2. W
hat does it mean to be a woman in today’s
world? Who says so? Does it matter
what other people think? Out of Sterno,
a zany comedy opening June 25 at Gloucester Stage,
examines all of these questions and more as it takes
an uproariously clever look at the influences that
shape our own self-images.
Out of Sterno tells the story of Dotty, who lives a
kind of reverse Alice-in-Wonderland existence in the
colorful and cartoon-like apartment she shares with
her husband Hamel. Naïve, trusting, and completely
in love, she spends her days watching video reenact-
ments of the day they first met. A mysterious phone
call prompts her to venture into the city of Sterno,
where she encounters a bevy of characters on a quest
to find out what it means to be a “real woman.”
“The journey of this play is a breathless roller coaster of
self-discovery for Dotty, a woman helplessly in love with
her husband,” says Paula Plum, who directs the show.
“The ride is hair-raising and hilarious but also deeply
moving as Dotty discovers the truth about being a ‘real
woman’ on her own terms.”
“Out of Sterno will be a unique play to produce due to
the combination of fun technical elements,” says Interim
Artistic Director Robert Walsh. “It will definitely keep us
on our toes. If you like Lewis Carroll, Pee Wee Herman,
Saturday Night Live, and everything in between, you’ll
love this show.”
Out of Sterno at Gloucester Stage will have you losing
your breath from hysterical laughter one minute to
holding your breath from heartbreak the next. “I think,
at its best, theater gets a whole lot of people together
in a room to look at what it is to be human and to
experience it together. It’s as close as I come to a
religious experience,” says playwright Laufer, who was
once a stand-up comedian. “Oh, and funny. My plays
are funny. I really like funny.” Gs

Laufer notes,
“My plays are
generally about
things that
perplex me.
And worry me.
And make me
feel a little lost.
So I need to dive
in and get dirty
in the confusion.”

“Like my papa always said,
‘Don’t leave the house’.”
Where does your self-image
start? And does it end there? The
world gives women a mixed bag
of messages, and coming to terms
with who you are may leave you
a little dotty.
