Langston Hughes was a famous African American poet during the Harlem Renaissance in the early 20th century. 2. EARLY LIFE LANGSTON HUGHES WAS BORN IN 1902 He was one of the most famous literary figures during the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes openly chose to write poems about African American people. The themes in his poems express the joy, struggle, pain, and frustration of African American life.

I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young. I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep. I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it. I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset. I’ve known rivers: Ancient, dusky rivers. My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
