of Uttoxeter, the garden is open every
Wednesday, weather permitting, from 10.00 and the
Friends hold a short meeting at 12.30, followed by
refreshments to which all are welcome.
If you would like to find out more about the
history of the Meeting House and burial ground, the
House and Peace Garden will be open for Heritage
Open Days – Saturday 10th September between
10.00 and 4.00 and Sunday 11th September
between 12.30 and 3.00. Admission will be free and
refreshments will be available.

PENGUINPIG the play!!! So exciting! Firstly, let me tell
you all about PENGUINPIG the book…

I’m so proud
of this little book.... in it’s short existence
its become an Amazon best seller (wow!!),
it’s been turned into an audio book with
Cebeeies Rebecca Courtney, it’s used not
just in this country but also around the
world (amazing!) to teach Internet safety
to children and at the start of the year... It
was developed into the PENGUINPIG the
play!! Woohoo!!
I am by far the biggest fan, it’s so
surreal to see the little character’s I drew
now in 3D! All with little voice’s and
songs! Literally a dream come true for
me!
I’ve been following Traum; the theatre
company who produced the play from the
offset! They started out with our
PENGUINPIG at the prestigious Little Angel Theatre in
London and then its continued to tour schools and theatres
all over the country, check

In May it visited a school
in Tamworth and with it
being so close to home I
couldn’t resist! Not only to
go and see the all singing all
dancing performance again
but to also take two of
Uttoxeter’s biggest
PENGUINPIG fans with me;
Paddy and Mara McCarron!
The McCarron’s got a special
tour of the set with Traum Director Jane Crawshaw with
Mara saying “ I Loved it too much!” It was the best day!!

Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters
W
ell I cannot believe how time has flown
after these last few years. Believe it or not
this edition is my 50th column I have
written for this super community magazine with
my ramblings and 6 years since I was approached
by my friend Nigel Titterton to write a monthly
piece for him. When Nigel mentioned the idea of
producing this mag originally I said to him you will
not last 6 months, with my so called past
experiences of printing such endeavours. How
wrong could I have been. Nigel is now into his
65th edition and is getting stronger by the month
with its increased circulation and area coverage,
quality columnists and impressive artwork and
advert content which get some great results and are
very competitively priced.
I must praise him where praise is due especially
with the mass of local competition in the
advertising world and wish him all the best in the
future.
I would also like on this special occasion for me
to thank everyone who has approached me over
the past years with photographs and ideas for my
column without you all I could not have lasted so
long and I hope that I have served you well with
my responses and I look forward to doing future
editions.
Can you remember the film called The Swarm
back in the late 1970’s? A typical disaster American
movie where a swarm of bees invaded Texas
bestowing death and darkness upon the
inhabitants.
A few Fridays ago I thought that this plot was
recurring for real. During a lovely sunny afternoon
the staff and I had all the doors and windows open
as it was quite warm to let a bit of air in and enjoy
the sun as it is a rare occurrence nowadays, when
all of a sudden it became black outside. My wife
uttered, “That’s typical we have had a just few
hours of this glorious weather and now it is going
to chuck it down with rain”. How wrong could we
have been. Within a few minutes swarms of bees
started to emerge through the open doors and
windows of our premises. We quickly shut them all
and swatted out the bees that had come inside
whilst the wife continued to do a war dance in
fright around the workshop floor, “Do something
about them!”she screamed in horror.
I had personally in my whole lifetime ever
witnessed anything like this. On peering from an
office window I saw that, forgetting the virtual
1,000 flying about the sky, masses of the swarm of
bees had settled on our waste bin in the yard
outside (it had to be ours didn’t it) possibly
because of it’s bright yellow colour which attracted
them (it does not contain any waste food or the
likes, only waste paper and cardboard).
We were soon visited by our neighbours
enquiring as to what we were going do do about
them.
As it was close to finishing time the staff of the
neighbouring premises were afraid to come out
and get in their vehicles to make their way home
scared of being badly stung in the process which I
personally do not blame them as I am no big lover
of stinging insects myself with past experiences of
the pain and suffering and sometimes danger they
can enforce on someone.
I had to, very quickly, find a solution to quell
this situation, but what? Because they had settled
on my waste bin it was my responsibility I was
informed to do something about it (it would be
wouldn’t it, why couldn’t they have landed on
someone else’s bin and let them deal with them, no
it had to be mine, my typical luck)!
As by this time it was quite late and I had not
witnessed this phenomenon before I suggested that
everyone made a hasty retreat from the area and
leave me to ponder over the situation.
I decided to leave the bees put and see what
developed the next day. On the Saturday morning
whilst I was busy doing chores at home, my wife
went down the town on her usual shopping
expedition and called at our premises at 11.00 am
to survey the situation. The bees where still in
abundance there and had accumulated even more
so. On returning back home with this information
I very quickly consulted Google on the web to find
out any information on ways of removing them.
As usual Google is a wonderful informative
search engine with a load of very useful
information. I found out through Google that they
were people available that would come and collect
the bees, dependent on their type for a nominal
charge. That would suit me down to the ground,
as I envisaged an extortionate price involved
similar to having to pay for private vermin
controllers now that the council have passed the
onus of removal onto the private individuals
responsibility in a lot of cases for this type of
problem.
I found the contact phone number of a such
person whom was local and immediately rang him
to explain my dilemma. He was a professional Bee
Collector that I spoke to. After describing them to
him, he informed me that they were honey bees
and he would come down within the hour for the
price of a bit of petrol money and the cost of the
chemical that he used to collect them with which
would be minimal also adding that he would be at
my premises within the hour and would ring me
on arrival to meet him. Sure enough he kept by his
word and my phone rang as promised with him
enquiring as to where were the bees? I found out
that he had misheard my location of the bees and
was situated on ASDA’s car park as opposed to
ASDA’s service yard. He apologised for the error
and said that he would relocate to the right
location and ring me again. A few minutes later he
rang me again. “Where are the bees”, he enquired
again.
I thought that he could not have made a
mistake on the location twice and after describing
exactly where he has he was certainly in the right
place but the bees which had been prevalent 1 hour
previously had completely all but a handful on the
wheelie bin gone and relocated themselves
somewhere else to be some else’problem.
I apologised most profusely to him and thanked
him for his efforts and offered to come down and
meet him to pay him for his trouble. He would not
dream of it and thanked me for the opportunity of
dealing with the problem. I can tell you now you
do not get many people of that calibre nowadays
and I have every admiration for him and I am sure
that you will all agree me that deeds of this nature
are a rare occurrence and deserve the highest of
praise and they still give you faith in the human
kindness that is still available in this cut throat
world we live in today.
It still remains a great mystery where the bees
came from and went to so quickly, but that is
mother nature for you, full of life’s surprises.

Topsy’s School
S
t Anthony’s House, behind the church, in
Alton, was a bit out-of-date in 1966 when we
bought it. There was no hot water, just a cold
tap over the stone sink in the skullery. No
bathroom. The toilet was a two-seater earth closet
behind the barn in the garden The barn itself was
a good building with a room at the end housing a
small cooking range and a washboiler, with a nice
loft above ... unsafe due to woodworm. We found
a copy of a 1930’s paper and a handbag of tickets
for the church fete in 1938. Inside the house there
was electric light and two gas brackets. Enoch and
Elizabeth Sargeant with their family had lived in
the house since before the Great War; they came
from Derby where Enoch may have had problems
with his business. He was originally a Cheadle
man. There were three children:
The eldest daughter, Beryl Frances Le Doux
Sargeant married a clergyman. The son became
Rev William Sargeant, a chaplain in the army from
1941 to 1945, and later Rural Dean of Eccleshall.
The younger daughter was Selina, known in Alton
as Topsy.
In 1922 the house was bought by Mrs Harry
Burton, sister of Elizabeth, and the Sargeants lived
in the house rent-free. Small windows in the back
wall suggest that originally the house had been
cottages with first-floor bedrooms, but it had been
converted so that the left-hand end was single
storey, with two high rooms.
It was in these rooms that Selina Sargeant
started her school in the late 1930’s. She was
affectionately known as Topsy, a cultured lady; she
had been a governess at Woodhead, Cheadle, well-
read, keen on drama, played the piano, put on
plays, was a member of a concert party, supported
the church etc.. In 2010 we had a letter from the
Romany Society, addressed to the Headteacher.
Fancy that ... the school had been closed for 60
years. Romany did a nature programme for
Children’s Hour on BBC. She taught all subjects,
and Don Burton tells me that when she closed the
school in 1951 he went to Cheadle school where
his maths was about three years ahead. Don says
that they did woodwork ... chopping sticks for the
fire .. also gardening which involved work with
nettles. Topsy even provided meals. The children
took it in turns to answer the door politely, and
when the Rev Mr Powell came they had a prayer
and a hymn in the big room with Topsy on the
piano. Playground for the older children / boys was
on the path by the gates; girls / younger children
down the garden. Don remembers Topsy reading
stories by her niece, a well-known children’s author
called Monica Edwards. “No mistaking Korka”
about a stolen horse, and “The Flying Enterprise”
a sailing boat, were two of them.
Some of the pupils, like Pamela Sargeant, were
related to Topsy. All the children did well. Peter
Fisher became a headteacher.
Fred and Hazel Eyre also attended the school.

