Nancy Berger is an outstanding English teacher and an exceptional individual. We worked together when she was the
Lead Teacher for the Tonawanda High School Alternative Education Program at Tonawanda High School. I am a
counselor at the school, and was the counselor for the Alternative Education Program. It is my pleasure to write this
recommendation letter on her behalf.
As a teacher, Nancy taught ninth and tenth grade English to at-risk students, many of whom had failed multiple times. She
had an outstanding passing rate and equally as important, an excellent relationship with her students. Her highly
motivated and positively charged personality along with her patience and sensitivity enabled her students to overcome
many personal obstacles and obtain an education. She was able to reach and touch the lives of many students.
As the Lead Teacher on the alternative team, she was responsible for developing and overseeing the incipient program. It
was evident that her strong leadership skills, focus and good-natured personality enabled her to guide her team of peers.
Her creative nature, passionate drive and educational philosophies helped to design the highly successful program that
was utilized by Tonawanda for many years. She was respected by her students and peers alike. Parents were also
grateful for her frequent communication with them.
Nancy’s knowledge of the subject was evident as I observed her many times working with our students. The lessons were
well planned and creatively delivered. Her love of the subject was evident as she was able to engage her students in a
piece of literature or a writing assignment. In my opinion, her method of teaching would be successful in both mainstream
and alternative education positions.
Nancy participated on several school committees. She was a member of the Student Support Team (SST) and the
Diversity Committee. On both, her input was valuable. On the SST she helped to set up and implement action plans for
struggling mainstream and alternative students. On the Diversity Committee she assisted with programs and educational
opportunities for the students to experience life from another perspective. Nancy also participated in countless parent
teacher conferences held on an ongoing basis.
