As the foundational architects of satellite technology, we never stop pushing the
boundaries of innovation.
Our Story
We pioneered the satellite communications industry: We designed and launched the first commercial
communications satellite, Early Bird, in 1965 and ``live via satellite'' was born.
We were the first operator to introduce satellite services in Africa (since 1965), sparking the growth of
critical communications infrastructure.
For nearly 60 years, we have championed industry standards that have made it easier to connect networks
and people all over the world.
Today, we operate the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial network, which offers multi-
layered, redundant coverage and seamless, secure connectivity when and where you need it.
We serve 7 of the world’s top 10 MNOs – and we deliver TV and radio content to more than 2 billion
people worldwide.

Building a Better Future. Today.
Investing and building upon a strong foundation, embracing standards
and unifying the ecosystem
At Intelsat, we believe space-based networks will play a major role in the 5G ecosystem.
As a member of the GSMA and ATIS (Alliance for Telecommunications Industry
Solutions), we are leading the discussion about the important role of space-based
communications in 5G networks.
Our ultimate goal is to ensure an end-to-end ecosystem standard that meet the unified 5G
networks, which will be transformative, and develop as the industry evolves.
Our unparalleled unifying network will set the standard in 5G connectivity and
uninterrupted global broadband service with unrivaled coverage, economics and
performance.

As of the end of January 2021, the GSA recorded 144
commercial 5G networks present worldwide with more to
come.
In Africa, 5G networks have been officially deployed in
Lesotho, Madagascar, South Africa, Togo, Libya and Kenya -
and are being tested in a number of other countries.
The GSA has identified 18 African countries that are either
testing, rolling out or planning 5G. These countries include
Nigeria, Gabon, Senegal, Mozambique, Tanzania, Ethiopia,
Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo…

Space-based networks are vital to today’s global communications
infrastructure, providing services including mobile backhaul,
broadband, linear and non-linear TV and IoT.
In the 5G era, the advantages of satellites are even more profound
– namely, ubiquity, resiliency and mobility as well as
broadcasting.
Satellites gives the opportunity to offer vastly enhanced and faster
broadband connectivity with additional backhaul, creating
redundancies, and providing remote and rural areas with greater
connectivity.
Space-based networks transmit multimedia content via broadcast
and multicast streams, which are important capabilities for
enabling the 5G use cases.

Three Key Pillars of the Unified Network
Enabled by end-to-end orchestration and use of universal standards
Software-Defined Satellites
Dynamic and predictive design
concentrates and allocates bandwidth
on-the-fly when and where it’s needed
most. Eliminates network bottlenecks.
Smart Edge Terminals
A host of new end-user terminals,
including flat panel antennas and
software-defined modems, enable 5G,
edge compute elements, and improve
access to customers in all verticals.
5G
Scale and access to a broader
ecosystem: 5G tools and chipsets and
3GPP waveform. A frictionless customer
interface enables roaming and peering
with partner 5G networks.
