RING ROAD
 A ring road is a road or the series of
connected road encircling a town or
city.
As per American and European , the
name Beltline, circumferential
(high)way, Loop or Orbital are calling
name after ring road.
 It is used for linkage nodes to enter
urban center.

RING ROAD IN KATHMANDU
• Network of nodes (Kalanki-Satdobato-
Koteshwor-Chabihil-Balaju&Kalanki) is our
Ring Road constructed around 35 years ago.
• It has 2 lane capacity with 27 km in orbital
length.
• Being Capital of country, the density of roads
is increasing with increased settlement &
urbanization.
• Improvement and widening process are
todays needs for ring road.

INNER RING ROAD & PROPOSED ORR KATHMANDU VALLEY
HISTORY OF ORR in KATHMANDU
1/3/2016 8
On transport perspective
 JICA recommended transportation route linking Lubhu
to Gokarna in 1993.
 GoN in F.Y. 2004-’05 decided to launch the ORRDP
based on the feasibility study carried out by NEPECON
in 2000.
On urban development perspective
 most people are ambitious & strongly advocated for
immediate implementation of this project beside the
situation of the Kathmandu valley during yesterdays.
 Now MoUD acting land Polling & trying to implement the
project construction by means of donor agencies.
OBJECTIVES OF OUTER RING ROADS
De congest metropolitan area and inner ring
road to meet future demand
Decentralization of business activities to the
peripheral areas through development of new
'business centers' with mixed land use system
Provide orbital linkage to radial arterial roads
Connect urban nodes
Infrastructure development at different nodal
points
Destruction of traditional settlements in the
rural areas including Intensification of earthquake
vulnerability

AIM of ORR
• To develop plan city by means of land pooling
system from land owner, which fixed the right of
way and well planning on either sides of ORR.
1/3/2016 10
VISION of ORR
• To develop Kathmandu as a Capital of country, by
means of urbanization model with services and
facilities of ORR.
MISSION of ORR
• To construct ORR in given time frame with social
and environment friendly having higher degree of
technology.
Some Figures
• Feasibility of Proposed road length = 71.93≈72.00 Km
• Various dilemmas in certain section for fixing centerlines.
So actual length may decreases up to=67.0 Km
• Overlap existing road(Araniko Highway, Thimi to
Jagate)=3.0Km
• Proposed tunneling
1.at Nagarjun=400.0m
2. at White Gumba ≈900.0m
• Right of way =50.0 m
• Planning Area either side of ORR=250.0m
(with infra. of radial roads, drainage facilities, planning of
land by land pooling of owner @ 1/3 missing themselves)
1/3/2016 11
• Alignment along Kathmandu=35.08 Km
-(intersect 22 local bodies with 2
municipality)
• Alignment along Bhaktapur =21.05 Km
-(intersect 13 local bodies with 2
municipality)
• Alignment along Lalitpur = 15.80 Km
-(intersect 9 local bodies )
• Design period =20 years

• To network Southern & Eastern entry points of
valley by express Highway.
• To hold high density of traffic movement inside
valley by slow lanes.
• To act as boarder between rural and urban areas of
Valley
• To mitigate uncontrolled settlements between urban
and rural areas.
• To network radial roads up to core areas.
• To divert business activities from core to peripheral
area
1/3/2016 19
WHY ORR ??
HOW ORR HELPS TO DEVELOPED URBAN
??
• It served as transport designed city
with orbital network.
• Being orbital as an ideal network for
valley, then proposed radial and
arterial connection to the nodes are
easier to link.
• Act as a Transport Hub of the country
for networking.
1/3/2016 20
WHO ARE BENEFICIARIES??
 All local & urban area officials could save time to
reach destination.
 Employment opportunity gain by local people from
decentralization based on production firms and
industrial needs.
 A higher Population among 2.517 million (CBS 2011)
from valley districts and peoples immerging from
outside valley could achieved their principal need.
 People earned from tourism around the peaks of
valley & directly involves on their livelihood
improvement plan.

