Catching the Train in Spain
This will probably come as a surprise to
newer and younger ex-UK residents in
southern Spain, but there was a time when
British Rail (now called several different
other things of course) offered a better
service than its Spanish counterpart, Renfe.
The last time I went on a GNER train, this
past summer, it felt like the hottest day
since records started, the air conditioning
had broken down, there was standing room
only although tickets cost a small fortune,
and it was running late. Oh, and there was
nowhere to put any luggage. One of the
dozen people I was squashed against opted
to sit on the toilet seat, but that didn’t make
matters much better for the rest of us.
But I digress. This is about Spanish
trains, in particular the Talgo service, which
runs on time, and has trains which are
clean, comfortable, don’t take standing
passengers, and are well staffed. There are
hostesses to help you find your seat and
provide wheelchairs if necessary with ramps
to connect carriage to platform, and the bar
has smiling service and an attractive menu.
It serves proper coffee, too. When it glides
almost noiselessly away from the station,
headsets are brought round so that you can
watch the video or listen to music. There is
space for suitcases. Announcements are
kept to a minimum. The only thing likely to
annoy is the man across the aisle who
disregards the “no mobile phones” rule and
lets everyone know, at length, how his latest
business meeting went.
As the road safety ad used to say,
“papa, ven en tren”, but please only use
your phone on the platform between
carriages.
READING 3
Spanish Rail Travel: Go for it
It doesn’t seem so long – though in
fact it is decades – since British Rail was
held to be a model of punctuality and
affordable travel, albeit with the worst and
most expensive sandwiches in the world. At
the same time, travelling by train in Spain
was hit-and-miss on the time-keeping front
and the seats were wooden or sticky plastic,
but the other people in your carriage would
happily share their crunchy baguettes and
garlic sausage, and their oranges.
Trains in Spain now come even more
highly recommended. They are punctual,
clean, and quiet. Most passengers comply
with the request, politely announced in two
languages over the tannoy, not to use
mobile phones in the carriage. If two men
sitting together both forget, and
simultaneously carry on loud conversations
with their wives/colleagues about their
estimated time of arrival/activities the night
before, you can remind them and get smiles,
apologies, and promises of good behaviour
for the remainder of the journey. There are
comfortable waiting rooms at stations, fast-
moving queues which the airlines would do
well to note, helpful staff and plenty of them
(ditto) … In short, it is a stress-free,
pleasant experience to travel by train. Just
book early, because the intercity ones do fill
up quickly at peak times.
Another recommendation. It is worth
paying the extra to travel First Class. You
get a meal served to you, (and the carriage
never stinks of garlic), newspapers, drinks,
and one or two days´ free parking at the big
city station which you can claim either
before you go or when you get back - keep
your ticket.

12.5 RACE TO THE SUN
1 Read the introduction to the article, Race to the Sun. Answer the questions with by car,
by train, or by plane.
Which journey do you think was …?
the quickest __________ the most comfortable __________
the cheapest __________ the most convenient __________
Every year thousands of British tourists travel to the south of
France for their summer holiday. But what is the best way to
get there, by car, train, or plane?
A British newspaper sent three of its journalists to find out.
They had to travel from their homes in London to Avignon.
All three travellers set off one Saturday morning in July.
2 You are going to read about the first two journeys, but the
paragraphs are not in the right order. Find the first
paragraph for the plane journey, and then the other three.
Do the same for the train journey. Then compare with a
partner.
The train The plane
1 …… 2 …… 3 …… 4 …… 1 …… 2 …… 3 …… 4 ……
A When I got to security I saw that there was an enormous queue. I began to worry that I
might miss my flight because the boarding limit is 40 minutes before take-off. I had to
run to gate 48 and I arrived completely out of breath.
B I arrived on time! I picked up my suitcase and followed the Exit signs. It was great not to
have to wait ages for my luggage or to worry about getting a bus or taxi to the city
centre.
C We boarded. Because there are no seat numbers on these flights, everybody tries to get
on as quickly as they can. I sat next to a friendly Frenchman. We took off and soon I was
looking down on London. There was no meal, not even coffee, but we landed 10 minutes
ahead of schedule.
D At 4.14 a.m., a taxi picked me up and took me 32 miles to Stansted airport. Although it
was early morning, there was a lot of traffic and I arrived later than I had planned. I took
my luggage to check in and asked for a window seat but the woman said there were no
seat numbers.
E At 7.10 a.m. I arrived at Waterloo station by taxi. It took me just 30 minutes from home.

I bought the papers and walked to the platform. I got on and found my seat. As soon as
we started moving, I went to find the buffet car and had a cup of coffee.
F Just outside the station I looked up and saw the medieval walls of Avignon’s historic city
centre. It was 2.20* in the afternoon and I was just in time for a late lunch! My ticket
cost £65.80, and I gave the journey 8/10 for comfort and 9/10 for convenience.
G I only had to wait twenty minutes for my luggage. Then I walked outside into bright
sunshine and waited for the bus to Avignon, about 40 kilometres away. I didn’t have to
wait long and the bus took 45 minutes. It was only 11.00* and I had the whole day in
front of me. My ticket cost £63, and I gave the journey 5/10 for comfort and 5/10 for
convenience.
H I looked out of the window. Although we were moving at 340 kilometres an hour, the
journey was smooth and relatively quiet. The part where we travelled under the English
Channel took just 22 minutes. Soon I was looking at the fields and farmhouses of France.
The sun was shining. I closed my eyes and went to sleep.

b How long does it take you to get from your house to the beach?

you live?

1 Read this report of a conversation and then write what Janet and Mary actually said:
e.g. Janet I’m going to the cinema …
Janet told Mary she was going to the cinema that evening with her husband. He was
taking her to see Bohemian Rhapsody. They were going to have dinner after the film.
She was afraid there might be a queue so they were going to get to the cinema in good
time to make sure they got in. She said she was very fond of Freddy Mercury. In her
opinion, he was the best singer in the world. She told Mary she would tell her all about
the film when she saw her the day after. Mary hoped they would both enjoy the film.
2 Put this conversation into reported speech:

Mary We’re going on holiday next week. Ian and the children are looking forward to it.
We’re going to drive to the west of England and rent a caravan. Ian needs a rest, but he
doesn’t mind driving, and once we get to the caravan site we’ll just stay there for a
fortnight and put our feet up. The children will have plenty to do on the beach. The only
trouble is that we can’t rely on the weather at this time of year, but we’ll have to take a
chance on it and hope everything will be all right.

Opening

Closing

2 Please help me soon, because all my friends said how much that style of shoe
suited me.
3 I hope to hear from you before I have to write to them.
