National Enterprise Network welcomed visitors to their annual conference held in a vibrant and lively hotel overlooking Manchester’s vivacious city centre on Wednesday 19th September 2012 The annual conference is an event that brings people together for mutual support, education and inspiration. This year’s conference was exceptionally important to National Enterprise Network because it also celebrated 20 years of the company’s dedication in representing members and supporting the development of enterprise.

Supply and demand rising. • A new service for growth potential firms, Growth Accelerator - >600 firms • Specialist Catapult Centres • ‘City Deals’ • 2 Rounds of Regional Growth Funding, Round 3 underway • LEPs and Enterprise Zones established • Tax incentives for business investment and growth • Stimulants to business lending – e.g. NLGS now FFL, reduced Corporation Tax, SEIS

What difference is this making and where are the gaps? • Economy not growing – Eurozone • Institutional changes - too early to tell but signs promising • Changes need to bed in and to be driven hard to deliver outcomes • Further changes in view – new .GOV digital platform • New Industrial strategy • More ‘Core Cities’ to be announced

What might the future hold? • New Ministers in BIS - their views not yet clear • Ongoing tension - between local support to business and affordability coming from economies of scale • Rationing – who gets support and why? • How to marry national objectives with local perspectives? • Need to strengthen, support and resource LEPs • Can we solve the fundamental underlying cultural problems in business support?