  • 6. RING ROAD IN KATHMANDU • Network of nodes (Kalanki-Satdobato- Koteshwor-Chabihil-Balaju&Kalanki) is our Ring Road constructed around 35 years ago. • It has 2 lane capacity with 27 km in orbital length. • Being Capital of country, the density of roads is increasing with increased settlement & urbanization. • Improvement and widening process are todays needs for ring road. 1/3/2016 6
  • 7. 1/3/2016 7 INNER RING ROAD & PROPOSED ORR KATHMANDU VALLEY
  • 8. HISTORY OF ORR in KATHMANDU 1/3/2016 8 On transport perspective  JICA recommended transportation route linking Lubhu to Gokarna in 1993.  GoN in F.Y. 2004-’05 decided to launch the ORRDP based on the feasibility study carried out by NEPECON in 2000. On urban development perspective  most people are ambitious & strongly advocated for immediate implementation of this project beside the situation of the Kathmandu valley during yesterdays.  Now MoUD acting land Polling & trying to implement the project construction by means of donor agencies.
  • 9. OBJECTIVES OF OUTER RING ROADS De congest metropolitan area and inner ring road to meet future demand Decentralization of business activities to the peripheral areas through development of new 'business centers' with mixed land use system Provide orbital linkage to radial arterial roads Connect urban nodes Infrastructure development at different nodal points Destruction of traditional settlements in the rural areas including Intensification of earthquake vulnerability 1/3/2016 9
  • 10. AIM of ORR • To develop plan city by means of land pooling system from land owner, which fixed the right of way and well planning on either sides of ORR. 1/3/2016 10 VISION of ORR • To develop Kathmandu as a Capital of country, by means of urbanization model with services and facilities of ORR. MISSION of ORR • To construct ORR in given time frame with social and environment friendly having higher degree of technology.
  • 11. Some Figures • Feasibility of Proposed road length = 71.93≈72.00 Km • Various dilemmas in certain section for fixing centerlines. So actual length may decreases up to=67.0 Km • Overlap existing road(Araniko Highway, Thimi to Jagate)=3.0Km • Proposed tunneling 1.at Nagarjun=400.0m 2. at White Gumba ≈900.0m • Right of way =50.0 m • Planning Area either side of ORR=250.0m (with infra. of radial roads, drainage facilities, planning of land by land pooling of owner @ 1/3 missing themselves) 1/3/2016 11
  • 12. • Alignment along Kathmandu=35.08 Km -(intersect 22 local bodies with 2 municipality) • Alignment along Bhaktapur =21.05 Km -(intersect 13 local bodies with 2 municipality) • Alignment along Lalitpur = 15.80 Km -(intersect 9 local bodies ) • Design period =20 years 1/3/2016 12 ………contd

  • 19. • To network Southern & Eastern entry points of valley by express Highway. • To hold high density of traffic movement inside valley by slow lanes. • To act as boarder between rural and urban areas of Valley • To mitigate uncontrolled settlements between urban and rural areas. • To network radial roads up to core areas. • To divert business activities from core to peripheral area 1/3/2016 19 WHY ORR ??
  • 20. HOW ORR HELPS TO DEVELOPED URBAN ?? • It served as transport designed city with orbital network. • Being orbital as an ideal network for valley, then proposed radial and arterial connection to the nodes are easier to link. • Act as a Transport Hub of the country for networking. 1/3/2016 20
  • 21. WHO ARE BENEFICIARIES??  All local & urban area officials could save time to reach destination.  Employment opportunity gain by local people from decentralization based on production firms and industrial needs.  A higher Population among 2.517 million (CBS 2011) from valley districts and peoples immerging from outside valley could achieved their principal need.  People earned from tourism around the peaks of valley & directly involves on their livelihood improvement plan. 1/3/2016 21
