Who: Laurent Clerc
What: America's First Teacher of the Deaf
Where: He was born in France
When: He was born in France in 1785.
How did he become deaf? He fell near the
fireplace when he was 2 years old.
Why was he famous? He was a respected
teacher in the Paris School for the Deaf.

He moved to USA in 1816.

French Sign Language to USA

(Two maps are ok.) ...for your presentation: * Prepare 6 sentences in ASL. * Demonstrate accuracy in ASL grammar, **NOT** signed English! * Demonstrate accuracy in fingerspelling and numbers. * Present clearly. How do I know who to pick? Use your time NOW to google some of the names, then decide. * Can I do my project on the same person I did in some other teacher's class? Yes. * Must I do everything in the directions? Yes. Following directions is part of your grade. Follow the directions exactly if you want a high grade. * I don't like powerpoint. May I make a poster? No. Make an appointment to use powerpoint on my computer after school or during advisory. * How can I find out the sign or the word order? Use internet ASL dictionaries or borrow a textbook.
