2. Music videos demonstrate genre
characteristics
Within this music video there is a scene
where the character comes home drunk
signifying a theme of alcohol. There is
also the theme of sex which we gather
from the lyrics of the song- ‘Dreams of
you f**king me all the time’. The filter is
also black and white demonstrating a
typical characteristic of the
indie/alternative genre. However, this
music video is unique to the others that I
have analysed, as it is narrative based
with no performance from the actual
band.
3. There is a relationship between the lyrics
and visuals
There is a link between the
visuals and the lyrics as the
man is writing the lyrics in the
music video, signifying the
clear link. However, I found
that, that was the only link as
many of the lyrics don't link to
each other it could be hard to
link visuals as well.
4. There is a relationship between the music
and the visuals
There are not many links between
the music and the visuals, as
the music isn't continuous
throughout the music video. This
would make it hard to link the
visuals in with the music.
Straight cut shots have been
used to go with the narrative
theme of the music video to
make it look normal.
5. The demands of the record label will include the
need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist
may develop motifs which recur across their work
The whole band don’t feature in
this music video as it is narrative
based. However, the main singer
of the group come up in the back
ground throughout the video. The
audience would notice this and
recognise the singer and
associate him with the band. This
would advertise the band and sell
their music.
6. There are frequent references to the notion of
looking and particularly voyeuristic (sexual)
treatment of the female body
Even though the lyrics in this song
are about sex, there are no
women in the video. However
women are portrayed in a sexual
light through the lyrics of this
song. Propp’s theory could be
applied to this song as we feel
sorry for this man as he seems
quite sad and low. This means the
audience would see him as the
Princess of the situation.
7. There is an often intertextual reference (to
films, programmes or other music videos)
Ewan McGregor featured in the
music video giving references to
actors and the films he has
been in. As both the main singer
of the band and Ewan
McGregor feature in this music
video Strauss’s binary opposites
can be used to show the
difference between old v young.
8. Whether the video is primarily
performance-based, narrative-based or
concept-based and how element of each
is used in it
This music video is narrative
based as don't see the band
apart from the front singer
who acts in the music video.
As the music video is
narrative based Todorov's
theory can be applied as
there was a clear story line
showing a beginning, middle
and end.
9. Audience feedback
This music video received a mixed range of
feedback off the audience. The negative
feedback may have effected the bands
image however, because there was also a
lot of positive feedback as well this may
have appealed to a different more niche
fan base. The audiences opinion is crucial
to every artist, good or bad, this means
they know what the fan like and dislike.
The mixture of positive and negative
feedback would show that this band may
not have appealed to everyone but it is
still popular and making lots of money.