Baby Sensory

Baby Superhero’s
I
t’s been a very busy week in the world of Baby
Sensory North Staffs. All of the babies that have
attended classes from 20th to 22nd June have
taken part in a huge nationwide fundraising event
in aid of Tommy’s, a charity that helps give every
baby a chance to a healthy start in life. Tommy’s
raises money to fund research into still-birth,
premature birth and miscarriage and offers help and
support to thousands of families all over the
country.
Every two years Baby Sensory team up with
Tommy’s and host a Sensathon to raise money for
research projects. This year the theme to our
Sensathon was Superhero’s and to raise money we
asked parents to bring babies dressed as Superhero’s
to their regular class that week. Babies and parents
would then take part in a Superhero class, helping
to save the sun from naughty Saby Bensory.
The Superhero class was written especially for
the occasion by Dr. Lin Day,
Baby Sensory boss and all
round Superhero herself.
The activites began with the
babies witnessing Saby
Bensory come into class in a
hot air balloon to take the
light away. The lights in our
room were turned off so our
parents and babies could
see the special lights we had
brought along to class.
Babies love to watch lights,
it really helps to focus their
eyes and encourages their
eyes to work together,
essential for the
development of motor skills
and reading later in life.
Next we needed our
‘Superhero’ Drums to call
all of the Superhero’s together. Using flat hands to
drum encourages babies to have flat hands to clap
with and wave and crawl, all vital developmental
stages.
We then flew up into space, seeing lots of
magical fibre optic lights on the floor and stars
projected onto the ceiling on the way. Our babies
focused on a flying saucer and bubbles falling from
the sky as well as gathering around a starry
parachute with their friends and parents to finish
the activity. Before our exploratory play break we
practised our flying over the fibre optic lights of the
world below us. Our parents held their babies in
‘leopard in a tree’ pose; this is done by placing
babies back to parents tummy, then parents arm
between babies legs whilst supporting their chest
and free arm wrapped around baby for support, this
can really help colicky babies to settle and is great
for giving babies a different view on the world.*
We completed our Superhero challenge by
bringing in 5 yellow large bouncy balloons to
represent the sun, to ‘Here comes the Sun’ by The
Beatles and our class that had been dark since the
first activity once again came into light. Balloon and
ball play are so much fun and can really help with
hand eye co-ordination and provide an introduction
to team games too.
All of our Superhero babies raised over £1100
over the week in Clayton Newcastle under Lyme,
Cheadle and Leek through sponsorship and buying

HUGE amount of £228,169 already raised by Baby
Sensory Superhero Sensathon’s that have taken
place so far and with lots more to be held over the
coming weeks that total is due to rise and rise. I

