Deep neural networks have shown state-of-the-art results in a variety of vision tasks. Although accurate, most of these deep neural networks are computationally intensive, creating challenges for embedded devices. In this talk, Park provides several ideas and insights on how to design deep neural network architectures small enough for embedded deployment. He also explores how to further reduce the processing load by adopting simple but effective compression and quantization techniques. He shows a set of practical applications, such as face recognition, facial attribute classification, and person detection, which can be run in near real-time without any heavy GPU or dedicated DSP and without losing accuracy.

Docker Enterprise got a big upgrade this year with Calico 3.5 for its Kubernetes networking! One of the most exciting new features is the ability to build Zero Trust Kubernetes networks with Calico Application Layer Policy in concert with Istio service mesh. Zero Trust networking is a way to build distributed applications such that they maintain security, even when containers, or the network itself, is compromised. Starting with Docker Enterprise, they will demonstrate some common network attacks such as IP address spoofing and certificate exfiltration, then demonstrate building a Zero Trust network (by installing Istio and Application Layer Policies) for the application. They will show how this Zero Trust network repels all the demonstrated attack strategies and explain how to build and maintain a Zero Trust network for your own applications.

Recent progress in machine learning algorithms has been meteoric. Yet their implementation in real-world embedded applications crawls at a snail’s pace, in large part due to inconsistent and inefficient software architectures. In this session, Agrawal introduces the concept of software containerization, explains how it works, and examines how a containerized deployment methodology at the edge can circumvent barriers that currently hinder the deployment of new and improved ML algorithms. He also explores the trade-offs and limitations of using containerization, and shows how his company has used containerization to enable new capabilities like mask detection and license plate recognition to be quickly deployed on to existing cameras.

With AWS and Intel, you can implement an IoT solution quickly and with minimal upfront investments, seamless connectivity, and deliver enhanced security from device to network to cloud, then use AWS Big Data services to drive business insight. In this workshop you will learn how to use the Amazon Alexa Skills Kit SDK along with the Windriver Helix Device Cloud API to teach Alexa - how to pass requests and data between Alexa and an Intel IoT Gateway based solution - how to provision IoT edge devices, sensors and smart switches as part of an End-to-End SmartHome solution. We will guide you through the scripting and code snippets required to do this. We will provide you with a real live experience of making Amazon Alexa and Windriver Helix Device Cloud device management work together and testing the flexible Smart Home reference framework. The workshop is based on a ready-to-deploy smart home and energy monitoring solution for which Enel partnered with Intel and AWS to realize real energy cost savings and quality of home life improvements for their customers. Enel is an Italian utility company serving over sixty million households. They turned to Intel because it delivers an ecosystem of suppliers and unmatched security and data ingestion scalability from edge to AWS cloud.

Deep learning-based computer vision models have gained traction in applications requiring object detection, thanks to their accuracy and flexibility. For deployment on low-power hardware, single-shot detection (SSD) models are attractive due to their speed when operating on inputs with small spatial dimensions. The key challenge in creating efficient embedded implementations of SSD is not in the feature extraction module, but rather is due to the non-linear bottleneck in the detection stage, which does not lend itself to parallelization. This hinders the ability to lower the processing time per frame, even with custom hardware. Guttmann describes in detail a data-centric optimization approach to SSD. The approach drastically lowers the number of priors (“anchors”) needed for the detection, and thus linearly decreases time spent on this costly part of the computation. Thus, specialized processors and custom hardware may be better utilized, yielding higher performance and lower latency regardless of the specific hardware used.

In this talk, you’ll hear about the new Hailo-15 AI vision processor family, specifically designed to empower smart cameras with unprecedented AI capabilities. Iarovici explains how the Hailo-15 family of processors—with performance ranging from 7 to 20 tera operations per second—allows cameras to carry out significantly more video analytics at once, running several AI tasks in parallel. Iarovici shows how Hailo-15 processors make it possible to perform faster detection at high resolution, enabling identification of smaller and more distant objects with higher accuracy and fewer false alarms. He also explores how the elevated AI performance of these processors can be utilized for video enhancement, such as improved low-light video quality, video stabilization and high dynamic range imaging. And he shows how Hailo is pioneering the use of vision-based transformers for real-time object detection in cameras.

Rather than imposing a proprietary development environment, the Vitis platform plugs into common software developer tools and utilizes a rich set of optimized open source libraries, enabling developers to focus on their algorithms. Vitis is separate to the Vivado Design Suite, which will still be supported for those who want to program using hardware code, but Vitis can also boost the productivity of hardware developers by packaging hardware modules as software-callable functions. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.
