Over a quarter of adults in New York State are obese, and another third are overweight. Obesity rates have increased over time, from 16% in 1997 to over 27% in 2018. Certain groups have higher obesity rates, such as non-Hispanic black and Hispanic adults, those with lower incomes, and disabled individuals. Obesity among children has also tripled over the past three decades, with a third of New York children now overweight or obese. Obesity rates vary regionally within New York State.

2. Overweight and Obesity in
New York State BRFSS 2016
 More than one-quarter (25.5%) of adults in New York State
(NYS) are obese and another 35.3% are overweight, an
estimated 8.5 million residents.
 The prevalence of obesity in NYS is higher among adults who
are non-Hispanic black or Hispanic (33.8% and 29.8%,
respectively), earn an annual household income less than
$25,000 (30.5%), are currently living with disability (38.1%),
and those who live in the region outside of New York City
(27.4%).
 The prevalence of obesity is less among adults with a college
degree (18.5%).

• The percentage of New York State adults who are overweight
or obese increased from 42% in 1997 to 62.7% in 2018.
• The percentage of New York State adults who are obese
increased from 16% in 1997 to 27.6% in 2018.
• Obesity among children and adolescents has tripled over the
past three decades. Currently, a third of New York's children
are obese or overweight.

5. NYS Childhood Overweight and
Obesity
 Declining Obesity Among 2- to 4-year-olds: In New
York, obesity rates declined among 2- to 4-year-olds
enrolled in WIC from 2010 to 2014. The rate of obesity
dropped from 16.1% to 14.3%.
 New York City reported a 5.5 percent decline in obesity
among students in grades K-8 from 2006-07 to 2010-11.

6. Monroe County Obesity Rates
• 59.3% of adults are overweight or obese in 2016
• Males were more likely to be overweight than females
but there was no difference in rate of obesity by gender.
• African Americans and Latinos were more likely to be
obese and less likely to be overweight when compared
to whites and non-Latinos.

7. Monroe County Obesity Rates
for Children 2013-2015
 14.5% of children age 2-10 are obese and another 15.3%
are overweight.
 17% of adolescents ages 11-18 are obese and another
16.7% are overweight.
 Obesity and overweight are the second leading cause
of preventable death and are a contributing factor to
both cancer and heart disease, consistently the leading
causes of death for Monroe County.