Down on the Farm

For forty days will rain nae mare”
A
nd as it’s on the 15th of July, when farmers
are maybe wanting to make hay or combine
the early crops, we would prefer it to remain
dry for those occasions. But there is no evidence for
this myth, in fact, since records began there has been
no 40 day period of drought or period of 40 days
continuous rain.
The Anglo-Saxon king has little bearing on the
weather but the jet stream does and it is this that
dictates the summer pattern as it settles down about
now- if it settles to the north of us, then we get
warm, southerly high pressure. However if it settles
below, then we get the Atlantic and arctic colder,
wetter weather dominating.
We often see Pied Wagtails in the yard, bobbing
and wagging their long tails as they bath in the dust,
as they nest in the old buildings and they are clever
at catching flying insects and, so, along with the
Swallows, it makes going outside a hazardous
occupation- they whizz out of the shed doorways
narrowly missing your head and then there are the
babies- swallows lined up on the door and Wagtails
hopping around the yard!
The summer shows have started and a big part
of them are the livestock classes- there is a lot at
stake for the rosette winners-not least from breeding
revenue. There was consternation earlier in the year
when new regulation introduced would have
prohibited cattle from being able to attend!
That highlights the problem farming has- too
many office bound experts deciding on on-farm
policies!
Our days are filled with looking after our
livestock, particularly the younger ones and
preparing for the harvest.
Our younger bull has been kept inside this last
month, so we have a natural end to calving next
year, but he will be going out this month so exciting
times for him- we had to surround his pen with an
electric fence above the top rail to stop him jumping
out (he didn’t twig that it wasn’t actually connected
to the mains) as it’s the only way to keep him where
we want him!
Hopefully our woolsacks have been delivered to
the collecting depot and some payment is wending
its way into our account- cash flow is quite seasonal
in farming and there are long periods when there
might not be anything ready to sell, but there might
be important purchases to be made.
We’ll be checking our lambs for sign of flystrike
and may have sprayed them with repellent to try to
avoid the issue- again, the season and weather
dictates how many times we have to do this.
However, this does mean Ted gets more work,
fetching in the flock and he has grown into a big
dog, but still wont go near the electric fence!

Chocolate Eton Mess Cake
M
y son and his girlfriend came to stay at the
weekend as it was her birthday. I wanted
to make a cake which incorporated her
favourite dessert and chocolate! We had quite a
gathering so I made an extra big cake. We still
managed to finish it off, with just a slice left which
my husband had the next day with custard! It takes
a big longer to prepare as first I made my meringues,
but you could cheat and buy shop bought ones. The
cake doesn’t really need the giant meringues on top
- I had to make these as they are Alice’s favourite.
You could, infact, buy meringue nests and
sprinkle a layer in the middle of the cake and some
on top. So firstly I will give you the recipe for the
Giant Meringues.
Meringues - you will need:-
6 free-range eggs (whites only)
330g caster sugar
1 tbsp cocoa powder
Preheat the oven to 110˚C, fan 90˚C. Line two
baking sheets with greaseproof paper.
Whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks,
then slowly add the caster sugar, whisking until it is
all combined. Gently fold the cocoa powder into the
mixture. Drop large dollops of mixture onto the
baking sheet. This mixture makes about 6
meringues.
Bake in the oven for 2 hours, then turn the oven
off and leave for a further hour before removing.
The cake only really needs about 3 to 4 meringues,
but they do keep in an air tight container.
For the cake you will need:-
2 x 10” cake tins greased and lined
350g light muscovado sugar
4 eggs
8 fl oz milk
8 fl oz sunflower oil
4 tbsp golden syrup or black treacle
350g self raising flour
50g good quality cocoa powder
2 tsp baking powder
For the filling and topping you will need:-
Large carton whipping or double cream
Strawberries
Meringues
Dark chocolate to drizzle over the top of the cake
If you just want to make a 7” cake, just half all
of the ingredients. Preheat the oven to
160˚C. Blend together the sugar, eggs, oil and
golden syrup or treacle.
Add the sieved flour, cocoa powder and baking
powder and mix thoroughly. Divide the mixture
between the prepared tins and bake for
approximately 25mins, until when lightly pressed it
springs back. Leave to cool in the tins and then turn
out onto a wire rack.
Whip your cream and now you are ready to
assemble the cake. Spread half the cream on one
half of your cake then crumble meringue on top of
the cream. Slice half of your strawberries and
arrange on top of the cream. Place the other half of
the cake on top and cover with the remaining cream.
Place a couple of the giant meringues on top along
with whole strawberries and some more crushed
meringue. I then drizzled the cake with melted dark
chocolate.
The cake can be a little tricky to slice, but
absolutely delicious! It was thoroughly enjoyed by
all and a real treat.

