2. At the age of twelve I learned firsthand about Autism
when my brother Dee was diagnosed. While I was a
busy young man in school, playing baseball and
helping my mother (Mama), Dee’s life was taking a
different path. Mama was dedicated to caring,
protecting and advocating for her child with special
needs and did so with consistency and grace.
Mama’s commitment made a lasting impression.
Once I became a professional baseball player, it
became clear to me how many parents were
managing a child with Autism and all of its life alter-
ing effects with far fewer resources than our family.
As participants in my brother’s lifelong journey, my
wife Wyndee and I realized our purpose and began
the dream of assisting families with much needed
services. Services that are a fundamental right for
their special needs child.
As we began our journey, we learned that children
with Autism in communities of color often fall
between the cracks. Studies demonstrate that these
children are often diagnosed later than their
non-minority peers, misdiagnosed at a higher rate
than mainstream counterparts, labeled emotionally
disturbed and are often over medicated. Many are
denied insurance benefits, medical care and
treatment. Because of these challenges, they are
unable to realize and actualize their fundamental
right to an education and a “hereafter”.
The Reggie Sanders Foundation strives to advance
social justice, equality and dignity for all children
with special needs and disabilities. It is our firm
belief that working together we will find all the
pieces of the puzzle.
By working with charities and community groups
that share this mission; we can meet the challenge
of building a community where everyone is offered
the opportunity to reach their full potential. The
Reggie Sanders Foundation believes this is both
our public duty and personal responsibility. Please
join us in this pursuit –
“You have to do, to be!”
“It is our firm belief that working
together, we will find all of the pieces of
the puzzle.”
It all started with a purpose and a dream...
3. AUTISM PREVALENCE RATE
National
The Centers for Disease Control released the latest autism prevalence rates. These statistics are based on 2012 data.
Researchers reviewed both the health and educational data for the last 8 years from 11 states across the nation. Based on their
research, the CDC announced the autism prevalence rate at 1 in 68. This is nearly a 30% increase over the previous rate of 1 in
88 that was based on 2010 data. Boys continue to be affected by autism at much greater rates than girls. For boys, an estimated 1
in 42 has an autism spectrum disorder, while for girls the rate is 1 in 189. The research also showed that almost 50% of those with
autism have average or above-average intelligence.
