HISTORY OF MOOCs
The history of the MOOC can be traced back to a Proto-MOOC which was formed at Utah State
University in 2007 by David Wiley (Pisutova, 2012), but it was not until 2008 that Dave Cormier of
the University of Prince Edward Island created the term MOOC. Cormier used the term to define
an open course created by George Siemens and Steven Downes offered to twenty five students
at the University of Manitoba that was also open for public enrolment (Mehaffy 2012).
TWO MAIN TYPES OF MOOCs
1. xMOOC or transmissive MOOC that guides the students like a teacher along a clearly-
defined path and connective MOOC in which learners themselves construct their
own course.
2. SOOCs which stand for Small Open Online Courses, are the one in which all students
wishing to take the course are obliged to take as form of selection or screening test
and it is used to determine the students’ level.