Bruce Springsteen, me and a Lark in the
Park
A few weeks ago I walked into a pub in Dublin
and ordered a couple of drinks. Before the barman
had finished pouring them, Bruce Springsteen came
in and sat on the bar stool next to me.“I remember
you,” he said.
All of the above is true. But it’s not the whole
truth. For an explanation of what really happened,
you’ll have to wait. Maybe next month, but if
you’re as obsessed as I am with the world’s greatest
rock performer - for that is what he undoubtedly
is - or even if you simply enjoy celebrity gossip –
and trust me, he’s a bigger star than any of your X-
factor winners or reality TV posers - you will know
the story is worth waiting for.
Lark in the Park goes interactive
In the meantime let me tell you a little about
this year’s Lark in the Park, the free family fun day
in Bramshall Road park on the Saturday of the
August bank holiday weekend. This year it’s on
August 27th and the fun kicks off at 1pm.
Lark in the Park is organised by Uttoxeter
Lions Club and funded by East Staffs Borough
Council. The idea is that it’s an event where most
of the activities are free. That’s to help hard-pressed
families make the most of the dying days of the
school summer holidays.
Without being too complacent, we, the Lions,
think we deliver decent value for money to the
council. After all it’s your money they’re spending,
in the form of council tax. So if we don’t get it
right, you have every right to complain. That’s why
we listen hard to comments and feedback to try to
improve what we deliver.
We’ve noticed that whenever children get
involved in what’s going on in the arena it seems
to bring the most pleasure to them and their
parents. So this year we’ve gone all out for
interactivity and audience involvement.
Circus skills in the arena
That means the main arena will be dominated
by performers from Circus Whiz and a related
outfit called the Games Arena. Alongside our
regular DJ and stadium announcer Matt Goodwin,
who runs games and competitions for youngsters,
they should guarantee that whenever children turn
up during the afternoon there will be something
exciting for them to do.
Circus Whiz, as the name suggests, teach circus
skills in workshop sessions – juggling with balls,
clubs, diablos and devil sticks, stilt-walking and
plate-spinning. The Games Arena provide giant
outdoor versions of indoor games like Snakes and
Ladders and Connect Four.
Like last year there’s also a chance to try the
historic but high-tech Olympic sport of archery.
There will also be jousting, an inflatable rodeo bull,
bungee trampolines, bouncy castles, a mini-ferris
wheel, roundabout and donkey rides.
The afternoon begins with a performance from
the Uttoxeter Town Band and concludes at 4.30
with the duck race along Picknalls Brook. Please
buy a duck race ticket as the proceeds all go to
local causes – and it makes watching the ducks
bobbing along much more fun.
Talk to Vin about your own charity stall
The afternoon is also an opportunity for local
organisations to raise money for their own causes.
You can book a space on the field or a pre-erected
market stall. Just call my Lions pal Vin Bradley on
01889 563078.
Vin seems to know everyone in town, but even
if you haven’t met him, it’s probably time to give
him a call and ask for a stall to help your
organisation make money at Lark in the Park.
Original fund-raising ideas that capture the
imagination of passers-by can make hundreds of
pounds during the afternoon. Tombolas and cake
stalls seem to do well too. I hope Vin will keep his
better suggestions for the Lions stalls. But he can
tell you where the best pitches are and what’s
available.
And the weather’s usually great. I’ve forgotten
how many years we’ve been doing Lark in the Park
but I know there’s almost always been sunshine in
the afternoon, even if it has been bookended by
heavy showers before and after.

to me or I might tell you about the time I met Bruce
Springsteen in a bar in Dublin …
