2. RELIGION AND BELIEF SYSTEM
• The religion is a belief system that relates humanity to the transcendental, and
just like culture, it has its own set of rules, norms, values, and rituals, which are
generally accepted by its group of believers. To better understand the concept,
we must first trace the origin of the term. The word religion comes from the
latin word religionem which means “respect for what is sacred, reverence for the
gods”. It also comes from the latin word re which means again and ligare which
means to connect. Put together, re–ligare therefore means “to reconnect”, in this
sense, to the to the divine, the sacred, the supernatural, and the spiritual.
According to Emile Durkheim, “Religion answers all the unanswered questions
of human existence.” Most of the things that human reason cannot comprehend
as of the moment can find answers in transcendental ideas such as religion.

3. WHAT IS RELIGION AND BELIEF?
• Belief is a state of the mind when we consider something true even
though we are not 100% sure or able to prove it. Everybody has beliefs
about life and the world they experience. Mutually supportive beliefs
may form belief systems, which may be religious, philosophical or
ideological.
• Religions are belief systems that relate humanity to spirituality.
• Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that
relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values. Many religions
have narratives, symbols, traditions and sacred histories that are intended to
give meaning to life or to explain the origin of life.

4. EXAMPLE OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS.
• Ang Itim na Nazareno na kilalá rin bílang Poong Hesus Nazareno (Espanyol:
Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno) ay ang gataong imahen ni Hesus na may
pasan-pasan na krus na nakalagak sa Simbahan ng Quiapo sa Maynila,
Pilipinas mula pa noong 1787.[1] Ito ay gawa sa maitim na kahoy at
nakabihis ng maroon na bata. Sinasabing nasunog ito sa galeong sinasakyan
nito mula Mexico patungong Maynila ngunit walang katiyakan ang sanhi ng
itim nitong kulay at pawang mga pagpapalagay lámang noong nagkaroon
ng Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig ay naputol ang totoong kamay nito sa
kanan ngayon ay itinago ito sa loob ng simbahan.

6. • Holy Week in the Philippines (Filipino: Mahal na Araw; Spanish: Semana
Santa) is a significant religious observance for the country's Catholic
majority, the Iglesia Filipina Independiente or the Philippine Independent
Church and most Protestant groups. One of the few majority Christian
countries in Asia, Catholics make up 80 percent of the population, and the
Church is one of the country's dominant sociopolitical forces.
• The solemn celebration begins on Friday of Sorrows turning to Palm
Sunday and continues on through to Easter Sunday. Many communities
observe Spanish-influenced Catholic rituals such as processions, that have
been syncretised with elements of precolonial beliefs.

7. EXAMPLES OF FILIPINO RELIGION.
• Religion in the Philippines is marked by a majority of people being
adherents of the Christian faith. At least 88% of the population is Christian;
about 79% belong to the Catholic Church while about 9% belong
to Protestantism, Orthodoxy, Restorationist and Independent
Catholicism and other denominations such as Iglesia Filipina
Independiente, Iglesia ni Cristo, Seventh-day Adventist Church, Apostolic
Catholic Church, United Church of Christ in the Philippines, Members
Church of God International (MCGI) and Pentecostals. Officially, the
Philippines is a secular nation, with
the Constitution guaranteeing separation of church and state, and requiring
the government to respect all religious beliefs equally.
