6. Artist’s Statement
Art is my sanity. It keeps such significant company as ox-
ygen, water, and nutrients in that without it I may cease
to exist. My mind sketches a hundred ideas for a hundred
paintings while I venture down a busy thoroughfare, then
tortures me until I pour the oddity of the tilted couple near
the corner bookstore on to a piece of paper. Art urges me
to be a modern day story-teller, gives me the freedom to
fantasize like a child or awestruck lover, collects a his-
tory in a visual journal of socially uncensored truths. It
instructs me to ignore proper behavior, to speak with the
loose lips of an 80 year old woman who no longer cares
who thinks what, and to notice the significance of every
day life. Art hands me gestural trees silhouetted against
canvas skies where the sun squeezes into the earth and
I am sane for another day.

62. Sketchbook Drawings
The most economical way to own original art is to purchase sketch-
book drawings. Many artist hold their sketchbooks and working
drawings close. Nathan allows you in. Some of Nathan’s favorite
pieces are straight from his drawing pad. These images retain the
energy and immediacy of places along life’s journey. Many times
the drawings are the spark of an idea that ultimately takes the
shape and scale of larger framed work. The sketches allow you to
own something that stands on its own as well as inspires bigger
ideas.
