Input Devices
The data and instruction given to the computer is
known as input. A hardware component used to enter
data and instructions into computer is called input
device.

Keyboard
• Keyboard is the most commonly used input
device. Data is mostly entered using a keyboard.
The buttons on the keyboard are called keys.
• A stander keyboard contains over 100 keys
• The arrangement of keys on a keyboard is called
keyboard layout.
• Numeric keys: letters n Numbers
• Punctuation keys: comma, period, semicolon
and so on….
• Function Key : F1 to F12 perform different
function. 3/9/2020Gulab Devi Educational Complex Lahore

Keyboard
• The function keys F1 to F12 are located
at the top of the keyboard . The function
keys are used to perform special
functions. For example F1 key is used to
get help in windows.

Keyboard
 A numeric key
A numeric key is located at
the right hand side of
keyboard .
it has arithmetic operators key
+,-,*,/ that are used in
arithmetic operation and digits
form 0 to 9.

Input Devices
Mouse

11
Input Devices
 Mouse is a popular pointing
device. It is used to input
instructions with a pointer on the
screen. Mouse is moved on a
flat surface to control the
movement of the cursor or
pointer on the screen. A mouse
usually have two or three button
. these buttons are used to
perform different task such as
selecting an object or opening a 3/9/2020Gulab Devi Educational Complex Lahore
12
Touchpad
 A touchpad is a small, flat, rectangular pointing
device that is sensitive to pressure and motion . To
move the pointer using a touchpad, slide your
fingertip across the surface of the pad. Some
touchpads have one or more buttons around the
edge of the pad that work like mouse buttons.
Trackball
 A trackball is a stationary pointing device with a ball
on its top or side . To move the pointer using a
trackball, you rotate the ball with your thumb, fingers,
or the palm of your hand. In addition to the ball, a
trackball usually has one or more buttons that work
just like mouse buttons.
Input Devices
Scanner

15
Scanner
 Scanner reads data or
information form a
source. This source
could be a written
documents , a price tag,
a graphic image or a
photograph.
 A Scanning device reads
the data or information
from hardcopy and then
converts it into soft copy. 3/9/2020Gulab Devi Educational Complex Lahore
16
Input Devices
Flatbed scanners is the most
commonly used scanner. It is also
called image scanner. It input one
page at a time. It works like a
photocopy machine. The image to
be scanned is placed on a glass
surface and the scanner records
the images .it is generally used at
home and office to scan photos,
book pages and other documents3/9/2020Gulab Devi Educational Complex Lahore
17
Scanner
Sheetfed Scanner
• Sheetfed scanners work
similarly to a flatbed scanner
but document are inserted
on the top of the scanner
like a fax machine. This
design reduce the scanner
cost and the amount of
required space. It also
enables automatic sheet
feeding. 3/9/2020Gulab Devi Educational Complex Lahore
18
Input Devices
 Handheld scanners
Handheld scanners is a portable
scanner. It typically can scan only
2 to 5 inches at a time . Handheld
scanners are useful to input small
amount of data. The scanner
must be moved over the image to
be scanned by hand.
Handheld scanner convert hard
copy into soft copy.

20
Digital Camera
 A digital camera that takes pictures and
stores them as digital images. Digital
cameras store captured images on storage in
the camera or some type of memory card.
photos taken with a digital camera are
typically transferred to computer using a
wired or wireless connection. Many digital
cameras allow the user to edit the images.

 A webcam is a hardware
camera and input device
that connects to a
computer and captures
either still pictures or

Output Devices
 An output device is any hardware component
that convey information to one or more people.
The widely used output devices are
 Monitor
 Printer
 Projector
 Speakers

27
Monitor
 A monitor is an electronic visual
computer display that includes a
screen, circuitry and the case in which
that circuitry is enclosed.
 Older computer monitors made use of
Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT), which
made them large, heavy and
inefficient.
 Nowadays, flat-screen Liquid Crystal
Display (LCD) monitors are used in
devices like laptops, PDAs and3/9/2020Gulab Devi Educational Complex Lahore

A printer is an output device that
prints characters, symbols and
graphics on paper. The printed
output is called hard copy.
There are Two Types of Printer
 Impact Printer
 Non Impact Printer

Types of printer
Impact printer Non Impact Printer
 It print character or images by
striking print hammer against an
inked ribbon
 It prints characters and images
without striking the papers
 It speed is slower  It speed is faster
 Its printing quality is lower  It printing Quality is Higher
 It normally uses continuous
paper sheet
 It normally uses individual paper
sheet
 It generate noise during printing  It Does not generate noise
during printing
 It use ink Ribbon for printing  It use toner for printing
 It is less expensive  It is more expensive
 Dot Matrix is an impact printer  Laser Printer is a non-impact
printer

 photo printer is a color
printer that produces photo-
lab-quality pictures . Some
photo printers print just one or
two sizes of photos,

The dot-matrix printer uses print
heads containing from 9 to 24
pins. These pins produce
patterns of dots on the paper to
form the individual characters.
The 24 pin dot-matrix printer
produces more dots that a 9 pin
dot-matrix printer.

• Inkjet printers are most common
type of consumer printers.
• The inkjet technology works by
spraying very tiny drops of liquid
ink on of paper.
Ink-jet printers

34
A laser printer works like a
photocopy machine. Laser
printers produce images on
paper by directing a laser
beam at a mirror which
bounces the beam onto a
drum.
The drum has a special
coating on it to which toner
(an ink powder) sticks.

Plotters and Large-Format
Printers Plotters
 are sophisticated printers used to produce high-
quality drawings such as blueprints, maps, and
circuit diagrams. These printers are used in
specialized fields such as engineering and drafting
and usually are very costly. Using ink-jet printer
technology, but on a much larger scale, a large-
format printer creates photo-realistic-quality color
prints.

Speaker
A computer speaker is a hardware device that
connects to a computer to generate sound. The
signal used to produce the sound that comes
from a computer speaker is created by the
computer's sound card.

A projector is an output device
that project the output of
computer screen on to a larger
screen. The output projected by
projector can be viewed by a
number of people very clearly ,
projector are used in classes to
deliver lectures.

LCD stand for “Liquid Crystal
Display” projectors use the same
techniques it is attached to the
computer directly.it uses its own
light source to display the
information shown on the computer
screen.
LCD Projectors

DLP (stand for "Digital Light
Projection") projectors are
coveted for their amazing
image quality. They are
much more expensive than
LCD projectors.

Softcopy & Hardcopy
 Softcopy is data that is shown on a display
screen or is in audio or voice form; it exists
only electronically. This kind of output is not
tangible; it cannot be touched. Soft is also used to
describe things that are easily changed or
impermanent.
 Hardcopy is printed output. The principal
examples are printouts, whether text or graphics,
from printers.
