George I of
Great Britain
28 May 1660 – 11 June 1727
from 1 August 1714 until his death
George was King of:
Great Britain
Ireland
And ruler of the Duchy and Electorate of
Brunswick-Lüneburg (Hanover) in the Holy Roman
Empire from 1698.
What happend with George???
He remained unpopular in England
throughout his life, because of his
inability to speak English . George
was succeeded by his son, George
Augustus, who took the throne as
George II
George
He did not speak English so
Walpole had to brush up his Latin in
order to converse with the King and
help him by translating what people
in the Parliament said.
WHO WAS
WALPOLE????
He has been called
the first prime
minister of Britain.
He began his political career
as representative of “pocket”
boroughs.
His ascendancy coincided with the decline of
the political power of the monarchy and
George became less and less involved in
government.
Politics was regarded as a lucrative profession.
WALPOLE
was one of the greatest
politicians in British history. He
played a significant role in
sustaining the Whig party,
safeguarding the Hanoverian
succession
Rotten and Pocket
boroughs
The representative of a
pocket borough was
often the man who owned
the land, and for this
reason they were also
referred to as
proprietarial boroughs
Rotten boroughs were
where fathers passed on
constituencies to their sons
as if they were personal
property.
Rotten had very few voters
yet was represented in
Parliament
Fall of Walpole
At the biginning of 1742
Walpole gave up the hopeless
attempt to keep the control of
british policy.
The Opposition forced Walpole
to resign the power
