•   The practice of designing interactive digital
    products, environments, systems, and services
•   Focuses on understanding the goals and needs of
    users and trying to design tools for users to
    achieve those goals
•   Taking into account a user's environment and
    technological limitations
•   Defining the structure and behavior of interactive
    systems

Personas

• A description of a user archetype that can
  serve as a guide to the design process
• Composed from a series of field activities
  such as interviews and observations
• The descriptions are summarized in 1-2
  pages
Use of Personas in
         Design

• Designers use personas when it is not
  possible or practical to turn to users
• Personas cannot substitute involving real
  users in the design process
Writing Scenarios
Scenarios
•   A narrative describing foreseeable
    interactions of types of users (characters) and
    the system
•   Include information about goals, expectations,
    motivations, actions and reactions
•   Attempts to reflect on or portray the way in
    which a system is used in the context of daily
    activity
Example
It’s Friday afternoon and Joe is flying to Sydney. He
doesn’t have enough money for a taxi to the airport
and he’s running late.
He goes to a local ATM and identifies himself.
He specifies that he wants $100 from his savings
account. He’d like the money in $20 notes so that
he can give the taxi driver the correct change.
He doesn’t want a printed receipt, as he doesn’t
bother keeping track of transactions in his account.
Writing User Stories
User Stories
• Descriptions of a sequence of actions and
  events that lead to an outcome
• Each user story is limited, and should fit on
  a small paper note/card to ensure that it
  does not grow too large
• A quick way of handling customer
  requirements
Examples

• "As a <role>, I want <goal/desire> so that
  <benefit>"
• As a user, I want to search for my
  customers by their first and last names so
  that I can find customers faster.

  • 11. Use of Personas in Design • Designers use personas when it is not possible or practical to turn to users • Personas cannot substitute involving real users in the design process

Scenarios • A narrative describing foreseeable interactions of types of users (characters) and the system • Include information about goals, expectations, motivations, actions and reactions • Attempts to reflect on or portray the way in which a system is used in the context of daily activity
  • 15. Example It’s Friday afternoon and Joe is flying to Sydney. He doesn’t have enough money for a taxi to the airport and he’s running late. He goes to a local ATM and identifies himself. He specifies that he wants $100 from his savings account. He’d like the money in $20 notes so that he can give the taxi driver the correct change. He doesn’t want a printed receipt, as he doesn’t bother keeping track of transactions in his account.
  • 17. User Stories • Descriptions of a sequence of actions and events that lead to an outcome • Each user story is limited, and should fit on a small paper note/card to ensure that it does not grow too large • A quick way of handling customer requirements
  • 18. Examples • "As a <role>, I want <goal/desire> so that <benefit>" • As a user, I want to search for my customers by their first and last names so that I can find customers faster.
