Who is that? What time is the meeting?
Use of simple present of TO BE
The principal use of the simple present is to refer to an action or event that
takes place habitually, but with the verb "to be" the simple present tense also
refers to a present or general state, whether temporary, permanent or
habitual.
I am happy. She is helpful.
The verb “to be” in the simple present can be also used to refer to something
that is true at the present moment.
She is 20 years old. He is a student.
Indefinite articles a and an
Before consonants: Before vowels:
•a boy
•a school
•a girl
•an aunt
•an old school
•an American girl
Mind the pronunciation of the following word:
The first sound we speak is [j], so we use
a → a unit
The first sound we speak is [ʌ], so we use an
→ an hour
The indefinite article a is the same for all genders.
a boy a girl a cat
The indefinite article has no plural form.
a boy → boys
We use an if the following word starts with a spoken vowel.
The definite article the
It's used when the speaker talks about a specific object that both the person
speaking and the listener know.
The car over there is fast.
The president of the United States is giving a speech tonight.
When we speak of something or someone for the first time we use a or an,
the next time we repeat that object we use the definite article the.
I live in a house. The house is quite old and has four bedrooms.
I ate in a Chinese restaurant. The restaurant was very good.
