Our School Demographics
• Our school population is a direct reflection of
the Flatbush community. Most of our students are
first generation immigrants.
• Almost half our students are from families with
income below the poverty line and consequently
qualify for free or reduced cost lunch.

College Now
College Now is CUNY’s largest collaborative
program with the New York City secondary public
school system. The program offers dual
enrollment and college-readiness programs in
more than 350 NYC high schools and enrolls close
to 20,000 students annually. In all, there are
seventeen campus-based College Now programs
which are overseen by a central office. Although
the program varies from school to school and
campus to campus, they are similar in terms of
overall structure, implementation and goals.

Medgar Evers
Educational Talent Search Program
The Educational Talent Search Program was developed through the Higher
Education Act of 1965. The Program identifies low-income and first-generation
college students to provide them with encouragement, support and
assistance.
The mission of Talent Search is, specifically, to identify and encourage eligible
youth in grades six through twelve, and out-of-school youth up to the age of
27, to finish high school and enroll in post-secondary education.
Services include small group tutoring, academic and personal counseling,
college campus tours, test taking, time management skills training and
counseling, workplace tours and job shadowing opportunities.

The Selective Corporate Internship Program (SCIP) is
a six-week program designed to provide a corporate
experience for rising high school juniors and seniors.
During the internship, the students meet with
corporate executives from leading companies,
attend corporate site visits, sharpen their technical
and writing skills, learn about business etiquette,
and much more. SCIP offers a rare inside view of
corporate America. Participants develop lifelong
friendships and the skills and confidence necessary
to fulfill their potential.

The JANY Job ShadowProgram provides students with an up-close look at the working world and shows them how the skills they learn in school are put to use in the workplace. Students begin to understand the day-to-day activities of prominent business and senior level leaders and the various staff positions that support them, by spending a day in the workplace observing and asking questions.
Volunteers at Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft LLP with students during Junior Achievement University. The JANY University program provides students with the tools to successfully navigate the path from high school to college and beyond. It provides practical life-planning, college readiness, career exploration, and networking opportunities to high school students and exposes them to professional role models. Students learn to research and road-map their own personal vision plan to help them successfully complete the high school to college transition.
In the High School Heroes Program, high school students from the local community serve as powerful role models for younger children. They exemplify the importance of staying in school and giving back to their communities. All Heroes attend at least one training session and are given time to study their Junior Achievement teaching materials well in advance of the event. Heroes work in teams to teach the K–5th grade classes, demonstrating teamwork to the elementary school students. The Heroes are selected by their teachers based on their sense of commitment to school and the success of the program, class participation, behavior, and a desire to mentor younger students.
Two students at Accenture Junior Achievement International Women’s Day Resume Writing Workshop. After students viewed a presentation on resume writing , they applied their newly acquired skills and knowledge to create or improve their resumes with the help of Accenture staff volunteers.
During “Get Reel With Your Dreams” students chatted with Sean Ringgold is an American actor and former bodyguard from Rockaway Beach, Queens, New York. He is best known for his roles as Shaun Evans on the ABC daytime drama One Life to Live, and as Suge Knight in the Notorious B.I.G. biopic Notorious.
Exploring Learning for Life Career Education ProgramDeveloped by The Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America, Exploring is a school-to-career and school-to-higher education program that delivers worksite-based learning experiences. Through this program, students learn about careers at companies, governmental agencies and community-based organizations. The program at each company, agency, and organization is based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, service learning, character education, and leadership experience. At the culmination of the six-week program, Exploring Careers in Theatre at the Signature Theater, AOHT students had a discussion session with Ruben Santiago - Hudson, who inspired them with his journey from a foster home in Lackawanna to international acclaim. He is an American actor and playwright, who has won national awards for his work in both areas. From 2009 to 2011, he played Captain Roy Montgomery in ABC's Castle. They then viewed the play “My Children, MY Africa,” which is directed by Mr. Santiago.
Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere. There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success
Toastmaster participants also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop skills related to timekeeping, grammar and parliamentary procedure.
Financial Literacy Certification Program: Most students drop out of college not because of academic failure but because of personal debt and the fastest growing group filing personal bankruptcy is young people ages 18 to 25. Ww!se’s Financial Literacy Certification Program (FLCP) addresses the urgent need for financial literacy and education. The program provides high school students with access to financial education and the opportunity to become certified financially literate. AOHT students participate in this program and have scored 100 percent, even as freshmen!
Business Explorers arrived at Camp Keowa on July 11th for a four day training session at the Greater New York Councils' Ten Mile River Camp in Narrowsburg, NY to learn how to become thriving business professionals while enjoying the camp grounds.With the help of the AT&T Business Academy, and volunteers from American Management Association, the Explorers were taught the essential skills and tools needed to succeed in the business world. This included an introduction to management, how to become a leader, strategic planning, business writing, negotiation, communication and presentation skills.Thanks to AT&T and AMA, the Explorers were given an opportunity to meet and learn with other students and business professionals through this interactive and hands-on educational experience.
The fact is, non-profit organizations need you more than you need them! They simply cannot exist without people to whom they can provide services. Seek out the non-profits in your area and let them know that you want to take advantage of their services. For your part, you will need to be consistent and ensure that your student are consistent and committed. Do not assume that students will attend a program simply because it is good for them; they often do not realize or appreciate the value of these opportunities. Encourage them to attend, force them is you must, and accompany them when possible.
