Struggling with Soliloquy…..
Submitted by Nawrin Akhtar Student of Notre Dame University Bangladesh.
The Translated Language (TL) of the text entitled to ‘Struggling with Soliloquy’, originally written
by Sadik Haque and translated by Ahmed Tahsin Shams is a target-oriented functional translation
because it carries “ language –pair restricted area” (The Name and Nature of Translation Studies
by James S. Holmes), “cultural –pair restricted ( Holmes). Thereby it is “domesticated” (‘The
Hermeneutic Motion’ by George Steiner) to some extent. The source language (SL) went through
“naturalization” (Steiner) to a great extent because the context of the original text is not “time and
place restricted” (Holmes).
In the first stanza line, one translator uses “Thames River” in the place of “Sitalakkhya” and
“Lilies” in the place of ‘Krishnochura’. Because the word ‘Sitalakkhya’ and’ Krishnochura’ are
used as a metaphor. The writer gives a metaphorical image. Translator changes the context.
According to Holmes function oriented mainly focus on context. The translator translates it based
on target language context.
In the second line, translator keeps SL effect in translation. In “Pages after pages, puffs after puffs
“the letter P repeats. Which follows the literary device alliteration and gives the audience a poetic
rhythm. At the last of the second line, translator adds more words. That’s are “all are in their ways
making it high”. It is fidelity (Benjamin). It maintains the SL effect.
In the translation, third and fourth line are joined together where SL are individual. The 4th line
“Whispered the names … … … Shakespeare to Beckett……. to Golam Ajom” is cultural –pair
and language pair (Holmes). TL talks about from 19th-century poet to postmodern poet, artist,
musician and also a politician. In SL writers talk about Guru (master) and expand all the
professional. Where Shakespeare, Beckett, Dali, Kostabi, Pink Floyd, Lalon, Colonel Taher and
Golam Ajom all are the master for the TL readers. So that translator changed it based on a cultural
pair (Holmes) and keeps the number 99. Because it is a religious number for all culture.
And in TL the last line of first stanza translator add the word ‘Om’. And it is an allusion and it’s
also “foreignized” because the TL is culture oriented.
In TL second stanza is divided into two paragraph. According to Steiner, it is called an invasion.
In the first paragraph, translator keeps the SL structure. And in the 2nd paragraph is restitute new
lines. Here translator alliterates the word “nothing” and skip the word “ati ati goja, dsta dista
kagoj” because of cultural difference (Holmes).
In the last stanza of TL added an optional line “pin drop silence for a while” "incorporated"
(Steiner) by structurally changing the sentence construction.
